Capitol Insurrection at Center of Conservative Movement

Capitol Insurrection At Center Of Conservative Movement: At Least 43 Governors, Senators And Members Of Congress Have Ties To Groups That Planned January 6th Rally And Riots. SUMMARY: On January 6, 2021, a rally in support of overturning the results of the 2020 presidential election “turned deadly” when thousands of people stormed the U.S. Capitol at Donald Trump’s urging. Even Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who rarely broke with Trump, has explicitly said, “the mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the President and other powerful people.” These “other powerful people” include a vast array of conservative officials and Trump allies who perpetuated false claims of fraud in the 2020 election after enjoying critical support from the groups that fueled the Capitol riot. In fact, at least 43 current Governors or elected federal office holders have direct ties to the groups that helped plan the January 6th rally, along with at least 15 members of Donald Trump’s former administration. The links that these Trump-allied officials have to these groups are: Turning Point Action, an arm of right-wing Turning Point USA, claimed to send “80+ buses full of patriots” to the rally that led to the Capitol riot, claiming the event would be one of the most “consequential” in U.S. history. • The group spent over $1.5 million supporting Trump and his Georgia senate allies who claimed the election was fraudulent and supported efforts to overturn it. • The organization hosted Trump at an event where he claimed Democrats were trying to “rig the election,” which he said would be “the most corrupt election in the history of our country.” • At a Turning Point USA event, Rep.

The Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2013

The Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2013 .H.R.687 – Introduced by Reps. Paul Gosar, Ann Kirkpatrick, Matt Salmon, David Schweikert, and Trent Franks .S.339 – Introduced by Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake Why do we need the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2013? • Creates thousands of high paying jobs. • Reduces U.S. dependence on foreign sources of energy and minerals. • Preserves Apache Leap. • Protects endangered species habitat, sensitive ecosystems, recreational sites, and historic landmarks in rural Arizona. • Generates billions of dollars of revenue for federal, state, and local governments. Overview of the Legislation • H.R.687 authorizes, directs, facilitates, and expedites the exchange of land between Resolution Copper, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management. – Legislation is required because the exchange involves three parties. • The exchange will bring into federal stewardship 5,344 acres of high-priority conservation lands in exchange for 2,422acres of national forest system land containing one of the largest undeveloped copper resources in the world. • H.R.687 and S.339 are nearly identical to the bill Rep. Gosar introduced and navigated to passage last Congress - the first time the exchange passed either body of Congress in its history. Resolution Copper will acquire the 2,422 acre “Oak Flat” parcel • This land is checker- boarded within Resolution Copper's lands. • Resolution Copper already has unpatented mining claims that cover about 75% of the parcel. • This conveyance is an important step to the development of the largest producing mine in North America. Economic Highlights • Over 3,000 construction jobs over a six to ten year period.

Potential Committee Vacancies in the 117Th Congress Last Updated November 25, 2020

Potential Committee Vacancies in the 117th Congress Last updated November 25, 2020 Congressional committees are a critical part of the legislative process. Committees serve as gatekeepers for legislation, considering and amending bills before they reach the floor. Hearings and investigations shape policy debates and provide critical oversight. At the beginning of each Congress, Members receive their committee assignments. Members pursue membership on committees that align with their interests and priorities, and their assignments are determined by the Democratic Caucus and the Republican Conference - with heavy influence from party leadership and steering committees.1 When determining committee assignments, the parties weigh member preferences along with seniority, regional balance, and balance among ideological and identity caucuses.2 Committee vacancies present opportunities for returning members to gain spots on new committees and for incoming freshmen to get their initial assignments. Vacancies for committee chairs and ranking members can have major policy implications because those leaders shape committees’ priorities. Committee vacancies may occur due to a preexisting vacancy or because a previous member retired, ran for another office, or lost reelection. On the Democratic side, Members can receive waivers that allow them to serve on additional committees beyond the caps in Democratic Caucus rules.3 While returning members usually have the option to remain on their previous committees (except for committees with term limits4), a returning Democratic committee member using a waiver is not guaranteed the option to keep the committee slot. The Democratic Caucus uses waivers to distribute remaining committee slots after all members, including incoming freshmen, have hit their caps. The actual number of vacancies going into the 117th Congress depends on the final partisan composition of the House, which is reflected in the committee ratios negotiated by Democratic and Republican leaders.

Background On October 4, 2017, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson gave an unscheduled press conference [herein “the Press Conference”] to address early morning press reports that he openly disparaged President Trump and had been on the verge of resigning this past summer amid clashes with the White House.1 The press conference was held despite an already scheduled press briefing led by Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert.2 During the press conference, Secretary Tillerson stated he did not speak with the President ahead of his unscheduled appearance. Secretary Tillerson also refused to refute reports that he “openly disparaged the president, referring to him as a ‘moron,’ after a July 20 meeting at the Pentagon with members of Trump’s national security team and Cabinet officials”:3 “REPORTER: Can you address the main headline of this story that you called the president a moron, and if not, where do you think these reports — “TILLERSON: I’m not going to deal with petty stuff like that. Grijalva The Honorable Paul Gosar United States Congress United States Congress The Honorable Andy Biggs The Honorable David Schweikert United States Congress United States Congress The Honorable Ruben Gallego The Honorable Debbie Lesko United States Congress United States Congress The Honorable Greg Stanton United States Congress Dear Members of the Arizona Congressional Delegation: As Mayors of cities and towns located along the potential Tucson-Phoenix-West Valley Amtrak route, we enthusiastically support Amtrak’s vision to bring passenger rail service to our communities. Frequent and reliable passenger rail service will expand economic opportunities and provide important regional connections between our cities and towns. We further support Amtrak’s reauthorization proposal to create a Corridor Development Program, which will help advance Amtrak’s planning, development and implementation of new corridor routes and improvements to existing routes. By funding this program through Amtrak’s National Network grant, Amtrak can make the initial capital investments necessary to get these new routes up and running. The grant will also cover the operating costs for the first several years, offering new services the ability to grow ridership and generate revenue. Amtrak has made clear its commitment to working in a collaborative manner with state and local partners to grow the national rail network, and we look forward to this partnership. In addition to Amtrak’s National Network grant, we also support increased funding for USDOT competitive grants, which can also support more passenger rail.

Major Vendors Connected To Insurrection Groups Must Sever Ties To Maintain Standards For Use Of Their Services Summary: Several vendors, including the domain registrar and host GoDaddy.com and the e-commerce platform Shopify, provide services to organizations closely involved with the January 6th Capitol Riot. These groups, and the associated companies, include: • Turning Point USA, whose website is registered by GoDaddy.com and whose online store is "powered" by Shopify. Turning Point USA helped organize the January 6th rallies that led to the riot, with the organization's leader even providing 80 buses to transport Trump supporters. • The Rule of Law Defense Fund, the fundraising arm of the Republican Attorneys General Association, whose website is hosted by Linode LLC and registered by GoDaddy.com, sent robocalls urging Trump supporters to march on the Capitol the day before the Capitol Riot occurred. • Women For America First, whose website is hosted by Google and registered by GoDaddy.com, urged a "caravan" of Trump supporters to attend the January 6th rally that led to the Capitol riot. In November 2020, Women For America First promoted the protests of white nationalist groups seeking to challenge the election results. • Tea Party Patriots, whose website is hosted by Fastly and Pantheon and registered by GoDaddy.com, was listed among the groups participating in the January 6th March to Save America Rally. • The Phyllis Schlafly Eagles, whose website is hosted by New Dream Network and registered by GoDaddy.com, was listed among the groups participating in the January 6th March to Save America Rally. • Brian Gibson, the pastor of HIS Church, whose website is hosted and registered by GoDaddy.com, took part in an event "billed as a combination worship service and rally for Trump" the day before the January 6th Capitol riot.
  • Trump Administration Allies Have Burrowed Into 24 Critical Civil Service Positions and 187 Last-Minute Appointments

Trump Administration Allies Have Burrowed Into 24 Critical Civil Service Positions and 187 Last-Minute Appointments

Trump Administration Allies Have Burrowed Into 24 Critical Civil Service Positions And 187 Last-Minute Appointments SUMMARY: Following the outgoing administration’s “quiet push to salt federal agencies with Trump loyalists,” an Accountable.US review has found that, as of February 22, 2021, at least 24 Trump administration political appointees have “burrowed” into long-term civil service jobs in the new Biden administration. This includes at least four figures in the national security apparatus, nine figures with environmental regulators, three figures in the Department of Justice, two figures in the embattled Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and at least six other appointees elsewhere who have refused to step down in the transition. Burrowing of this sort is not treated lightly, as officials who transfer from political appointments to career positions must undergo scrutiny by federal personnel overseers for a full five years—and some of these cases have been found to violate federal laws and have drawn congressional scrutiny. However, there is a much wider slate of concerning Trump administration appointments that are not subject to such strict oversight: During the Trump administration’s waning days following the 2020 election, it announced 187 last-minute appointments to various boards, commissions, and councils that don’t require Senate confirmation. While some of these appointments have already drawn alarm for going to campaign staffers, megadonors, and top administration allies, Accountable.US has unearthed even more troubling names in Trump’s outgoing deluge. Similar to how early Trump administration personnel picks were directly conflicted against the offices they served, many of these late Trump appointments are woefully underqualified or have histories directly at odds with the positions to which they were named—and they are likely to stay in long into the Biden administration.

To Melania — Prologue — Just Another Lunch “Grab ’em by the pussy.” The sentence that reverberated around the world on October 7, 2016. The quote was an excerpt from a recording that became forever known as “the Access Hollywood tape,” published by the Washington Post and aired on NBC News, a month before the 2016 presidential election. It had been recorded eleven years earlier, in September 2005, on a bus taking Donald Trump to make a cameo on the NBC soap opera Days of Our Lives. Now infamously, Donald told TV host Billy Bush, “I’m automatically attracted to beautiful. I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ’em by the pussy.” When the story broke about the tape I was deeply immersed in my oldest son, Zach’s, health problems related to his life-threatening food allergies and other issues that required many doctor’s visits and therapies. My middle son, Tyler, was transferring to a new school, and my daughter, Alexi, was adjusting to hers.

Is Donald Trump an Outlier Among Recent Presidents?

FEATURE Contemporary Presidency Presidents Meet Reporters: Is Donald Trump an Outlier among Recent Presidents? MARTHA JOYNT KUMAR Is President Donald Trump an outlier among presidents in the ways in which he meets with the press? Using comparative data for Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Trump, this article looks at how similar and different Trump is compared to his recent predecessors. While at one time presidents answered reporters’ queries in presidential press conferences, today presidents have more opportunities to meet the press. All six presidents studied used three basic forums: press conferences, informal question-and-answer sessions, and interviews. They did so in ways consistent with their presidential goals and in settings in which they felt comfortable. In their first 32 months, all recent presidents employed strategies similar to ones that brought each to the presidency and then most found additional resources for communicating with the public. Except for President Trump, Presidents Reagan through Obama did so with relatively stable White House leadership teams and coordinated communications organizational structures. In this way as well as in significant others, the five previous presidents had more in common with one another than they did with President Trump. Keywords: president and press, White House press operations, presidential press conferences President Donald Trump is often characterized as bent on destroying the political system as we know it without a relationship to past presidential patterns. Gerald Seib of the Wall Street Journal characterized Trump as “the disrupter-in-chief, the most promi- nent leader to rise to power by proudly taking a wrecking ball to the prevailing political system” (2019).
