A BOYS lready state champions in football, Wilcox County will try to grab a basketball Atitle to match. The Patriots’ hoops team looks very similar to its football squad, featuring the star quarterback and receiver as its key players. Junior Nick Marshall quarterbacks the Patriots from the shooting guard position, and has already thrown in 52 points in the first round and 29 in the second. The team’s second-leading scorer, Lonnie Outlaw, adds size at 6-foot-7. Aquinas, the No. 2 seed out of Region 4, will have to limit their offensive output if it wants to stop Wilcox at Columbus State. Also at CSU, Terrell County and Wilkinson County will do battle this Friday. Terrell won an emotional game against Greenville in the second round, coming back to win 76-75 on a buzzer-beater by Markez Dotson. Wilkinson County had an easier time with 2009 state runner-up Turner County, turning away the Rebels by a score of 85-51. Wilkinson has been absolutely dominant on its way to a perfect 29-0 record this season. Two Gwinnett private schools will square off at Marietta High School after hard-fought wins in the second round. Providence Christian shocked Southwest Atlanta Christian last Tuesday with a 37-36 win, getting a last- second lay-in to fall. Wesleyan snuck by Pace Academy 64-61, getting the close win after losing most of a 17-point lead in the second half. Andrew Frerking was huge for the Wolves, hitting a ridiculous 7-of-8 3-pointers on his way to 30 points. Defending champion Whitefield Academy will make the short trip to central Cobb County to take on Commerce, which won a squeaker over St. Francis, 52-48. A GIRLS wo Savannah rivals will square off when Calvary Day and Savannah Christian, Tboth of Region 3, meet on Friday. Calvary Day, the 2008 state champions, have beaten their sectionals opponent three times already on the year, with the last win, a 13-point margin, coming on Feb. 2. The winner of this game will earn the right to meet Region 3 champion Emanuel County Institute, which is coming off an impres- sive 58-28 blowout over Washington-Wilkes in the second round. ECI has simply been dominant this winter, compiling a perfect 11-0 record in the region and defeat- ing Calvary Day 70-45 in the finals. The Lady Bulldogs, however, should not take Taylor County lightly, as the Lady Vikings have a similarly impressive 28-1 overall record. Taylor routed Seminole County on Wednesday, 67-36. The Marietta section- al will feature two great matchups as well. Wesleyan has been as dominant as any team in the state over the last decade, and is going for a rare three-peat state title. Head coach Jan Azar’s team got balanced scoring in the 81-32 rout of Towns County, but gets a boost when senior Erin Hall, a deadeye 3-point shooter, is hitting from the outside. Blocking the Wolves’ way to a third straight crown will be St. Francis, which defeated Pace Academy 68-52 at home on Wednesday night. The fourth sectional game was played Thursday night between Southwest Atlanta Christian and Prince Avenue Christian due to weather, but results were not available at press time.

AA BOYS cIntosh County Academy punched its ticket to the quarterfinals round with a M64-54 win over Greene County, a semifinalist from a year ago. The squad from Region 2 will meet Laney for the right to compete at Macon this year, and Laney sophomore guard Jamie West will be looking to match his game-high contribution of 15 points against Northeast, Macon in the second round. Both Henry County and Thomasville advanced on Tuesday night and will get the full three days of rest; the Warhawks will be charged with stopping the potent 3-point shooting attack for Thomasville, which helped the Bulldogs jump out to a 32-9 lead in the first half of their second-round game against Benedictine. Sophomore guard Trey Gosier led all scorers with 24 points in Thomasville’s 70-44 win. Greater Atlanta Christian, one of the top favorites to win it all in Class AA, continued its torrid pace with an 82-39 win over Lamar County in the second round; the Spartans are led by the point guard play of Paul Dawson, the inside presence of Trent Wiedeman and the perimeter scoring and defense of Malcolm Brogdon to make a lethal 1-2-3 punch. If Spencer is to challenge Region 6 champ GAC, it will have to get big contributions from leading scorer Damion Brown (26 points per game). In the final matchup in AA, both Callaway and Jefferson meet in the sectionals after knocking off two of GAC’s region mates — Decatur and Westminster, respectively. Both teams are region champs, and Jefferson makes the Elite Eight after squeaking out a dramat- ic two-point victory over Westminster, 58-56. AA GIRLS t’s a Region 6 showdown at the Northwest Georgia Trade Center in Dalton as No. I4 seed Blessed Trinity will try to turn the tables on league champ Greater Atlanta Christian. GAC dominated the regular season and region tournament against the Lady Titans, winning all three games by at least 16 points. Guard Chaney Means is the senior leader for GAC, which comes into the matchup at 25-4 on the year. Vidalia rode a strong fourth quarter to an 86-58 win over Northeast, Macon, and got big-time contributions from Shanice Mincey (23 points) and Shekinah Henry (22 points). Mitchell County turned away Appling County in a much closer Round 2 contest, and will try and stop the Lady Indians with Tiona Burley and a strong supporting cast. Burley exploded for 21 points, 16 rebounds and two blocks in Mitchell’s win over Putnam County in the first round; the team dispatched Appling County by the score of 52-47 on Wednesday. Laney won one of the wildest second- round games, a 94-93 overtime win over Henry County. The Lady Wildcats will shake off fatigue to try and knock off a hot Thomasville team, which has defeated Central, Macon and Dodge County on its way to the quarters. Henry County has lost only twice in its classification this year, both times to Vidalia. Buford is back for another run at a title, and will play either Lovett or Rabun County, which played Thursday due to the weather (results were not available at press time).
