NAME: ______Bring this catalogue with you – catalogues will not be available at the Auction.

PADDLE NUMBER: ______TICKETS Pre-purchase: All tickets will still available on Sunday, April 12, at the auction table after service for $15/adult and $5 for children.

Although tickets will be available at the door, the auction committee asks that you purchase tickets in advance if possible for more accurate planning of food purchases and fewer delays with auction bookkeeping.

DISPLAY Several items from both the live and silent auction are on display in the Sanctuary. They are labeled according to catalogue number. Take a look at them on Sunday and plan your bidding.

GENERAL SCHEDULE 6:00 PM Doors open, auction paddle registration, food and drink, Children’s Auction, and the Silent Auction 7:00-7:30 PM Musical Interlude: Improvisational Piano by Thomas Royal 7:30 PM Live Auction, Auction first

Note: Most auction items are good only through March 1, 2016, unless other dates are specified by the donor. It is the responsibility of the winning bidders to arrange a time when so specified.

If you are unable to attend an event you have bid on and won you may gift your seat to another UUFG member, once you have notified the event’s host/hostess! Getting your Bidding Number When you arrive, you will be greeted at the door. Here you receive your numbered auction paddle that will allow you to place bids. You will be asked to sign in and provide contact information, and then you can proceed to the Sanctuary and visit our bartenders for some Sassafras Splash or other beverage. The Silent Auction (6:00–7:00 p.m.) When you enter the Sanctuary you are urged to peruse the tables holding the items offered in the Silent Auction. Most items are arranged in numerical order by category, except for the items that have been displayed in the Sanctuary prior to the auction. Once you find the items on which you wish to bid, locate the accompanying bid sheet, place your bid and identify yourself with your bidding number, which is located on your auction paddle. As you mingle and chat with other members, perhaps visiting the bar again, keep your eye on “your” items. If you’ve been outbid you may wish to surreptitiously bump your bid. Please remember that the highest bid (or in some cases bids) wins at the time the silent auction closes. So keep listening to the announcements and keep an eye on the items you really must have. The final bidding can be fast and furious and that’s all part of the fun! The Live Auction (starts 7:30 p.m.) The Live Auction will be a fun, fast, and furious way to bid for great items and raise lots of money for the Fellowship. Auctioneer Jeff Stevens will describe the item, and then the bidding begins! Hold up your number and holler out your bid. If it is a per person item, use your other hand to hold up the number of spaces you are wanting. The auctioneer’s helpers will keep track and encourage the bidding. Go ahead, bid again. You don’t want to miss out on a spot at our amazing food and fellowship offerings! Setting the Date Please read the information about the donated item carefully. Some events have a pre-set date and others need to be arranged. It is the responsibility of the winning bidders in many cases to arrange the date of the event. Per Seat Items Many items, including all dinner parties, will be auctioned on a per-seat basis. The Auctioneer will announce the item and ask all willing to pay the minimum bid to stand and indicate how many seats they wish to purchase by holding up that number of fingers. The Auctioneer will then raise the price in appropriate increments; bidders not willing to pay the higher price will sit down. Bidding will stop when the number of fingers raised equals the number of seats available. Keeping Track How do you keep track of what you bid on? There is a handy listing space on the first page where you can make notes. So put your name on the front of the catalog and make sure to hold on to it; it will be the repository of all your Auction information. For parties, check with the hosts for directions and other pertinent info. Checking Out When the gavel comes down on the last item, checkout begins for the Auction Accounting Staff. Every item purchased has been logged on the high bidder’s account during the auction. You will check out at the table where you checked in. The Accounting Staff will present each bidder with a sheet detailing the items purchased and the amount bid with a total. Accounts can be paid in cash or by check made out to UUFG (UU Fellowship of Gainesville). This year if you are set up to pay your pledge on line you may pay that way for your auction items too. We may be able to accept credit cards but watch for updates about that. Once you’ve paid, you are free to take your treasures home. Kids’ “Silent” Auction!!

Children's auction starts at 6:00 in Classrooms Three and Four Pizza dinner following in the playground (weather permitting) or Common Room Movie Time in the Common Room

Auction Parents may accompany children to help with bidding or set their little ones free with piggy bank in hand! The close of the children's auction will be announced in the Sanctuary so parents can peruse what the little ones have bid on ... because if your child can't pay up well … then it will be added to your tab, yikes! Alternatively the items may be so neat that parents will be tempted to add to the bid of the kid!

Tax Issues Disclaimer (Information courtesy of Horizon UU Church of Carrolton, TX) This is not tax advice, but just our understanding as to how the tax laws work, and what steps we are taking to help you complete your tax return for next year. The following are just basic points of common sense-type guidance. If $10 is given to the Fellowship in exchange for something worth $10, only one person, the donor, can deduct that $10. The records you keep from tonight are the best records you will get. Any money you spend at the “UUFG Service Auction” may not show up on your statement of donations to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Gainesville for the tax year 2015. Keep your booklet, your copy of items purchased and your canceled check/receipt for next year’s tax time. You cannot deduct, as a charitable contribution, any money you give to the Fellowship IF you receive something of equal value FMV (“Fair Market Value”) or greater in return. For example: You purchase the Beer Tasting Extravaganza for $20/ person. Since you will eat and drink a full $20/person (if not more) worth of fun and beer, you cannot deduct anything for the $20/person you gave to UUFG, since you will have received (more than) your money’s worth. However, if you pay more than FMV, you may deduct anything you give over the FMV. For example, Middle Eastern Dinner is listed as having a $50/person FMV. Due to intense bidding, you pay $100/person (note: the bidding could be intense!) It is our understanding that you can deduct the $50/ person over the FMV. You may deduct what you spend hosting a party, up to the FMV. For example: You host a party with a FMV of $10/person. 10 people bid and pay $10 each to come to your party. You spend $100 on food and drink. If you keep your receipts, it is our understanding of the tax laws that you may deduct the $100 you spent. In Short: Put your name on your Auction Guide, keep it and your receipts. It is a good idea to consult a tax specialist if you plan on deducting any portion of your donation, either for the item itself or the amount you spend hosting a party.
