I HAVE A FEELING that we’re in for a lot of them. For as the banner year of 2020 approaches, the temptation to tell bad puns may be overwhelming to some folks. Already, for instance, I’ve heard of a man who went to numerous doctors to treat his chronic vision problems. None of them were able to help him until one fellow told him to simply take a few small red and white ketchup “embody hope” to all those around us, packets and squirt them into his eyes. CHRIST CHURCH LEADERSHIP GUIDE // STORIES 7 You have probably heard the expression, “One is nearer to God in a Garden than any place else on Earth”. I suspect that is not strictly true, but I understand the sentiment. A garden is usually quieter than other places and lends itself to contemplation. Working with living things in the soil also seems to bring one closer to the fundamentals of life. The more complicated things of modern life remain important but seem less daunting. We have in the a garden here at Christ Church. Ours is a vegetable garden and its primary purpose is to provide fresh vegetables for the food pantry at the East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry but it is also a great place to be. It provides a place to break away from blessings the stresses of everyday life and an opportunity to think about what is truly important. Our garden, however, offers even more.

CHRIST CHURCH LEADERSHIP GUIDE // STORIES 11 “Some of my favorite things about Christmas are the pine trees and lights. Jesus said He was the Light, so we decorate to honor him. We set up a Christmas tree made of pine. We put family gifts under the tree, because we are all part of God’s family and Jesus gave us the greatest gift, with his sacrifice he gave us eternal life.” - Carmen Maldonando, Mexico

“Christmas here is a moment of sharing and love. It’s a time where people always share whatever they have with their neighbors and friends. It’s a moment we use to visit our friends we don’t see often. Haitians also take this time to paint and clean their house. Some people buy Christmas tree lights to decorate their home. Christians take this time to go the church in the afternoon to worship and pray. When I was younger, I would set off fireworks. That was my favorite tradition growing up.”

- Rodny Chanteur, Haiti

We asked a few of our international mission friends what Christmas looks like in their respective areas.

“On Christmas Eve, we make sure to collect vast amounts of food and get it ready for early morning preparation. We’ll wash and iron the whole family’s clothes, and tidy up the house and compound. We also slaughter animals to eat the following day. On Christmas day, we start off the day early in the morning playing Christmas Carols. We then march to church in our best clothes. Our Christmas feast often is with our neighbors, friends and relatives. We’ll spend the afternoon visiting other friends, or take a family drive to an interesting place. Then we watch a football match between rival village teams. We end the day partying. After Christmas, we distribute our extra food to friends and neighbors. I will also meet up with the Reverend and other local clergy.”
