Most of us are breathing a sigh of relief that our cold and snowy 4 Alumni Profile winter is finally over. Spring brought us the Prom, Senior Awards Banquet, Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement for the newest class of Malden Catholic alumni, the Class of 5 “God, Family, Country” 2011. The same May weekend, we welcomed the Golden Reunion Class of 1961 back home to Malden Catholic. The cycle of blue and gold life continues! 6 Student Profile Things have been busy since the last edition of Crystal Hi-Lites. The week of Janu- 7 GCHS ary 30-February 5, we joined the 7,000 Catholic schools nationwide to highlight the major positive impact that Catholic schools have on our nation by celebrating “Catholic 8 On Crystal Street Schools Week.” The theme for this year is “A+ for America – Catholic Schools.” No 10 Celebration for MCHS surprise for us. Throughout these months our seniors were preparing to bring their MC educational 12 Alumni News experiences, inside and outside the classrooms, into the wider world. 98% of them will 15 Faculy/Staff Profile enroll in universities and colleges and 2% will join the military or the workforce. Back Upcoming Events In January, MC junior Timothy DeMaria was named an honoree of the Chinese Cultural Connection as the Best Youth Volunteer Role model. Later in the winter, senior Rudy Fa- vard was featured in the Boston Globe, on local TV and on ABC World News for his work with a local family and their disabled son. On March 31, Rudy was the student speaker at the 21st Annual Inner-City Scholarship Dinner held at the Boston Marriott Copley Place by the Catholic Schools Foundation. During the last week of February, seven MC students represented Malden Catholic at the annual Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools junior retreat in West Hartford, Connecticut. This retreat brings upperclassmen from all thirteen Xaverian Brothers’ schools together for a week of prayer, service and fraternity. In February, alumni gathered in the Brother Gilbert Center to celebrate the Lancers’ hockey victory over Boston College High School. A larger and even more enthusiastic group of students, alumni, faculty and friends of Malden Catholic followed the Super Eight Hockey Tournament games. When junior Brendan Collier from Charlestown made the winning goal in overtime play against St. John’s Prep on March 20, the 4-3 final score made all of us so proud to acknowledge that “We are M.C.!” Hockey co-captains celebrate the Super8 Championship On April 2, we enjoyed gathering for the Celebration for Malden Catholic. This signature event allows us to renew and revitalize our relationships as members of the Malden Catholic Family. This year’s dinner allowed us to present Lifetime Achievement Awards to three members of the Higgins Family of Melrose: John ’57, Richard ’59 and Robert ’64. More than $350,000 was raised. On June 15, we were able to enjoy annual Golden Plus Reunion, for graduates of MC and Girls Catholic in the years before 1961. It is always a pleasure to reconnect with one another, share some stories about Highland Avenue and Charles Street, and have a luncheon in a setting somewhat fancier than the original places where we enjoyed the brown bag lunches our parents prepared ”back then.” The spirit of the conversations seems to be the same as it always has been! Members of the robotics team As always, graduation time has been an opportunity for us to reflect on our identity and to consider how we have been measuring up to the nearly eighty year tradition of Xave- rian Brothers’ secondary education for young men. Over the years, the Brothers and our dedicated lay faculty and staff members provide our students with unique examples of how one may “fall in love with the service of God,” as Xaverian Founder Theodore James Ryken did. Besides classroom and lab activities, liturgies and prayer services and service opportunities all promote the “A+ for America – Catholic Schools.”

Have a refreshing and enjoyable summer, everyone! New Eucharistic Ministers were commissioned in April

Nathan Witkowski ’09, former MC baseball All-Scholas- tic, made his Bentley University debut on the mound against Rollins College in Winter Park, FL in February.

Richard Serino ’10 was one of only six legislative interns at the Mass. State House last August to receive the Arthur Lambert Memorial Scholarship (given in mem- ory of Lambert, the chief of staff to former MA Senate President Tom Birmingham). Scholarship recipients are selected based on an essay and an interview with mem- bers of the Lambert Family. Now at St. Anselm College, Ricky was one of four freshmen elected to the Student Senate, representing the class of 2014.
