The Many Faces of Homelessness

As Disciples of Christ, we have a responsibility to respect the dignity of all people, to work to secure everyone’s rights and to work for a more just and peaceful society and world. We undertake this mission through prayer, worship, education, and action, for love of our neighbor is our love of our Lord.

We take our mission statement very seriously at New Roads Catholic Community’s social justice ministry. With lots of prayer and reflection, our focus turns to members’ passions –what individuals really care about. Those passions spill over onto others, and because of that, sub-committees on topics that are deeply meaningful are addressed.

Such was the beginning of the forum on homelessness. With support and encouragement from Frank Austin, Jane Blumberg, and Miriam Stein from the Advocacy Network to End Family Homelessness, five members of the ministry moved with the Spirit, began last August to meet and to reach out to organizations, both religious and secular, that they felt would be more than interested in homelessness.

Months of meetings and much dedication and action from all involved produced the results of the goal: to raise awareness and educate members of our communities on the impact of homelessness. It was through the voices of our panelists, direct service providers, housing and homeless student advocates, and those who were formerly homeless that the important questions were answered: What is homelessness? Who is homeless or at risk? What does it really look like? What can we all do to put an end to it?

We are all grateful to the legislators who so willingly appeared to address the issue of homelessness. Their responses to questions were particularly thoughtful and honest. We are also grateful to our many exhibitors from service agencies and advocacy organizations that so generously gave their time to provide important information at the Forum. All of this happened only because a spirit of collaboration existed in and among so many–joining groups/individuals together that might not have otherwise been joined to work for a common cause.

If the forum is to be judged a true success, it will be because others have heard the message and the stories and have responded with action “for love of our neighbor.”
