Amid the cascading tidal waves of electronic rumbles, hisses and moans that comprise the climax of “And the Sky Began to Scream,” Trent Reznor hisses, “I will tear it down to the ground and build another one.” And so he has with How to Destroy Angels, the mastermind’s recently formed group with his wife Mariqueen Reznor and frequent collaborator . The band (if that term even applies here) debuted in 2010 with a self-titled EP, which sounded like a watered-down and less interesting version of Trent Reznor’s former outfit. Trent Reznor admitted he still needed to work at carving out a unique style for the new electronica act. Now, with “Welcome Oblivion,” he has reworked his musical habits to establish HTDA as something more than a side project, and the results speak for themselves. From the album’s opening chords in “The Wake-Up,” the band exhibits a new and explosive confidence. Almost completely absent are the electric guitars of Nine Inch Nails; they’ve been replaced with spasmodic synthesizers atop bellowing bass and ultra-distorted vocals. If NIN was made up of Trent Reznor amalgamating the sounds of bands like Skinny Puppy, Ministry and David Bowie, then HTDA is the odd love child of Aphex Twin , Cabaret Courtesy of How to Destroy Angels Voltaire and Massive Attack . How to Destroy Angels swaps out guitar-driven tracks for synthesized, digital sounds on “Welcome Oblivion.” However, that sort of comparison doesn’t atmospheric tracks, with analog noise playing Reznor has worked on.
