Page 01 Aug 16.Indd ISO 9001:2008 CERTIFIED NEWSPAPER ON SATURDAY PET PREFERENCE UN and EU move against Islamic State UNITED NATIONS/BRUSSELS: The United Nations Security Council yesterday adopted a resolution aimed at weakening Islamists in Iraq and Syria by cutting off funding and the flow of foreign fighters and blacklisting six people, including the Islamic State spokesman. And at an emergency meet- ing in Brussels, the European Union backed the arming of Kurdish rivals. The EU also offered to take charge of Gaza’s border crossings and work to prevent illegal arms flows, insisting on a durable truce and saying a return to the status quo before the latest war “is not an option”. The EU foreign ministers said the bloc is also prepared to pre- vent arms smuggling and launch a training pro- gramme for Palestinian Authority police and customs officers to be deployed in Gaza. Tribal leaders and clerics from Iraq’s Sunni Muslim heartland who rebelled against outgo- ing premier Nouri Al-Maliki-led government are willing to join the new administration if certain conditions are met, a spokesman said. IS militants “massacred” some 80 members of Iraq’s Yazidi minority and kidnapped women in a village in the country’s north, officials said. • The Cultural Formation of Mass Incarceration
The Biography of an Institution: The Cultural Formation of Mass Incarceration Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Nicole Barnaby, B. A. Graduate Program in African American and African Studies The Ohio State University 2016 Thesis Committee: Devin Fergus, Advisor Denise Noble Lynn Itagaki Copyright by Nicole Barnaby 2016 Abstract It may be hard for some to justify how the United States imprisons over two million people when it is hailed ‘the land of the free,’ but this thesis argues that there are very real social, economic and political drivers behind this growing trend having nothing to do with crime. While mass incarceration has its roots in other older forms of racialized social control, it exists in its current form due to an array of cultural conditions which foster its existence. Utilizing the cultural studies tool known as the circuit of culture, this thesis aims to provide a holistic understanding of the articulation of social factors contributing to the existence of mass incarceration. In order to do this, mass incarceration is assessed with the use of the 5 processes of the circuit of culture (production, regulation, representation, consumption and identity) and a specific look at its relation to the Black community over time is considered. ii Vita 2012…………………………B. However, there has been no official comment on the rumours about the resignation, which if true would mean scrapping the grilling filed two weeks ago by three MPs over alleged violations, especially the payment of the $2.2 billion penalty to US’ Dow Chemical. Hussein submitted his resignation to the prime minister along with all Cabinet members two weeks ago after MPs surprised everyone by filing two requests to grill the ministers. In the meantime, Hussein carried out one of the biggest reshuffle in the oil sector, replacing the chief exec- utive officers of all the eight companies under Kuwait Petroleum Corp. The shakeup also included replacing the chief execu- tive officer of KPC Farouq Al-Zanki, who was replaced by Nezar Al- Adasani. A number of MPs swiftly welcomed the reported resignation but no one confirmed the report. MP Abdullah Al- Tameemi said the accept- Hani Hussein ance of the resignation of the oil minister was “long over- due” but called for following the issue on the payment of Dow penalty in court.

Banged Up Abroad 1 Research and Notes The information and specifically the tables within this document are a key part of my research into my Banged up Aboard project in which I am seeking to capture as a series of documentary and indexed images the site of the former World War Two (WWII) Prisoner of War (PoW) sites in England, Scotland and Wales1. In complying this data it has become evident that the Camp numbers for whatever reason have been duplicated and a camp may have had more than one number as such it is acknowledged that discrepancies exist within not just my table but also with the source information. This may have in some cases camps being moved from one location to another, a camp being divided and given two number such as one for German one for Italian, or one number for Officers and a different number for other ranks. Also many “Subcamps exist for which I have in the most part been unable to obtain the Camp, in cases like this they have been given a nominal number of 00. The intent is to capture the sites as they are now although as part of the research, I will also be accumulating images and data as to the sites when they were in use during and slightly after the end of WWII. It is intended that the images captured as part of this project will form a historic data source for other to come.
