This program has been going strong for almost nine years, and in that time we have awarded more than $200,000 to some 230 teachers throughout the country and around the world. The Teaching for Diversity program and the Rachel Greene Memorial Fund are two powerful initiatives that I am incredibly proud to have helped shepherd during my years with KYTA. We will again be awarding grants early in 2010; watch for announcements of application dead- lines in upcoming editions of the KYTA E-news and Updates and the Yoga Bulletin. It feels especially appropriate at this time of year to bring awareness to the ways in which we can give of our time, energy, and resources. I hope the following stories inspire you to apply for a grant to bring yoga to an underserved population in your community, or to donate to the Teaching for Diversity program, so we can continue to expand the depth and breadth of yoga’s reach and bring greater thriving and joy to our world. I created the program with Beth Gibbs, Director at Camp Courant, and my responsibilities include organizing the program, supervising and assisting our two yoga teachers, and teaching a group of five- and six-year-olds. Five- to 8-year-olds take introductory classes, while 11- and 12-year-olds join the Yoga Rocks Club, which meets daily for one hour throughout the three weeks. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience to see the children’s interest in yoga blossom. At first they didn’t know what yoga was and were resistant—they would jokingly call it “yogurt.” Now they get off the bus on the first day of camp and ask, “When does the yoga program start?” This program has been one of my most labor-intensive efforts, and to see the children valuing and lov- ing yoga is a wonderful blessing. It’s rewarding when they tell me how they use yoga to calm down when they are upset and to relax when they are stressed. It’s rewarding to see yoga providing these children with a healthy skill set for dealing with life’s challenges. It’s rewarding to observe children like Raven Mitchell, age 10, who has participated in the program for the last three years and now assists in classes for the younger children. It is my hope to one day see Raven get a scholarship from Kripalu to become a yoga teacher. As well as receiving a grant from Teaching for Diversity, I have also donated back to the program. How could I not when I have seen first-hand what the yoga program at Camp Courant has done for the children? I hope to see yoga programs for children in need starting up around the na- tion and worldwide, and donating to TFD is the way to make this happen. —Laura Magnussen, Windsor, Connecticut, KYTA member since 2002 Relaxing into the unknown: Teaching yoga to cancer patients My Teaching for Diversity grant supported a series of sessions offering relaxation exercises and meditation techniques to cancer patients at Boston Medical Center. Most of these new yogis were women who had been recently diagnosed with breast cancer and those who had been living with breast cancer, though some patients with ovarian cancer also joined the group. The sessions were offered in a chair rather than on the floor, and though yoga was new to almost everyone, they were all able to do the breathing exercises, body-based meditative visualizations, and yoga postures. The more I slowed down the movements, the more they enjoyed them. What the students told me most frequently was that after classes, they felt calmer and less anxious about everything in their lives. They became more comfortable relaxing as they gradually befriended their bodies, which they felt had turned against them. One woman who did not speak English came regularly with her daughter, who told me that her mother enjoyed the classes so much that it didn’t matter that they weren’t in Arabic. I am struck by how regular people become living testimonies of courage as they move through extraordinarily difficult experiences. I was again and again inspired by their dignity as they faced not knowing whether they would get better or not. Teaching yoga to students who were aware of the preciousness of time was a huge gift for me. It increased my appreciation for the magic sacredness in every moment, which in turn in- creased my comfort in supporting people in handling challenges associated with illness. —Anna Dunwell, Newton Center, Massachusetts, KYTA member since 2003 continued on next page go to page 1 go to page 2 go to page 5 go to page 7 go to page 8 go to page 10 go to page 11 go to page 12 Namaste TFD Stories Studio Space KYTA Forum State of Training Substitute Teaching True Teacher Reviews YOGA BULLETIN winter 2009 volume 18 issue 4 3 Completing the circle: Teaching, giving, and receiving In 2006, I received a Teaching for Diversity grant to bring yoga to women living in a shelter after escaping domestic violence, as well as women recovering from substance abuse who had lost custody of their children. It was amazing to see how the yoga affected them as they pulled themselves out of these situations. They especially loved the Warrior pose, because of its feeling of strength and power. Last year I received a Rachel Greene Memorial Fund scholarship to attend Yoga EdTM training at Kripalu. Using the elements and inspiration I gained from that training, as well as my background as a visual artist and educator, I have since cre- ated a self-empowerment and community-building program for at-risk adolescent girls that combines yoga, art, health awareness, and leadership activities. I also joined the teaching team for a yoga program, run by Kripalu’s Institute for Extraor- dinary Living, at a public high school in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. This is my second year co-teaching yoga as part of their physical education classes for the year. It is quite an exhilarating feeling to enter a high school classroom, transformed into a yoga space, and to have the privilege of watching an equally remarkable transformation take place in their young lives. KYTA has given me tools through its grants to go out in the world to do work that is important and also supports the growth of my practice. For that reason, I was eager to give The Teaching for Diversity Program back when I had the opportunity. Namaste Will Never Get a Nasdaq Listing; target $.25 cents ( Updated 9:25am) **** Update**** New information has come to Citron’s attention and its important. New target price $0.25. The French Presse has spoken and a credit to them. Quoting the head of Quebec Cannabis, Linda Bouchard has spoken. The takeaway is “A situation ‘totally unacceptable’”. It goes on to say, Quebec is to investigate Namaste and the article quotes “in violation of several sections of the Quebec and Canadian laws that formally prohibit the promotion of recreational cannabis products.” The College of Nurses of Quebec even imply that NamasteMD might be illegal (source). Tilray has now dropped Namaste too – let the hangover begin (source). Just when you thought you’d seen it all. Two nights ago, in Montreal, Namaste culminated its three‐month long pledge challenge with a party featuring Snoop Dogg. This is a $1 billion company that does not grow cannabis, rather they sell vape pens and have a website that did a paltry $46k in revenue last quarter as they lost $9 million. This is the type of euphoria, hype and promotion that the SEC has been warning investors about. The last few weeks have been strong for Cannabis stocks that trade in the US and investors have gone feverishly wild in creating bubble like valuations. While you can’t blame real companies like Aphria and Canntrust on hoping to join the party through a NASDAQ listing, you have to expect some party crashers to show up.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Major Solar Array Launched at Four Seasons Family of Companies Ephrata, PA – On Friday, August 31st, the Four Seasons Family of Companies activat- ed a 1.3 MW (megawatt) solar array instal- lation on their main refrigerated distribution center at Wabash Road, producing power equivalent to 182 homes’ electricity use for one year. This project marks another mile- stone in Four Seasons’ commitment to reduc- ing their energy and overall resources use as part of their sustainability strategy. The 3,900 solar panels will provide half the energy used by their entire offices and re- frigerated warehouse on a sunny day. Given that solar panels produce peak electricity for about six hours a day, this will provide approximately 1/6 of the building’s total demand for electricity in a year. The completed project is expected to pay for itself in approximately 5 years. Not only is this solar array the largest collection of solar panels on a refrigerated facility in Lancaster County, PA, but the building is cooled with recycled water, keeping efficiency high. The energy created with this solar array will reduce greenhouse gas emissions annually equivalent to: Greenhouse gas emissions from: CO2 emissions from: Carbon sequestered by: “For years, we’ve wanted to do rooftop solar. Namaste Žižek The politics and poetics of this writing cut across borders and time, meeting at a place in which disparate theory, politics, and bodies touch. As activists tirelessly battled to repeal section 377 of the Indian penal code, the act which officially criminalises sodomy, fighting against rantings of “religious leaders” and the hypocrisy of the Indian state (See Bhan 2005, Menon, 2007, Joshi, 2009), Slavoj Žižek rang in the new year in New Delhi. Žižek’s visit to India happened in 2010 with a series of public lectures that marked the launch of his recent text, First as Tragedy, Then as Farce. Žižek spoke as part of a lecture series produced by Navayana, India’s first and only publishing house which focuses on caste from an anti-caste perspective (www.navayana.org).i Žižek arrived at a moment when radical thought is necessary. India stands at a particular political juncture in which it is currying favour with the United States to become the world’s preferred “Asian tiger” on the backs of the landless, the rural, the poor.ii At the same time, the nation defines itself against “terrorist” elements by demonizing Pakistan and pathologising Muslims within and outside the nation.iii Finally, as we waited for Žižek to obtain necessary documents to cross the border, the ironies of our moment became clear as the Indian 1 government opened its borders to the circus of greed called the Commonwealth Games while making visa requirements more stringent in the wake of the arrest of U.S citizen David Headley for his alleged connection to the 2008 Mumbai bombings (the Guardian 2009).

As that discussion noted, the term “ARG” is somewhat problematic, and functions less as a clear definition than as a working title for projects that tend to share certain characteristics. Campaigns are likely to be considered ARGs if they bear several of the following traits: - Interactive stories that unfold across media platforms and real-life spaces - Offer an interactive, dispersed narrative experience - Require participants to reconstruct elements of a fragmented narrative - Refuse to acknowledge themselves as games - Have no clear rules or guidelines for participants - Require participants to solve difficult challenges or puzzles to progress - Encourage or require the formation of collaborative player communitiesa While Not (Just) An Advertisement was written to provide a systematic overview tracing the evolution and possible applications of alternate reality games, this paper is intended to supplement that discussion with a detailed case study of a recent, high- profile ARG campaign called The Lost Experience, and in the process, to consider current challenges facing both content producers and corporate sponsors moving into the ARG space. Background: The rising prevalence of dementia is impacting on acute hospitals and placing increased expectations on health and social care professionals to improve the support and services they are delivering. It has been recommended that good practice in dementia care relies on adopting a palliative approach to care and meeting people’s physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs. Increased dementia training for staff that includes initiatives that promote dignity; enhancing communication skills and recognizing that a person with dementia may be approaching the end of their lives are needed. Our study aim was to explore whether Namaste Care is an acceptable and effective service for people with advanced dementia being cared for on an acute hospital ward. Methods: This was an exploratory qualitative interview, pilot study. Individual, semi-structured, face- to-face interviews were conducted with hospital healthcare staff working in an area of the hospital where Namaste Care had been implemented. Data were analysed using the framework approach. Results: Eight interviews were completed with members of the multidisciplinary ward team.

Pain, quality of life, and medication costs were assessed for 31 residents before and 6 months after they participated in Namaste Care. The program consisted of two 2-h sessions per day for 5 days per week. Namaste Care staff provided high sensory care to residents in a calm, therapeutic environment in a small group setting. Feasibility was assessed in terms of recruitment rate, number of sessions attended, retention rate, and any adverse events. Acceptability was assessed using qualitative interviews with staff and family. Results: The feasibility of Namaste Care was acceptable with a participation rate of 89%.

When I was in high school —11th grade — I took a world religion course. We were introduced most of the major religions. And when we got to Buddhism, I quickly realized that this was probably the religion that was at the bottom of my list of what I would ever want to be part of. Its focus was all about suffering and all about getting rid of desire and, in my mind, what made life worth living was pursuing what I desired. I was kind of a sensationalist and I was seeking thrills in a kind of hedonistic way in whatever — relationships, nature, drugs, adventures — whatever it was. So the idea of getting rid of desires just didn’t sit so well. Because I wanted to be happy, and I still do. And we all do. I just had some misunderstandings about it. So it took a few years, plus some more suffering, until I started getting a deeper understanding of what it really meant to be happy — true happiness. So, in a nutshell, Buddhism does not say get rid of desires. It really is saying: See if it is possible to let go of the grasping, because it hurts, it causes suffering. In fact, the grasping actually gets in the way of experiencing what we really desire. It’s kind of like that. And very central to the teachings and practices of Buddhism are ways to come into presence so that we actually can experience the most profound quality of well-being that’s possible.
