34

How do we deliver Family Learning Courses? Our team of six curriculum co-ordinators work with partners to set up courses in schools, children’s centres and other community settings. Each co- ordinator has a specific geographical and curriculum responsibility. We offer courses in FEML (Family English, Maths and Language) or WFL (Wider Family Learning). Courses are either for mothers, fathers, carers and children to learn together or for adults only. Courses can range from a single session to sessions of two hours a week over a whole term.

Longer FEML courses are designed to offer learners the opportunity to undertake functional skills qualifications in English and Maths if they wish to do so. WFL courses cover subjects such as IT, cookery, crafts, gardening, story sacks, healthy lifestyles and music. They are usually delivered as joint courses where families learn together whereas FEML courses can be joint or adult only. Some courses can be offered as engagement activities although on longer WFL courses adults may wish to take NOCN qualifications.

All tutors and teaching assistants have enhanced CRB clearance and all tutors have a teaching qualification. Family Learning courses are free to learners and there is no charge to partner organisations for the provision of tutors, teaching assistants and all resources. If a partner provides a crèche for children of learners there may also be a contribution to all or some of the cost of this crèche.

A co-ordinator will plan the course in detail with a partner before it starts and a partnership agreement will be provided for each course delivered in a centre. It should be noted that this free provision is targeted in areas of social disadvantage in the county and that learners undertaking FEML courses should not already have a level 2 qualification in Maths and English.
