SIR SAMUEL WAY BUILDING (former MOORES DEPARTMENT STORE) 259 Victoria Square

In recommending the facades of the former Moore's Store for inclusion on Heritage List, no suggestion is being made that the works should be endorsed as an example of heritage conservation. however, that the facades do have particular with the staircase, they are all that remain of Charles Moores was one of Adelaide's major department stores, and which was of significance because of its Victoria Square location, away from the main retail centre. The facades are also of some note because of their by Garlick and Jackman, and because of the new work on the building which has meant that the facades have taken on a new significance, as part of a major new in Adelaide.

Architecturally, the facades are of interest since in the Classical idiom popular at this time. The pilasters are set on pedestals, jointed at the base by small windows. The composition is enhanced by a central bow fronted feature Ionic columns as well as a large entablature which is broken over this central feature giving it further prominence. Elevations are terminated by recessed corner "pavillions", the whole being vigorously detailed, all surface treatment being carried out in cast cement and run cement

It is of interest that Moore specifically chose the architect William Lucas to design the staircase. (Lucas subsequently in Adelaide and the architectural partnership Lucas Parker & Lake resulted from this )

The environmental significance of this item is very of its contribution to the amenity of Victoria Square. It is a the south-west corner which, because of its scale and Supreme Court building and the nearby Court the National Estate Victoria Square Conservation Area.

The facades are all that remain of the structure of the Charles Moore Their integrity has been compromised a little because of alterations to the ground floor and because of the new roof. In this context it is relevant to note that the store was extensively damaged by fire in March 1948, and subs rebuilt afterwards. Thus, besides the staircase the facades are the only part of the store which have survived intact from the time of opening of the store.

HOUSE - "DUNMOOCHIN" 1 Maud Street

This item is of some significance because of its age, but primarily for the manner in which it illustrates features of the residential development of the City, particularly in the south-western corner which in latter year was largely given over to commercial This cottage was built in 1857/58 for John Griffin and remained in his until 1914.

This building is important as a hinge-pin in the intact Maud - Alfred Street residential group. It is also intrinsical meritorious as representative of the Adelaide vernacular of bluestone rubble with brick quoins and surrounds to openings. The form of this item is somewhat typical, however, with double-fronted symmetrical elevation and raised gable ends which bound a slate clad roof. The is by a picket fence which enhances its original appearance. form of the building is virtually identical to the shown in the 1880 Smith Survey.

This is a distinctive element because of its s and its corner location. It is a key element in both Alfred and Maud Streets, and is and reinforced by similar development mostly predating the Smith of 1880. Dunmochin is of particular environmental for the manner in which it highlights what was once the essential character of the area.

The integrity of the item appears to be high.

RESIDENCE AND FORMER SHOP 293 Morphett Street

This item is historically significant because of its age, and its illustration of early building techniques and features. In 1852 it was described as a shop - and in 1861 as a Blacksmith's Shop. It is thus significant for the manner in which it illustrates aspects of the residential development of Adelaide and that of associated local trade and retail facilities.

This small structure exemplifies the early Adelaide constructional genre with gabled walling and casement windows to the residence and brick parapet and small paned window to the shop. The form of this building indicates a piecemeal development typical of much of Adelaide's vernacular buildings. The small paned shop front is of particular interest and would appear to be set under a timber bressummer.

The environmental significance of this building is although it is situated near and adjacent to 19th commercial It is notable for the pavement alignment of the shop front, the form of which is now extremely rare in Adelaide. This type of front was by the use of cast iron and plate glass.

The integrity of this item would appear to be although the cement rendered surfaces are unfortunate. The building appears to be in a relatively frail state, with the beam over the shop front from considerable deflection.

ST. LUKE'S RECTORY 35 Whitmore Square

This item is historically significant primarily because of its association with St. Lukes Church. This rectory was built in 1875-1876, after an earlier one had been destroyed by fire. The illustrates the development and consolidation of the Anglican Church in general and that of St. Lukes in particular. The location of the Church and also illustrates the one-time residential character of this of South Adelaide.

Architecturally the building is of considerable interest as it was designed by E.J. Woods at a time when he was responsible for the design and execution of many ecclesiastical buildings. Of rather standard form, however, it is representative of many of the bay windowed villas erected during these prosperous years. is of interest with crisp though simple stucco work to surrounds to openings and the neat vents located in the gabled The Smith Survey of 1880 shows a simple villa. J.thas since then been extended, most notably at the rear and to the Sturt Street frontage where a rectangular bay has been added.

The environmental significance of this item is high. It has intrinsic significance because of its form and detailing and the prominence gained from its important corner siting. It is of added significance for the manner in which it complements and reinforces St. Lukes Church and Hall. This complex is a visually significant building group on the western side of Whitmore Square.

The integrity of the item appears to be high.

SHOP 1 7 5 Stu rt S tree t

This shop was built for A. Delavaux in 1877. It retains many of its original features, notably the shop front. It is thus of historical significance for the manner in which it illustrates features of the commercial development of the City.

The form of this building was once commonly found in the City; a reflection of the dependence of local residential communities on local shopping facilities. With the social and demographic changes of the 20th century this type of building is now rarely found in such original condition. Although a verandah to Sturt Street has probably been removed, the gabled form, the parapet to the facade and the delicate shop front remain notable. The form of this cast iron and timber shop front is of particular interest being representative of the design of many 19th century commercial premises.

This is a distinctive item because of the rentention of the original shop front. However, it is dominated by larger scale development, and because of the general diversity of the streetscape, the visual contribution made by this particular i tern is minimal.

The external integrity of this item is high.

SC 33. ITEM No. 160 DONOVAN, MARSDEN, STARK CITY OF ADELAIDE HERITAGE SURVEY, 1982

SHOP AND RESIDENCE 143 Sturt Street

This item is of historic significance primarily for the manner in which it demonstrates aspects of the development of south-west Adelaide which are no longer commonly found. It is characteristic of the time before the popularisation of motor transport when the spirit of community was more evident in the western part of the City and residents there were dependent upon local shops and trades people to satisfy their needs.

This attractive and well maintained building is important architecturally for its exemplification of the Adelaide retail vernacular. Such small shops once common on corners and at the nodal points of pedestrian and vehicular routes were distinctive elements of Adelaide streetscapes, with large verandahs, concealed gutters and large parapets and attached residences.

Constructed of bluestone r~ble with brick dressings this building has preserved a remarkably original external appearance even retaining the large paned shop front.

The environmental significance of this item is high because of its corner site.

The integrity of the structure seems to be high although the interior has been upgraded for modern use as a coffee shop.

REMAINS BUSHMEN'S CLUB 70 Whitmore Square

The bluestone wings to the east and west of the present William Booth Memorial Horne are historically significant for the manner in which they illustrate part of the social life of Adelaide and that of male country visitors in particular. They represent the only remains of the Bushmen's Club, which was begun in 1870 when pastoralism was the predominant theme in economy.

To some extent therefore, these buildings are representative of the economic dependence of Adelaide and South Australia on pastoral activities, together with the boom period, when the wheat lands were pushed further north during the "good" years of the late 1860s and 1870s. The Club had as its Trustees, John Howard Angas, David Murray and William Kyffin Thomas and in the 1870's those in office were N. Blyth, H. Giles and C.B. Young all of whom were prominent in the development of South Australia.

In 1870 the Club was located in the former house of Judge .T.A. 614) by which time this building (dating from c.1840) had been renovated for its new function. The Club, founded to serve male visitors was philanthropic in nature, although membership was required in order that visitors could make use of all its facilities. The choice of its location was a conscious one, whereby its members were semi-isolated from the then licentious activities of the area and the many hotels (some 120) operating in Adelaide during the 1870's.

This Club was incorporated in 1878, the buildings and associated land being subsequently sold in 1899 to representatives of the Salvation Army, H.H. Booth and W. Pearl, incorporation of the Bushmen's Club being cancelled in 1938. During the economic boom of the 1870s the Club reached its zenith with the bluestone wings, the subject of this description, being erected in 1871 and 1872 due to of membership. In 1878 the two-storeyed "house" was built facing Gilbert Street although this was demolished in 1979. The Salvation Army, therefore inherited the above buildings and until 1910 these formed the nucleus of their "Prison Gate Brigade Horne". In 1910 the remodelled former home of Judge Cooper was demolished and the present William Booth Memorial Home was erected.

The Salvation Army began as the East London Christian Mission in 1865, but by 1878 had expanded to such a degree that a more was seen as desirable, it being renamed the Salvation direction of William Booth. It is significant that the branch of the "Army" began in Adelaide's Botanic Park on 1880 and that nineteen years later Whitmore Square had of such a substantial undertaking. Although ini Salvation Army movement spread quickly and by 1883 Horne had been erected in Carlton, Victoria. The Whitmore Square are representative therefore of of the Salvation Army in Australia and the two b Whitmore Square are of additional historical s association with the Bushmen's Club. 37. Architecturally the bluestone wings are only of marginal significance. They are well constructed of bluestone rubble with cement dressings, their austerity being originally relieved by decorative bargeboards. The wing to the west was erected by in 1871 at a cost of 476 pounds to the design of James Cumming. In December, 1872, the corresponding eastern wing was opened, also designed by Cumming and built by Farr at a cost of 540 pounds. Internally this wing was divided into a dining room 40 ft. x 25 ft., and a smoking room 25 ft. x 16 ft. x 18 ft. high.

Both bluestone wings were originally of identical design and are naturally complementary. They contribute to the residential scale and character of Whitmore Square, the Salvation Army complex as a whole helping to close southern vistas along theeastern edge of the Square. The buildings are in reasonable order although the eastern wing has been affected salt damp, which has been exacerbated by the application of render and hard pointing.

This item is historically significant in the first instance for the manse associated with the now demolished Draper Memorial church. It is significant too because for a time in the 'thirties used hostel for boys and is thus closely identified with the work of the Methodist Church in Adelaide. It remained the the Methodist Church until 1964. The building reinforces what was once the residential character of this portion of South Adelaide.

This building erected in 1883 is significant for the way in which it reflects the confidence of the last three years of the boom era in South Australia. Although of rather standard two-storeyed double fronted form, the item is distinguished by elaborate stuccoed finish to surrounds of openings. The ground floor paired windows topped by a broken are notable as is the broad front verandah with central and smaller flanking pediments to the balcony. The plaster cornice to eaves is also unusual and distinctive.

This item is environmentally significant because of its scale and retention of original detail. It is complemented by adjacent of a similar scale, and nearby buildings of a similar age. It is thus an important element in a significant group which overlooks the South Park Lands.

The essential integrity of the building has been The brick additions at the rear are unobtrusive and the addition of screens to ground floor windows, and air-conditioning units are of little significance.

This item is of historical significance because of its association with eminent colonists and because of the manner in which it illustrates features of the residential development of Adelaide. The original section of the building was erected in 1860/61 for Thomas Sparnon, but was purchased soon thereafter by A.J. Tolley, its first occupant. For a time during the mid seventies it was occupied by J.P. Stow a notable businessman. In 1881 the present facade was built for Tolley and for a time the building was later occupied by Dr. John F. Joyce who established the Adelaide Eye Infirmary and Queen's Hospital on Greenhill Road on the south side of the Park Lands.

This building is important for its two main periods of construction, these stages being marked by differences in ceiling heights. The building is an attractive example from the High Victorian boom period and is characterised by bluestone rubble walling, cast iron enriched verandah and balcony, and stuccoed dressings. The original appearance of this structure is complemented by adjacent development to the west and its alignment with the pavement.

This building is environmentally significant because of its visual contribution to the streetscape. It is a distinctive element because of its scale, style, detailing and street alignment. It also forms part of a significant group of buildings which are of similar scale and style and which, together, make a positive contribution to the South Terrace streetscape. This building is the easternmost of the group.

The essential integrity of this item is high, although a long low single storeyed addition has been made at the rear.

This house was built for the merchant John Dungey in 1882. It is of historical significance because of the manner in which it illustrates features of the residential development of Adelaide.

This building is notable for its original appearance and construction Although single fronted, this item is important for its eclectic use of ornament and stuccoed enrichment. The facade is characterised by of squared random coursed faced sandstone, a type of corbel table to the gable, pointed arch surrounds to openings and unusual spandrel decoration. The ground floor openings are detailed with pilasters and columns with foliated capitals. Although substantial additions have been made at the rear, the front section of the building remains intrins significant with its unusual interpretation of "Venetian Gothic" forms and detail, and is of particular importance to adjoining buildings.

This is a distinctive building because of its scale, style, and shallow setback. Its environmental significance is enhanced because it is the central item of a group of three buildings of similar scale. The item, as part of a significant group of buildings, makes an important contribution to the South Terrace streetscape.

The integrity of the South Terrace frontage to the item is high. The brick additions at the rear cannot be seen from South Terrace.
