Breaking Open the Word July 19, 2020 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 106 Gospel MT 13:24-43

Spiritual Reflection: Commentaries have informed us that there is a particular type of weed that looks like wheat when it first starts to sprout. As the wheat and weed grow they become more and more different looking. I think we can liken this to the phenomenon of fake news. Sometimes the best thing we can do is stop and take a breath and give the fake news stories time to show themselves as untrue.

Spiritual Questions: 1. How do you tell fake news from real news? 2. How much gossip do you participate in over the course of a day? 3. How can you work on improving the good inside you? 4. How can you work on ridding yourself of the bad inside you? 5. Are you more weed or wheat?

As the universal Church begins a transition back to the celebration of public liturgies, many are still mindful of the need to practice social distancing and have expressed concerns about using worship aids that have been handled by others. Aware of these concerns, some dioceses are eliminating printed missalettes and encouraging parishioners to download digital editions or to carry a personal worship aid. In response, MAGNIFICAT is offering special $5 subscriptions to enable the faithful to follow the liturgy with personal copies of either a printed or digital edition of MAGNIFICAT.
