Just as important as the start of a race is the finish. The finish can mean first place versus second place by 1/100th of a second—just ask about his win against Cavic at the 2008 Beijing Olympics (video link used for finish below @ 5:35min). Knowing stroke count and distance is key to finishing your race as strong as possible. Below are some links to some videos and key pointers to properly finish each stroke at the wall.

 FREESTYLE  Be sure you know your count? Just like in backstroke, you shouldn’t need to look up and get out of streamline to see where the wall is. (Hint—the black “T” line at the bottom of the pool indicates the wall). Getting out of streamline slows you down. You want to finish to the wall with as much speed as possible  Reach or stretch as far forward above your head even rolling a little to the side to capture precious inch- es as you reach for the wall  BACKSTROKE  Always know your count from the flags to finish. Don’t forget to actually count!  Be sure to not be completely submerged after the dolphin dive finish  BREAST AND FLY  2 hands must touch simultaneously  Hands must not be interlocked nor be on top of one another  Plan ahead to have your arm extension to finish perfectly at the wall— this may mean taking a couple smaller strokes during the closing of your swim.

NOTE: All strokes should have hands extending out flat and touch with finger- tips. Never bend at your wrists and touch with the palm of your hands. Leah Smith Swims to win the 400 IM! Some days it all clicks and what others may not have believed in becomes your reality. It takes a lot of personal belief and perseverance to achieve any goal, and to be consistently re- ferred to as the swimmer second to the top ranked and best known female distance swimmer, , it takes even more strength and determination. And this is exactly what Leah Smith had when she decided to cross over from the dis- tance freestyle events to the 400 IM race at the 2017 Phillips 66 US National Championships. Her 400 IM win helped in edg- ing out Miss Ledecky for the top spot in National Points earned after day 3!

Background Born April 19, 1996 Leah Smith is a distance swimmer originally from Pittsburgh, PA. Smith is a member of USA Swimming’s National Team in addition to the women’s swimming team at the University of Virginia, where she’s a school record holder in the 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyles. Her best event is probably the 500 freestyle – she’s the second-fastest U.S. swimmer ever in the event. Her time at the University of Virginia has certainly helped her improve in the sport and gain many accolades especially between her freshman and sophomore years.

Swim History Leah quickly moved through the ranks since 2012 when she was a member of the National Junior Team. Two short years later she earned a spot on the US Pan Pacific Championship roster then in 2015 broke the 400 meter freestyle record at the World University Games in South Korea. Later that year Leah assister her 200 Freestyle relay team earn a gold medal at the FINA World Championships and ended the year with a 10th place ranking in the 800 freestyle. Continuing on from her 2015 successes, Smith continued to improve her distance events in 2016 and earned a spot on the US Olympic Team headed for Rio where Smith earned a bronze medal in the 400M Freestyle

2017 Leah Smith continues to impress. Her NCAA 2nd place finishes to Ledecky are still impressive as they are well ahead of the rest of the swimmers. She was almost 22 full seconds ahead of the third place finisher Megan Byrnes in the 1650 Free. Smith continues her successes as she races June 27th—July 1st at the US National Championships. It’s always fun to get a swimmer’s perspective after such races as the 800 Free or the 400 IM and see what they’re think- ing. Leah will compete in over 3000 meters of swimming during the 5 day meet. Good luck Leah!!!
