Bollywood's Lens on Indian Society Professor Anita Weiss INTL 448/548, Spring 2018 [email protected] Mondays, 4-7:20 pm 307 PLC; 541 346-3245 Course Syllabus Film has the ability to project powerful images of a society in ways conventional academic mediums cannot. This is particularly true in learning about India, which is home to the largest film industries in the world. This course explores images of Indian society that emerge through the medium of film. Our attention will be focused on the ways in which Indian society and history is depicted in film, critical social issues being explored through film; the depicted reality vs. the historical reality; and the powerful role of the Indian film industry in affecting social orientations and values. Course Objectives: 1. To gain an awareness of the historical background of the subcontinent and of contemporary Indian society; 2. To understand the sociocultural similarities yet significant diversity within this culture area; 3. To learn about the political and economic realities and challenges facing contemporary India and the rapid social changes the country is experiencing; 4. To learn about the Indian film industry, the largest in the world, and specifically Bollywood. Class format Professor Weiss will open each class with a short lecture on the issues which are raised in the film to be screened for that day. We will then view the selected film, followed by a short break, and then extensive in- class discussion. Given the length of most Bollywood films, we will need to fast-forward through much of the song/dance and/or fighting sequences.

  • Paresh Maity
O N L I N E TRUNK SHOW 16 September -15 October 2020 A Capsule Collection of 9 Artworks PARESH MAITY Hope Paresh Maity has returned, in his recent series of nine aquarelles, titled ‘Hope’, to an early and memorable phase of his career when he produced lambent waterscapes redolent of Bengal’s Ganga delta. Dominated by dramatically illuminated skies, his recent waterscapes are punctuated by occasional sailboats, isolated signs of the human presence in nature’s grand theatre of wind, cloud, and wave. These scenes, reminiscent of fraught moments of pause or passage in the cinema of Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak, stir us deeply. Maity presents the clouds as dunes and the overcast sky as an upward tilting beach. Or might the sky be a tide coming in, dissolving the horizon? The moody sea shimmers past dreaming trees or surges up in mountains of water. Against storm and current, the sailboats hold out, vulnerable yet defiant. Ranjit Hoskote Hope - 1 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Hope - 2 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Hope - 3 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Hope - 4 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Hope - 5 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Hope - 6 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Hope - 7 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Hope - 8 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Hope - 9 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Paresh Maity (born Tamluk, 1965) is strongly associated with his paintings, rendered in a distinctive palette of shadowed yellows, vivid greens and burnished brown tones.

Kervan – International Journal of Afro-Asiatic Studies n. 21 (2017) Item Girls and Objects of Dreams: Why Indian Censors Agree to Bold Scenes in Bollywood Films Tatiana Szurlej The article presents the social background, which helped Bollywood film industry to develop the so-called “item numbers”, replace them by “dream sequences”, and come back to the “item number” formula again. The songs performed by the film vamp or the character, who takes no part in the story, the musical interludes, which replaced the first way to show on the screen all elements which are theoretically banned, and the guest appearances of film stars on the screen are a very clever ways to fight all the prohibitions imposed by Indian censors. Censors found that film censorship was necessary, because the film as a medium is much more popular than literature or theater, and therefore has an impact on all people. Indeed, the viewers perceive the screen story as the world around them, so it becomes easy for them to accept the screen reality and move it to everyday life. That’s why the movie, despite the fact that even the very process of its creation is much more conventional than, for example, the theater performance, seems to be much more “real” to the audience than any story shown on the stage. Therefore, despite the fact that one of the most dangerous elements on which Indian censorship seems to be extremely sensitive is eroticism, this is also the most desired part of cinema. Moreover, filmmakers, who are tightly constrained, need at the same time to provide pleasure to the audience to get the invested money back, so they invented various tricks by which they manage to bypass censorship.

Chapter-II A Brief History of Television in India 47 Chapter-II A Brief History of Television in India Television in India— a chronology of events Television came to India on September 15, 1959 with experimental transmission from Delhi. It was a modest beginning with a make shift studio, a low power transmitter and only 21 community television sets. All India Radio provided the engineering and programme professionals. By 1975 television stations came up in Calcutta, Chennai, Srinagar, Amritsar and Lucknow. In 1975-76 the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment brought television programmes for people in 2400 villages in the most inaccessible of the least developed areas tlirough a satellite lent to India for one year. Doordarshan is a Public broadcast terrestrial television channel run by Prasar Bharati, a board formed by the Government of India. It is one of the largest broadcasting organizations in the world in terms of the infrastructure of studios and transmitters. Doordarshan had its beginning with the experimental telecast started in Delhi in September, 1959 with a small fransmitter and a makeshift studio.
