Problem

The Highways Department for the Re- gion tendered a contract for the construction works to eliminate the sharp bends in the stretch of road between the junction with the Remontello Provincial Highway and the town of Loreto Apru- tino (Pescara). These works affected a section of State Highway 151 “Valle del ”.

Solution

The project included the horizontal and vertical remodelling of the road alignment, with widening of several stretches. In order to minimise the en- vironmental impact of the works, the designer During construction decided to adopt reinforced soil technology using Terramesh. The lowest sections were formed by a front face of gabions whilst, for the upper sec- tions, a facing which could be covered with vege- tation was preferred.

In order to minimise the costs, the main reinforce- ment elements high-strength used Paralink, a polyester geogrid covered with polyethylene. The ultimate strengths of the geogrids used for this project were 400 and 800 kN/m and they were placed in a staggered manner as specified in the design.
