We moved next door to Central Hall in 1973 and on many oc casions we wished it had been "empty and abandoned". Poor Margaret Cunningham put up with our complaints with an ever gra cious "I'm so sorry, Mr. William son... I will speak to them about it!" when we told her of rowdiness and very late hours kept by hall users. Then came the renovations. They asked our approval to put on a new front porch. I have a Driftwood cutting of Nov. 3, 1976 which states: "The (Central Community Hall) Society has $12,000 on hand now, with which to proceed to the renovations to the hall. Another grant of $5,000 has been promised by Branch 32 of the OAPO when the work gets under way." The same article pre viously referred to a grant of $11,000 from the recreation and travel branch of the provincial government and subsequent ar ticles refer to federal grants. A giant rummage sale raised over $2,000. It seems that the original "face-lift" was estimated at $30,000 but ul timately the work cost more than $50,000. (A Feb. 7, 1979 Driftwood headline reads: "Build ing costs at Central Hall total $75,000 to date" but this may have been an overstatement as the text reads $50,000.) Interestingly, at the annual meeting, January 15, 1979, there were not enough members to form a quorum, although the minutes and treasurer's report were passed. FUNDS From Page A12 maintain the high quality of health care those boards would like to pro vide, it is necessary to look to other sources of funding. With this purpose in mind, the newly-formed foundation will develop programs to raise funds and will actively seek community support. Donations can be gifts of funds, property both real and per sonal, memorial bequests, endow ments, life insurance or inheritances. In this regard, it is im portant to understand that all gifts, large or small will be most wel come and will be put to good use. The foundation is dedicated to ensuring that donors will see the benefits of their gifts. During any taxation year the foundation is re quired to expend 80 per cent of the previous year's receipted dona tions with the exception of gifts of capital received from bequests of inheritances. Donors may also specify the area in which their gift is utilized. Currently the hospital is in the process of acquiring new radiology equipment. Funding for this equip ment is in place. At the same time, the board recognizes the need to redesign and renovate the out patient service area. The workload of the laboratory, radiology and other out-patient departments is constantly increasing. This project will help to streamline the delivery of these important services. As an initial project, the founda tion has undertaken to raise ap proximately $40,000, the unfunded portion of the cost of these changes. In the past, many individuals, businesses and organizations throughout the Gulf Islands have made gifts to the hospital and they were such a help. Foundation members hope they will continue and many more mem bers of the community will also see fit to support their hospital through the foundation. Further information can be ob tained from the following founda tion board members: Ron McQuiggan, Sandy Gordon, Bill Toulmin, Gil Mouat, Bea Carr and Patrick Lee. Readers can contact Vicki Curtis, chief executive of ficer of the hospital at 537-5545. Pag* A14 GULF ISLANDS DRIFTWOOD Wednesday, Fabruary 19, 1992 Gulf Islands Trading Co

RRSP INFORMATION Canadian taxpayers get break with RRSPs Canadian taxpayers are getting a break in at least one direction this year — on their Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs). Described by financial planners as the most generous tax incentive in the world, RRSPs permit Canadians to defer income tax on the money they invest, up to allowable maximums. In the case of people who are not in a company pension plan, the ceiling for RRSP contributions made up to February 29, 1992 is $11,500 or 18 per cent of earned income — whichever is less. The sum invested can be deducted before income tax is calculated. The result is a smaller tax bill or, for those who pay tax via payroll deduction, a larger refund. RRSPs can be purchased through mutual fund or investment com panies, bank stock brokers, insurance companies or registered sales representatives. Canadians put more than $11 billion into mutual funds in 1990. The amount is expected to be even greater for 1991. The average contributor will find that their tax savings will represent Driftwood photo by Ian Noble anywhere between one-quarter and half of the amount they're invest ing. NEW FIRE TRUCK: Salt Spring Island's new fire truck arrived last week. And the old Ganges fire truck was sent to Fulford Hall, ousting the old Fulford truck into partial retirement Partial This year's maximum of $11,500 will be increased by $1,000 each because fire chief Les Wagg said a decision on its fate has not been made. year until 1995, when the maximum will be $15,500. Last year, the limit was $7,500. Revenue Canada mailed out notices to taxpayers who are enrolled in company pension plans, advising them of the allowable contribution they can make in a personal RRSP. YOUR ISLAND Is your Most Canadians entrust their RRSPs to an established financial tax bracket group, although self-administered plans are permissible.
