About Choral Evensong

The service of Evening Prayer was created by Thomas Cranmer in 1549 for the first prayer book of the Anglican Communion. Relying upon the ancient monastic cycle of prayers, the two offices of Vespers and Compline were combined. Evensong is drawn almost entirely from the Bible. Its primary purpose is to proclaim the wonderful works of God in history and in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Its secondary purpose is to evoke from the worshiper a response of praise, penitence, prayer and obedience.

Choral Evensong is sung Evening Prayer; usually, the choir sings the and responses, the psalmody, the canticles and an anthem, while the congregation participates vicariously - listen- ing attentively to the choir’s and precentor’s offering of music and to the proclamation of the Scriptures.

This evening we hope you are still able to release the cares of the day, and enjoy “the beauty of holiness” inherent in this service. As we prepare for God’s presence in worship, please be aware that some prefer to be quiet at this time. You are, however, invited to greet your fellow worshipers.

When the instructions for posture are not given within the service, please stand or kneel as you are able and as seems comfortable to you.

Opening Sentences

Officiant Let my prayer be set forth in thy sight as the incense, and let the lifting up of my hands be as an evening sacrifice.

1 Confession and Absolution (bcp 62)

Officiant Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. Silence may be kept. Please kneel

All Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

Officiant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

3 Please be seated Psalm 48 Magnus Dominus by Edwin George Monk (1819–1900)

1 Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised; * in the city of our God is his holy hill.

2 Beautiful and lofty, the joy of all the earth, is the hill of Zion, * the very center of the world and the city of the great King.

3 God is in her citadels; * he is known to be her sure refuge.

4 Behold, the kings of the earth assembled * and marched forward together.

5 They looked and were astounded; * they retreated and fled in terror.

6 Trembling seized them there; * they writhed like a woman in childbirth, like ships of the sea when the east wind shatters them.

7 As we have heard, so have we seen, in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God; * God has established her for ever.

8 We have waited in silence on your loving-kindness, O God, * in the midst of your temple.

9 Your praise, like your Name, O God, reaches to the world’s end; * your right hand is full of justice.

10 Let Mount Zion be glad and the cities of Judah rejoice, * because of your judgments.

11 Make the circuit of Zion; walk round about her; * count the number of her towers.

4 12 Consider well her bulwarks; examine her strongholds; * that you may tell those who come after.

13 This God is our God for ever and ever; * he shall be our guide for evermore.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Lessons

The First Lesson: Malachi 3:1–4

See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the cov- enant in whom you delight—indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears?

For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.

Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

5 Please stand Magnificat: Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in F Harold Darke (1888–1976)

My soul doth magnify the Lord, * and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded * the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth * all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, * and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him * throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; * he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He hath put down the mighty from their seat, * and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, * as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

6 The Second Lesson: Luke 2:22–32 Please be seated

When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord”), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,

“Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.”

Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

7 Please stand Nunc Dimittis: Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in F Harold Darke (1888–1976)

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, * according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, * which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, * and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

9 Anthem Great is the Lord Edward Elgar (1857–1934)

Nathan Halbur, baritone

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness, beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. God hath made Himself known in her palaces for a refuge. For, lo! the kings assembled themselves, they passed by together; they saw, then they were amazed; they were dismay’d, they hasted away; trembling took hold of them there, pain, as of a woman in travail, as with the east wind that breaketh the ships of Tarshish. As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever. We have thought on Thy loving kindness, O God, in the midst of Thy temple: as is thy name, O God, so is Thy praise unto the ends of the earth; Thy right hand is full of righteousness. Let mount Zion be glad, let the daughters of Judah rejoice, because of Thy judgments; walk about Zion and go round about her, tell the towers thereof, mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces, that ye may tell it to the generation following. For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even unto death. Amen. Text: Psalm 48

10 Please kneel Prayers (bcp 816)

Officiant Have mercy, O Lord, on all the sick, especially those we name now silently or aloud (pause), and with healing hands enfold them, that they may feel thy presence and be made whole. Amen.

Officiant Almighty God our heavenly Father, guide the nations of the world into the way of justice and truth, and establish among them peace which is the fruit of righteousness, that they may become the kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Officiant O God, whom saints and angels delight to worship in heaven: Be ever present with thy servants who seek through art and music to perfect the praises offered by thy people on earth; and grant to them even now glimpses of thy beauty, and make them worthy at length to behold it unveiled for evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

11 The General Thanksgiving (bcp 71)

Officiant and People

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all people. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

17 Christ Church Cambridge Mission Statement

Christ Church Cambridge is the Episcopal Church in Harvard Square – a community of God’s people who are varied in gifts and united in mission.

Our church is a place of affirming sanctuary to the diverse community around us. We welcome and affirm old and young, rich and poor, the LGBTQ+ community, those who are single, married, and families in their many forms. Christ Church seeks to be a place of hospitality, hope, redemption and peace for those in Cambridge and beyond.

We experience joy, laughter, and delight in moments of shared liturgical celebration, as we experi- ence the awe of God’s presence among us in moments of ministry that include healing prayers, outreach, and pastoral care with the people around us. We continue to discern our ministry, as our hearts are continually tuned to sing God’s praise.

Christ Church is open for quiet prayer and reflection during office hours.
