Appendix A INTRODUCTIO N

This inventory describes the photographs which are part of the MacMillan Bloedel Limited Records . The records were received by the Special Collections Division of the University of British Columbia Library from MacMillan Bloedel Limited in June of 1988. The inventory is a printout version of the online MacMillan Bloedel Photographs Database available to anyone accessing UBC Net. The photographs are described under the name of the company that generated them, reflecting th e origin of their collection. Thus, they are described as belonging to the six different companies tha t are now known as MacMillan Bloedel Limited : MacMillan Bloedel Limited, Powell River Company , Bloedel, Stewart & Welch, H.R. MacMillan Export, MacMillan & Bloedel and MacMillan, Bloede l and Powell River . Descriptions are at the series and file level . Boldface headings are those use d in the MacMillan Bloedel Limited Records Inventory to indicate to which subgroup and series th e photographs belong . File headings are either the exact title of the business file they belong to (eg. G.E. Hermann's Outgoing Correspondence) or if there was no file heading, an indication of th e content of the file . For full biographic and historical background on the various companies, officer s and departments, researchers should consult the MacMillan Bloedel Limited Records Inventory . A name and subject index at the back of this inventory directs researchers to photograp h descriptions and their file location. Researchers looking for shots of particular equipmen t such as A-frames, skidders, donkey engines, etc . should look under the subject heading "loggin g machinery". Similarly, those searching for photographs of edgers, barkers, jack ladders, etc . should look under, "lumbering machinery ." Shots of trees can be found under the subject heading , "forests and " as can shots of reforestation . Shots of logging, lumbering, the industry , paper industry and plywood industry should be looked for under those subject headings . A photographer's name index is also provided . Further work remains to be done on name indexes to standardize the name entries. Researchers will find that company names and in some case s photographers' names appear in the indexes in several different forms . The index names were drawn from information in the photographs, inscribed or stamped on the back of the photograph s or on the file fiolders . HISTORICAL NOTE

MacMillan Bloedel Limited is an amalgamated body of British Columbia's three major forestr y companies : H.R. MacMillan Export, Bloedel, Stewart & Welch and Powell River Company . It was established as MacMillan Bloedel and Powell River in 1960 and renamed MacMillan Bloedel i n 1966. These three parent companies specialized in different areas of the forestry industry . The Powell River Company was established in 1909 by Brooks-Scanlon Inc . of Minneapolis to produce newsprint. Bloedel, Stewart & Welch, also American owned, began operations in 1911 primarily a s a logging operation. H.R. MacMillan Export was incorporated in 1919 as a lumber exportin g agency. The merger between H .R. MacMillan Export and Bloedel, Stewart & Welch in 195 1 provided a great deal of choice land from Bloedel, Stewart & Welch and a strong administratvi e structure from H.R. MacMillan Export. In 1960, with the amalgamation with Powell Rive r Company the new company acquired strong pulp and paper operations . In 1956, H.R. MacMillan resigned as chairman . J.V. Clyne succeeded him in January 1958. MacMillan remained, however, on the Finance and Policy Committee until 1968 . After the merger with Powell River Company i n 1960, Clyne carried on as chairman of MacMillan, Bloedel and Powell, River, while H .S. Foley, formerly longtime chairman of the Powell River Company, became vice chairman. An incompatibility between H.S. Foley and Clyne led to Foley's resignation not long after . In 1962 McKinsey and Company, American management consultants, were hired by Clyne to evaluat e management practices . McKinsey's recommendations resulted in the reorganization of the corporatio n from 57 units into four self-sufficient business sectors:Logging Group, Wood Products Group, Pul p and Paper Group and Packaging Group. Top management personnel were now able to direct thei r energies to issues such as longterm acquisition planning. In 1968 expansion moved beyond woo d products and pulp and paper into allied industries, a direction which led to a crisis as th e Canadian Transport Co ., which been established by H .R. MacMillan Export in 1923, virtually collapsed in 1975 after a major buildup . As a result of the difficulties both the chairman, G .B. Currie, who had replaced Clyne in 1973, and the President and Chief Executvie Officer, D .W. Timmis, were fired in 1976 . Despite the temporary setback the corporation remained one o f 's largest forestry companies . SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The MacMillan Bloedel Limited Photographs consist of a wonderful collection of over 19,000 image s which document the logging, lumbering and paper making operations of the company and its predecessor s from 1861 to 1987 with the majority of the photographs dating in the mid 1900s . There are numerous shots of men and machinery in B.C.'s forests felling, sawing, skidding or hauling logs onto waiting trains and trucks. There are many historic images of steam donkeys, wooden A-frames and skyline skidders , locomotives and other obsolete forestry equipment . There are also shots of early logging camps, loggers and logging sites. There are a few images of seeding operations . There are views of exteriors of plants, mills and office buildings . There are also shots of interiors showing men and some women at work operating the saws, plywood, lumber, pulp and paper making machinery and packaging the products . The exterior shots show aerial, roof top and ground level views . Other images include studio portraits and group shots of corporate executives. Of particular interest will be the over 1,500 Jack Cash photographs, many of which are negatives which have never been seen, which depict logging and lumbering operation s in B.C. in the 1940s and 1950s. Also of interest will be the photograph library, consisting o f approximately 4,000 images categorized according to function and subject. Most of the photographs consist of black and white photoprints, though there are some phototransparencies and a few colour photoprints and slides. Apart from the Jack Cash photographs and the photograph library contained i n the MacMillan Bloedel operations photographs series, there are few photonegatives . The photographs are contained in 77 Hollinger boxes. Boxes 1 to 35 are described down to the file level and indexed to th e series or item level. Boxes 49 to 90 are accompanied by a finding aid in the form of index cards (boxes 9 1 to 93), originally used by the creator and describing the photographs down to the item level.

SUMMARY

General theme of the photo filing system is to fil e photographs by activity rather than by division except fo r aerials, exteriors, interiors (including construction) of plan t buildings, offices, etc .

In the cases where the number of photos of this typ e for one division is large, the division has a section of it s own, i .e . PULP & PAPER 2 - Alberni — aerials, exteriors , interiors . Where the number of photos is small, the division s of a category are combined into one section, i .e . PACKAGING 1 - - packaging divisions - aerials, exteriors, interiors .

The six-digit numbers indicate photo prints (B&W an d color), negatives and photo transparencies which are filed in plastic sleeves in three-ring binders in the photo library .

The letter-number combination indicates 35mm slide s and 21 transparencies which are filed in the Multiplex frame s in the photo library . Duplicate 35mm slides are filed in three - ring binders .

All slides and photos are indexed and cross reference d in numerical order by category .
