Informnorth is a totally unique and independent publication that is brought to you in association with: If you have sex without using a condom, you’re gambling on catching a sexually transmitted infection (STI). There are 25 different STIs. 8 of them, including Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and Syphilis, don’t always have obvious symptoms so you can pass them on without knowing. Worse still, 4 of them, while treatable, are incurable – Hepatitis B, Genital Herpes, Genital Warts and HIV. And it’s not just full sex that can land you with an STI. You can catch one from other kinds of contact - like with your mouth of from anal sex. The chances of picking up something in the Sex Lottery are surprisingly high - 1 in 9 people has had an STI. So the only way to make sure you’re safe is to use a condom. That way if you get lucky, you won’t get anything else.

22 February 2007 informnorth Drive To Keep Graduates In Region A new programme aimed at halting the 'brain drain' of digital media and technology graduates out of the region has been announced. Codeworks, the North East's centre of excellence for digital media and technology, Providing quality, impartial information, has received £390,000 of funding from regional development agency One NorthEast (ONE) to put 51 recent graduates to work in digital advice and guidance on learning and work companies within the North East on paid placements lasting either three or nine months. The new scheme is designed to give graduates a more in-depth experience and a better chance of securing a permanent position, as well as enabling host companies to get the most out of their employee. The first batch of 23 graduates is being recruited now to begin their place- ments immediately, with a second group of 28 graduates scheduled to start next summer. Additionally, any individual that is new to a role needs to be provided with a set of expectations - which, of course, should have been clearly communicated in the job description - so that regular performance reviews are reasonable and that they are also anticipated. Recruit, recruit, recruit - and if possible, try to bear in mind that it is always better to recruit from within Of course it is vital for companies of any shape and size to continue to recruit and engage their own workforce on an ongoing basis. The bottom line is that if you allow a valued employee to grow within your organisation by providing them with self-assessment and self-awareness tools and opportunities with the company, you make it easier for people to grow their careers inside, rather than outside. EDPIP provides health, education and training support for disabled young people in the district while working to improve the services provided by statutory and voluntary agencies. A group of disabled, young people, called the ‘Out of Shadows Group’, has been created to act as a ‘watchdog’ for EDPIP and their role is to influence existing provision and to work with all leisure and out of school play providers. In April 2006 the group held their Fun and Promotion Day at Shotton Hall Conference Centre. The day was a huge success with 193 young people and 90 adults attending. 20 organisations supported the day with information stands and interactive workshops.
