Coming Full Circle—My Current Research

Several years ago, I became interested in exploring the careers of female winemakers. Much of my career has been devoted to studying women’s career paths, especially in the context of work and family life, and to the study of women’s careers in male-dominated fields. Winemaking is viewed as a historically male-dominated field in which gender parity has allegedly been achieved. I was intrigued by what factors had brought about this change so that I could apply what I learned to other professions. Winemaking, in many ways, is an applied science, as is engineering, where many of the sub-disciplines remain male dominated. Thus, I was interested in learning what had brought about changes in the field of winemaking that could be applied to related fields, fields that had not yet been able to bring about such changes, at least not to the same extent.

Initially my plan was to conduct focus groups and interviews with a subset of women winemakers and to use themes from these conversations to design a larger study focused on factors associated with bringing about gender parity. This plan changed early on, however, when I learned how little information was available about women winemakers and how few people knew who they were. Thus, I set aside my initial focus, and became

Lucia Albino Gilbert, Ph.D. 4 Curriculum Vitae June 2019

convinced that a more important focus at this time was making the women winemakers themselves, and their career paths and contributions, more visible.

This research has multiple aspects. The first step was to develop a comprehensive list of winemakers in California, female and male, as no such list was available, in order to provide an accurate answer to the question, "who are the women?" as well as to test hypotheses about gender parity. (A study regarding gender parity appears on the website mentioned below and has been published.) Developing a comprehensive list turned out to be challenging. Although this was a daunting task, mostly accomplished by my calling wineries and visiting websites of the 3200+ wineries, I believe that I have now compiled the most comprehensive and accurate information currently available on women winemakers in California.

A second important step was to develop and launch the website, "Women Winemakers of California and Beyond,” www.womenwinemakers.com. This educational, non-profit, searchable website has as its goals to: (1) illuminate the career pathways of current women winemakers and their contributions to the wine industry, (2) provide information to women interested in a career in winemaking or in making further progress in their current careers, and (3) share the results of our on-going research with women winemakers. The website was initiated in July 2011 and now contains bio profiles of all the lead women winemakers in California and in most of the world’s prominent wine regions. The site is updated on a continuous basis and receives numerous visits each day from individuals around the world.

Additional steps have included a number of well-received studies, all posted on our website, that provide not only evidence for women’s success as winemakers but also make their presence more visible. A recent example is our article, “California's Trailblazing Women Winemakers: The First 20 Years (1965 through 1984),” which received world-wide readership. We have also taken our research abroad to Spain, Portugal, New Zealand, France, and Italy. A book entitled, Women Leading: Stories, Facts, and Figures on Winemakers in California and Beyond, is in progress.

Articles citing our research appear regularly on major wine blogs and in magazine articles and newspapers in the U.S. and in a number of other countries, including England, France, Italy, Argentina, New Zealand, and Brazil.

Finally, the University of California, Davis Library’s Special Collections department is archiving the Women Winemakers of California and Beyond website. UC Davis is home to the world’s premiere programs in viticulture and enology.

Focus of my Teaching

Research methods and design, Psychology of women and gender, Work and family, Gender issues in counseling and mental health.

All the courses I have taught addressed issues of gender and diversity, be it courses in research methods, counseling and psychotherapy, special topics, or the psychology of women. I have offered several special topics courses—among these are an advanced research seminar on gender; seminar on role conflict and life style, seminar on professional development and organizational functioning; and a feminist gestalt psychotherapy course. I also developed a course on “Women in Science” at UT Austin with a colleague in the Department of Physics, and an undergraduate freshman seminar, “An Introduction to the Psychology of Women and Gender.” At Santa Clara University (SCU), except for my years as Provost, I have taught on a regular basis, offering one to four courses each academic year. Doctoral Dissertations Directed A total of 67 students have completed their dissertation under my supervision, all at the University of Texas at Austin (SCU is primarily an undergraduate institution). A large percentage of my doctoral students have pursued feminist topics and concerned themselves with issues of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation. Several dissertations and articles based on a student’s dissertation have received awards or special recognition, and many dissertation studies are published in referred journals. A list of students’ names and dissertation titles is available on request.
