Schade, Ph.D. ii Abstract In my dissertation “Atomic Apocalypse – ‘Nuclear Fiction’ in German Literature and Culture,” I investigate the portrayal of the nuclear age and its most dreaded fantasy, the nuclear apocalypse, in German fictionalizations and cultural writings. My selection contains texts of disparate natures and provenance: about fifty plays, novels, audio plays, treatises, narratives, films from 1946 to 2009. I regard these texts as a genre of their own and attempt a description of the various elements that tie them together. The fascination with the end of the world that high and popular culture have developed after 9/11 partially originated from the tradition of nuclear fiction since 1945. The Cold War has produced strong and lasting apocalyptic images in German culture that reject the traditional biblical apocalypse and that draw up a new worldview. In particular, German nuclear fiction sees the atomic apocalypse as another step towards the technical facilitation of genocide, preceded by the Jewish Holocaust with its gas chambers and ovens. -

Isabel Palomo Merino Directed by: Dr. Javier Ortiz García, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid Madrid, 2017 Detective fiction has become one of the most popular genres in our present times; but why and how did detective fiction become so popular in Spain? This dissertation studies the development of the genre of detective fiction in Spain, written both by Spanish writers and as translations from American authors, framed within the historical period that extends from the Franco Regime up to our present days. It was during the dictatorship that translations of foreign detective fiction started to reach the country and a sense of collective imagination on the topic began to be created, influenced also by the movie adaptations that reached Spain, by the numerous pseudotranslations, and by journals like El Caso. The foreign model of detective fiction was adopted by national writers who re- created it within a new context: classic detective fiction influenced the work of Francisco García Pavón, and hardboiled detective fiction –analyzed through the works of James M. -

OHIO GOVERNOR JOHN KASICH TO PUBLISH NEW BOOK TWO PATHS: AMERICA DIVIDED OR UNITED Published by Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin’s Press on April 25, 2017 NEW YORK, NY – Tuesday, January 31, 2017 – It was announced today that Ohio Governor John Kasich will publish a new book entitled TWO PATHS: America Divided or United with the Thomas Dunne Books imprint of St. Martin’s Press on April 25, 2017. World publishing rights were acquired by Thomas Dunne, with Stephen S. Power editing, from Jenny Bent at The Bent Agency, who represented the author. The book will be available in hardcover, ebook, and audio (read by the author). As the last traditional Republican standing in the 2016 Presidential race, Governor John Kasich was the only candidate who was once a Fox News host and endorsed by The New York Times. Kasich distinguished himself by remaining above the fray as the campaign rhetoric and coverage reached unprecedented new lows, witnessing first-hand how “the tone and tenor of our political discourse has become deeply troubling – and hardly Presidential.” Kasich’s goal in writing the book is to consider how these strange times have come about, and how to set things right. In TWO PATHS, Kasich recounts his political career, how faith guides his personal and political life, and considers lessons from the historic Presidential campaign. He takes aim at news media bias and the constant race for ratings, gerrymandering and redrawing of voting districts, ramifications of living in a post-truth environment, the proliferation of “fake news,” and the danger of political leaders telling constituents only what they want to hear whether it’s true or not. -

The Haràbofleâ Outsider fs a study of American hardboiled writing as an eristentialist literature. Authors examhed include Carroll John Daly, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, James W. Cain, Corne11 Wmlrich, Jim Thompson and David Goodie. Work produced by theee authors is examined in the light of French existential thought as expounded primarily by Jean-Paul Sartre. The pre-eminent popularity of hardboiled fiction was contemporary with the height of existentialism during an historical period from the late 1920s to the 1950s. -

ABSTRACT This paper traces the continuity of Edgar Allan Poe’s archetypal “creative and resolvent” detective from the nineteenth century’s classical detective fiction into the twentieth century’s hardboiled detective fiction. Specifically, this paper asserts that the duality first suggested by Poe in “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” (1841) did not only define classical era detectives, but it also persisted into the radically different hardboiled era of American detective fiction. First, this paper examines the cultural contexts of each era and establishes the shared links between the resolvent—or analytical—traits and creative—or abstract and Romantic—traits of classical era detectives C. Auguste Dupin and Sherlock Holmes and hardboiled detectives Race Williams, the Continental Op, Sam Spade, and Philip Marlowe. This paper claims that the analytical skills of classical detectives are similarly present in hardboiled detectives, and that the creative eccentricity and melancholy of the classical detectives manifests as personal codes of Romantic honor in the hardboiled era. -

In a July 25 memo to authors, illustrators and agents, Macmillan Publishers stated that they believe library lending has had a negative impact on sales. After testing an embargo period with one of their publishers, Macmillan decided to apply this new process to all ebooks published by imprints that fall under the Macmillan Publishing corporation. In fulfillment of its role to offer equal and open access to information, ebooks have played a critical role in the library’s ability to serve all communities, especially patrons with visual and other disabilities.
