Voyager Estate | 2008

The Winery

Voyager Estate is in Western Australia’s coastal Margaret River region. Established in 1978 by Michael Wright and still owned and operated by the family, Voyager Estate is undoubtedly one of the benchmarks in this world- class region.

The Region

The small Margaret River is a moderate climate that is characterised by its proximity to the Indian Ocean that surrounds it on three sides. Often compared to Bordeaux but with sunshine, Margaret River produces some of the finest Semillon Sauvignons, Chardonnays and Cabernet blends.

The Year

2008 commenced with a challenging spring followed by a warm, dry and sunny growing season. Steady ripening, excellent vintage.

The Fruit

86% Cabernet, 12% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot. Predominately sourced from the 29 year old Estate Block and the younger Block 12 vineyard. Fruit was hand harvested from March 28th to April 5th.

The Winemaking

Fruit was de-stemmed but not crushed in order to preserve whole berries for aromatic lift. Large open top fermenters were used, with hand plunging daily, with the juice spending extended time on skins. The wine spent 18 months in French oak (50% new, 50% two year old) and bottled in February 2010.

The Juice

Perfume of blackberry, currant, cassis, violets, dark chocolate and herbs.

Palate is elegant and fine, showing sweet dark fruits, warm mocha tones and fresh garden herbs. Rich, concentrated but with a light framework and long velvet like tannins. A beautifully balanced and elegant Cabernet Sauvignon.

13.6% abv with acidity at 6.4 grams per litre.
