Sally Morrison's biography - nine years in the writing - should put him in the clearing once and for all. His work was more sophisticated, more cerebral and more finely crafted than many of his peers who have ascended the auction room ladder, so it seems completely timely that a heartfelt, finely tuned and exhaustively researched biography by novelist and scientist Sally Morrison should make its appearance now. Morrison had attracted the attention of Patrick White years earlier with her novel Who's Taking You to the Dance? and in 1995 she won the National Book Council's Banjo Award with Mad Meg. Both books exhibit a degree of psychological penetration, which makes her biography of Pugh compelling reading. Morrison became friends with Pugh in his later years; and when he died in 1990, she waited ten years before undertaking a detailed and frank account of his life. Pugh, however, does not appear to be a particularly likeable character. -

Those are appropriate enough as descriptive terms; they do capture something of the aesthetic tone of the work. But for the artist himself, different words are required. Words like ‘diligent’ or ‘adventurous’; the very antithesis of the languid and agoraphobic artists of the fin-de-siècle period. Brent Harris is an artist who has often worked programmatically, using a sequence of paintings or prints to systematically hunt down an idea, a form or a quality of his medium. With this persistence comes a willingness to learn, to explore, to renew. What this exhibition amounts to, I think, is a testimony to the hard graft of art. Behind the pristine refinement of the works displayed are accumulated layers not only of studio craft but of reading, reflection, looking and travelling. Surprising new works combine artistic ambition with a willingness to accept the challenge of innovative processes. Familiar works reclaim their subtlety as the resonances threading through an accumulated oeuvre become apparent. The job of being an artist, and the rewards that this offers us as viewers, are both writ large. -

THE ORMOND CHAIR OF MUSIC AND THE CONSERVATORIUM The Chair of Music was founded in the University of Melbourne by the generous endowment (f20,000) of the late Mr. Francis Ormond in 1891. Three years later, in 1894, the Conservatorium was established. THE BUILDING The present building consists of twenty teaching rooms, a finе lecture hall, concert hall (known as Melba Hall), Director's room, administrative offices, library, social room and staff and students' rooms. AIM OF THE CONSERVATORIUM The chief aim of the Conservatorium is co provide a general course of musical education, while provision is also made for specialization in any particular subject. In the absence, on leave, of Mr. Henri Touzeau, Mr. Keith Humble has directed the orchestra. A programme was provided for the National Council of Women at the Melbourne Town Hall, and by the end of the year three concerts will have been given in Melba Hall. At two of these concerts a number of students will have had an opportunity to appear as soloists with the orchestra. -

Australian universities have been heavily criticised in these pages, and some specific examples of where things have gone wrong have been reported in detail. Not everyone sees these events negatively, how- ever. Professor Don Aitken, until recently Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canberra, said: I remain optimistic about the future of higher education in Australia. … To regard what is happening to universities in Australia as simply the work of misguided politicians or managers is abysmally paro- chial.1 Are the authors in this book concentrating too much on the damage that has been done? Is a greater good emerging that we have missed so far? As was pointed out in the Preface, globalisation is upon us; it is less than helpful to command, Canute-like, the tide to retreat. Rather the wise thing would be to acknowledge what we cannot change, and focus on what we can change. At the least, we need a resolution that is more academically acceptable than the one we have. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, Professor Stuart Sutherland, in commenting on parallel changes in Britain, put it this way: 185 The subversion of Australian universities The most critical task for universities is to recreate a sense of our own worth by refashioning our understanding of our identity — our under- standing of what the word “university” means. …The trouble is that in the process of expansion and diversification, the place that universities had at the table has not simply been redefined; it has been lost.2 Australian universities too have lost their place at the table. -

It asks how and why, at that time in South Australian history, the state’s parliament was willing and able to relax controls over behaviours that were traditionally considered immoral. -

Abstract The development of modern European scholarship and art, more marked.in Austria and Germany, had produced by the early part of the twentieth century challenging innovations in art and the principles of art historical scholarship. Art history, in its quest to explicate the connections between art and mind, time and place, became a discipline that combined or connected various fields of enquiry to other historical moments. Hitler's accession to power in 1933 resulted in a major diaspora of Europeans, mostly German Jews, and one of the most critical dispersions of intellectuals ever recorded. Their relocation to many western countries, including Australia, resulted in major intellectual and cultural developments within those societies. By investigating selected case studies, this research illuminates the important contributions made by these individuals to the academic and cultural studies in Melbourne. Dr Ursula Hoff, a German art scholar, exiled from Hamburg, arrived in Melbourne via London in December 1939. After a brief period as a secretary at the Women's College at the University of Melbourne, she became the first qualified art historian to work within an Australian state gallery as well as one of the foundation lecturers at the School of Fine Arts at the University of Melbourne. While her legacy at the National Gallery of Victoria rests mostly on an internationally recognised Department of Prints and Drawings, her concern and dedication extended to the Gallery as a whole. -

Signature of Student: Date: 12 August 2014 3 INTRODUCTION Alf Pollard’s contribution to the business history of Australia is as yet unwritten—both as a biography of the man himself, but also his singular, albeit often quiet, achievements. He helped to shape the business world in which he operated and, in parallel, made outstanding contributions to Australian society. Cultural deprivation theory tells us that people who are working class have themselves to blame for the failure of their children in education1 and Alf was certainly from a low socio-economic, indeed extremely poor, family. He fitted such a child to the letter, although he later turned out to be an outstanding counter-example despite having no ‘built-in’ advantage as he not been socialised in a dominant wealthy culture.
