Course description

Learn the art of quill making and calligraphy with tutor, Patricia Lovett MBE. Taking inspiration from the script on display in Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms: Art, Word, War, this one day course will enable you to write Uncial script using your own cut quill.

Saturday

After briefly visiting Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms: Art, Word War, you will learn the basic principles of calligraphy using exemplars and worksheets, which you can take home for further practice. In the afternoon you will learn how to cut your own quill and the techniques for writing with it, how to prepare (calfskin) for writing, and then use your quill to write your own name on vellum in Uncial script to take home.

Tutor

Patricia Lovett MBE is a world-renowned scribe and illuminator who received a National Honour for calligraphy and heritage crafts. She creates artworks on vellum, using gold, colour and quills. She has written extensively on calligraphy and illumination, including The Art and History of Calligraphy, published by the . Patricia co-curated the Calligraphy Today (2012-13) exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum, and teaches at a range of institutions including Harvard University and the University of London.

None required. A willingness to participate in group discussion and activities will help you get the most from this course.

Facilities and refreshments All materials provided. Please note that the Learning Centre will open to participants 15 minutes before the stated course start time. Tea and coffee will be provided the start of the session. Lunch is not provided.
