Wycliffe is a British television series, based on W. Burley 's novels Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death Detective Superintendent Charles Wycliffe. The series was filmed in Cornwallwith a production office in Truro. Music for the series was composed by Nigel Hesswho was nominated for the Royal Television Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death award for the best original television theme in Each episode deals with a murder investigation. In the early series, the stories are adapted from Burley's books and are in classic whodunit style, often with quirky characters and plot elements. In later seasons, the tone becomes more naturalistic and there is more emphasis on internal politics within the police. The setting in Cornwall is an important feature of the series, providing both picturesque landscapes and glimpses into the local way of life. Many characters work in the tourist industry. Some of the problems of the county, such as the struggling fishing industrylong-term unemployment, and prejudice against new age travellersare shown in various episodes. Wycliffe and his team are responsible for a large geographical area and often have to spend time away from home during an investigation. This can cause problems for Wycliffe, who is shown as a contented family man married to a teacher Lynn Farleigh and with two teenage children. It also makes it difficult for Lane and Kersey, who are both single, to form relationships outside work. Wycliffe's beat appears to cover mainly central and west Cornwall. There are frequent references to certain major towns, including TruroNewquayCamborne and Penzance these places were also used as locations. Other towns in the same area, such as FalmouthSt Austell or St IvesWycliffe and the Cycle of Death less frequently, although Falmouth probably provided some of the backgrounds to scenes in " Time Out ", the only episode for which a fictional Cornish town "Eastgate" was invented, complete with a red-light district. Bodmin actually mainly Bodmin Moor features strongly in one episode, " Number of the Beast ", which is about the so-called Beast of Bodmin said to be a big cat. In the final episode, " Land's End ", Wycliffe refers to Wadebridgenear Bodmin, as being on "the other side of the county". Devon and Cornwall Police is no longer organised into Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death. The Major Crime Investigation Team in Cornwall, which would presumably be headed by Wycliffe, was actually based at Newquay during the period Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death which the series was made, but Wycliffe's divisional headquarters appears to be in the Camborne area. Wycliffe's hobby of playing jazz piano reflects Jack Shepherd's interest in music. Shepherd did all his own piano playing in the series. Helen Masters became pregnant at the beginning of Series 5 and storylines were adjusted so that her character, D. Lane later D. Lanewas also pregnant. The police force in the series is based on the [Devon and Cornwall Police]], but is called the South West Constabulary. The series shows detective and forensic work in a reasonably accurate way, but the emphasis is more on the human stories surrounding the murders. Wycliffe is a quiet, thoughtful man, a skilled observer of people and an astute interviewer, and these qualities enable him to solve the crimes. Internal police politics provide slow-burning story arcs in the later series. Wycliffe constantly has to deal with red tapebudget restraints and a blustering, image-obsessed Deputy Chief Constable. Lane is offered promotion, though she later realises that she is being used to fulfil sexual equality quotas in the force rather than being judged on her ability. There are tensions between her and Kersey, though they have previously been close. Kersey is the subject of an internal investigation and is forced to reconsider his career after being accused of causing the death of a prisoner in custody. Wycliffe's frequent meetings with the Deputy Chief Constable, Stevens, are slightly odd. In real life there would almost certainly be a Detective Chief Superintendent as the Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death of CID throughout the force, who would report to one of a series of Assistant Chief Constables, each with a particular responsibility such as operations or personnel. The Deputy Chief Constable is normally too senior to be troubled with operational details unless a major crisis occurs. It is also strange that Stevens is so often on hand and even appears to have an office in the Divisional HQ. Such a postholder would really be based at the police service's headquarters. Wycliffe ran for five series from 24 July to 5 Julyand included a pilot episode originally shown on 7 August and a Christmas special shown between the fourth and fifth series. November 18, [2] Via Vision Entertainment. The pilot episode was originally aired one year earlier than the commissioned first series, in the summer of The cast of the pilot differs from that used for the commissioned series; Jack Shepherd plays Wycliffe both in the pilot and in the commissioned series. The third series of Wycliffe was originally aired on ITV in the summer of There was a short hiatus in the third series due to ITV's coverage of the Euro '96 football tournament. The final series of Wycliffe was originally aired on ITV in the summer of The Christmas special was originally aired about five months earlier in December During the filming of this series Jimmy Yuill fell ill with meningitis. While he was in hospital the production company, HTV, terminated his contract. Though he made a full recovery HTV then refused to allow him to return to the programme, apparently for insurance reasons. This caused Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death ill-feeling and Jack Shepherd made it clear that he did not wish to continue as Wycliffe. ITV did not recommission the programme. The Complete Collection DVD containing five individual seasons in a slip box was released first, followed later in the same year by a new collection slimmed down to a single case with new artwork. Even though I regularly watched the Jack Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death outing as Wycliffe back in the day and still to be found on ITV3 these days this is the first of the actual novels I have read. Another charity pick up and an enjoyable sunny Sunday afternoon Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death the tennis was a let down, the sun was out, sitting in the garden it simply had to be. This time Wycliffe is called to Penzance to investigate the murder of bookseller Matthew Glynn whose extended family still live with him. Familial relationships d Even though I regularly watched the Jack Shepherd outing as Wycliffe back in the day and still to be found on ITV3 these days this is the first of the actual novels I have read. Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death relationships dominate this: a domineering maternal figure, warring siblings and an apparently promiscuous woman whose disappearance some seventeen years previously holds the key to the mystery. Engaging overall although the ending is possibly one of the least satisfying I think I have ever read. To be Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death, Burley doesn't fall into the traditional trap of tying up all lose ends but what he does give us leaves an air of confusion rather than acceptance. Dec 09, Alison C rated it it was ok. I had the feeling that Burley just sort of ran out of steam toward the end, such that the solution to the mystery was, Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death, quite dull. A pity. Apr 01, Gillian Van rated it liked Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death Recommends it for: any fan of the Wycliffe television series. A friend passed on a second hand copy from a free book exchange. Intriguingly, there was a label insert informing it was a free gift from Laura Brett 'bestselling author of The Mystery of an Old Murder' and requesting Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death reader buy her book so she can continue offering free books to continue reading. I could not find out if this is an ongoing project though. The Wycliffe was an Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death read if a tad formulaic. Would read another book in this series if given to me but probably would not buy unless A friend passed on Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death second hand copy from a free book exchange. Would read another book in this series if given to me but probably would not buy unless there was another attractive deal! View 1 comment. Apr 12, Kacper Nedza rated it it was amazing. Burley is consistently very good and inconsistently excellent--this is one of the excellent ones, in terms of richness of character and the emotional resonance. The women in particular are beautifully conveyed. As a detective plot, it's fairly workaday but Burley gives it remarkable distinction. Aug 07, Myshelle rated it it was amazing. I was really amazed at the finish of this book. Wycliffe is an old crime series and great for a quick read. The ending seemed a bit odd. Just sort of ended and I didn't feel I'd really got my head around what was supposed to have happened. Aug 15, Book collector rated it it was amazing Shelves: w-j-burley. A review of the series and author rather than an individual review of the books. I stumbled over the books and decided to try them as I vaguely recalled the TV series based on them. I remember liking the Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death show and indeed have seen and enjoyed it again since reading the books. Wycliffe is a good character. Happily married a rarity in detective books these days given to moods but brilliant. A regular cast of detectives work with him throughout the books and it's nice to see the attitudes change A review of the series and author rather than an individual review of the books. A regular cast of detectives work with him throughout the books and it's nice to see the attitudes change as time goes on with more female detective characters appearing. The books start in and ended in with the authors death leaving an unfinished story which has never been published, although how much was completed I don't know. I'd recommend reading the books in order as the characters develop throughout the series. I read them out of order slightly as that's how I bought them. In some ways it wasn't bad the first two or so books are finding their feet. Overall I enjoyed the all of books though. They all have strong plots with good central mysteries. They are police procedurals in style. A murder is committed. The police arrive and set up an incident room and Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death investigating. The main characters are combined with well written book specific characters some of whom return in other books. The cornish locations add colour to the books and given wycliffe's penchant for musing wandering offer a good backdrop. The books are well written, with good characters and good stories. I'm so pleased I tried them on a spur on the moment. I'll happily read these books again and I'd recommend them if you like good police procedural stories. It's all secrets and lies! All of the elements which W. Burley excels at are present: a family living on top of each other in a big house, evocations of the Cornish landscape and Wycliffe's cerebrational walks Burley uses that word a lot in this book: either he had a thesaurus to hand or I missed it in previous volumes - it's a good word though! In part then, the book owes its success to the author's conservatism: by the time "Secrets and lies! In part then, the book owes its success to the author's conservatism: by the time he wrote this he'd been a published author for more than twenty years and in this work he sticks to his strengths without any kind of experimentation. There's even the odd in-joke: comparing 'today's policing' published inso we're talking c. It's also effective because the plot holds together a little better than some of the other mysteries. Here, the reader is allowed to infer a good deal, but an unexplained mystery remains at the end and, without firm evidence, Wycliffe is forced to compromise. W.J. Burley Book List - FictionDB
