Saturday October 24, 2020 EFFORTS WILL BE MADE TO ASSIST TAXI OPERATORS

MINISTER of Energy, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Kerrie Symmonds is concerned about the survival of local taxi operators, especially in the current COVID-19 environment and indicated that efforts will be made to see how best to help keep the stakeholders afloat. He spoke to this yesterday morning as he announced that FundAccess and the Trust Loan Fund are both to be recapitalised. While revealing that this decision was only approved by the Cabinet on Thursday evening, he said his intention is to sit with the management of both Funds soon, to see what support can be offered to taxi operators. His remarks came as he acknowledged that this sector has been hard hit by COVID-19, as their primary customers, tourists, are few at this time. He made the comments yesterday morning during a meeting at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre to introduce over 200 locally registered taxi operators to a new app called pickUP, which is intended to provide added business for the sector. He explained that the app, which was developed by brothers David and James Hamel-Smith, will connect passengers with taxi operators A large number of taxi operators turned up for the meeting at the Lloyd Erskine who are closest in proximity to their Sandiford Centre.
