Royals Notes - Tampa Bay Rays @ Kansas City Royals - Monday, July 6, 2015 This & That DAVIS PROVING ALL-STAR WORTHY--We will find out at some point tonight whether relief Wade Davis has made his first All-Star team, but statistically there is nobody better at his trade...he worked a scoreless eighth inning yesterday to drop his already miniscule ERA to 0.25, allowing just one earned run in 36.0 innings this year...on Friday night vs. the Twins, he was the beneficiary of the walk-off win to record his fourth victory of the year and 13th since the start of 2014, making him the winningest reliever in the Major Leagues over the last two seasons...since the dawn of the 2014 season, Wade has a 13-3 record with 12 rescues and a 0.75 ERA (9 earned runs in 108.0 innings)...since June 27 of last year, Wade has been even better, going 8-1 with 12 saves, a 0.48 ERA (4 ER in 74.1 IP), a .154 opponents’ average and 11.50 strikeouts per 9.0 innings...he has now worked 118.0 consecutive innings without allowing a home run, the longest-active streak in the Major Leagues...Davis’ streak dates back to August 24, 2013, which was the date of his last start. BEEN A LONG TIME...--The Royals are off to a 2-3 start in July, which is a game better off than the 1-4 beginning to June, though the club rallied to win 14 of its final 21 games last month to finish with a 15-11 record...the successful month of June gave KC three consecutive winning months to open the year for the first time since the 1989 campaign...this year’s club started with a 15-7 month of April, followed by a 14-12 run through May...the ‘89 club went 16-8 in April, 14-13 in May and 14-12 in June, but entered July in third place in the A.L. West, two games off the pace...this year’s club opened July with a 4 1/2-game advantage over Minnesota, picking up five games in the standings during the month of June after entering a half-game back and enter tonight’s action with that same 4 1/2-game lead...in the 47-year history of the Royals, this was the fourth time the club has opened the year with three consecutive winning months, not only matching the ‘89 campaign, but also 1980 and ‘82. NICE VIEW FROM THE TOP--Tonight is the 61st day that Kansas City has either shared or stood alone atop the A.L. Central in 2015 compared to 33 such days during the course of the 2014 campaign...this year’s squad opened the season with a 7-game winning streak and the closest KC has come back to .500 has been five games at 7-2 and 8-3...dating back to July 22 of last year, the Royals have the third most wins in the Majors with 87, trailing only Washington (88) and St. Louis (89). ALL ABOARD THE CAIN TRAIN--The KC offense has hit at just a .212 clip over the last eight games, but one constant of late has been the production of newly named first time All-Star Lorenzo Cain...though hitless yesterday, it was his ninth inning leadoff walk that preceded Eric Hosmer’s game-ending double in the 3-2 victory...in his last 23 contests, LoCain has hit safely in all but four at a .357 clip (30-for-84) with 11 runs, seven doubles, three triples, two homers and 13 RBI and an OPS of 1.004...he’s also 7-for-8 in attempts in that stretch...as if that’s not enough, Lorenzo has hit .500 (11-for-22) in his last six contests, with three doubles, a triple, four runs scored and a 1.333 OPS. A WEEK WITH THE EAST--Yesterday’s win over the Twins closed out work within the Central until after the break when the Royals play four in Chicago, starting with a day/night double dip at U.S. Cellular Field on July 17 to make up an April 25 postponement...Kansas City is now 21-14 within the Central...next on the agenda is a week’s worth of games against the A.L. East starting with this 4-game vist from Tampa Bay and ending the week with a 3-gamer here against Toronto... the Royals are only 3-6 vs. the East, playing just the Yankees and BoSox to this point...KC is 13-9 vs. the West and has gone 9-4 against the after a big league best 15-5 effort against the Senior Circuit last year. H-D-H SCARCE OF LATE--Kansas City’s typical game-ending trifecta of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland have not appeared in the same contest since June 22 in Seattle...the trio has worked together in nine games this year tossing the seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively, and combining to allow two earned runs in a combined 25.2 innings for a 0.70 ERA, while walking nine and fanning 28...the opposition has hit .125 (11-for-88) in those final three innings that they have anchored in the same game. NED A ROYAL RECORD HOLDER--The 16th full-time in Royals’ history, , became the winningest skipper in franchise annals with #411 on June 18 vs. Milwaukee, passing Royals’ Hall of Famer, , who won 410 games from 1975-79, while Ned is now 419-435...Yost passed the late for the #2 spot on June 8 in Minnesota...since the All-Star break of 2013, Ned has guided the Royals to the best record in the American League at 178-133 for a .572 winning pct...already the all-time leader in games managed in Kansas City with 854, this is Ned’s second stint as a big league manager after nearly six years at the helm for Milwaukee (2003-2008), compiling a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...Yost’s 876 total wins as a big league manager rank 71st all time, three behind George Stallings for 70th, while his 1,813 games managed are tied with Stallings for 65th all-time. UNDER THE MAGIC NUMBER--For the third straight game, the Royals were held to just three runs on Sunday, but for the second time in that stretch three were enough to post a walk-off victory...when attaining at least four runs in a game, the Royals have managed a 36-5 record this year and dating back to the start of 2013, the club is a terrific 169-22 (.885)...on the flip side, when plating three or fewer tallies, KC has gone 10-28 this year and just 30-85 over the last two seasons.
