We pray that throughout this coming year we may fulfill the ideals of Freedom, Fairness, Tzedakah, Family, Study of Torah, Tikkun Olam, Courage and Faith—all of which are symbolized by the candles of our hanukkiah.

Let us pray that the message of Hanukkah will illuminate the everyday life of everyone personally, and of the society at large, for a brighter life in every respect, both materially and spiritually.

* Of Blessed Memory MELANIE JACOBSON longtime member and treasured friend of B’nai Torah Congregation, has graciously become a member of our Ner Tamid Society which was created to ensure that our synagogue continues to thrive for generations to come.

Melanie’s first encounter with B’nai Torah was when she attended a Bar Mitzvah that Rabbi Steinhardt officiated. She immediately took note of Rabbi’s sermon which she found to be both eloquent and erudite. Melanie, herself an intellect, has a passion for knowledge, a trait she inherited from her parents. They were in the travel industry and traveled extensively in a quest to learn about the world around them.

When Melanie joined B’nai Torah, she shared with Rabbi Steinhardt that she was determined to have a more substantive connection to Judaism. While as a child, she attended religious school, was in the choir, beautifully celebrated major holidays, and shared her parents ardent love of Israel, her family’s Jewish connection was more traditional and secular. As a lifelong learner, Melanie decided to prioritize a religious focus to her quest. By nature, she had an intrinsic need to connect things, and so began her next steps in her Jewish educational journey. With Rabbi Steinhardt’s guidance, she attended Melton and Hartman classes, and never looked back.

After several years of serious study, Melanie was ready to become a Bat Mitzvah. Very committed to the process, she studied relentlessly. Appropriately, Ner Tamid means eternal light, the lamp that adorns the synagogue’s prayer space. To Melanie, knowledge is light. Melanie has an esteemed and highly respected career as a litigator, judge, adjunct law professor and mediator, and yet she feels this is one of her greatest accomplishments. What she learned, and what she exemplifies, is that you can learn anything at any age. Melanie was mourning the loss of her mother and managing a demanding career while taking on this tremendous responsibility. As a trial lawyer, she focused on perfectionism and by nature did not want to disappoint - and she did not! She was touched by the outpour of support from our congregants who shared in the joy of her simcha.

This year, Melanie was asked to take on a leadership role and was thrilled to join B’nai Torah’s Board of Trustees. In an act of tremendous generosity, Melanie chose to acknowledge and celebrate the fifth anniversary of her Bat Mitzvah and a milestone birthday, while honoring her beloved mother’s memory, by supporting the synagogue during a difficult time with her Ner Tamid gift. With great appreciation for the opportunities, community, and kindness she was shown on her journey of learning, Melanie hopes others experience this same connection with B’nai Torah Congregation for years to come.

While we love seeing so many faces on Zoom services and programs, we miss the personal connections of being together at shul, so we asked you to share your thoughts and experiences regarding this unprecedented time. EIGHT DAYS B NAI TORAH OF ACTION TO CONGREGATION PROTECT OUR CLIMATE

Approximately 75% of the total warming our planet. If no action is taken to reduce these energy use and greenhouse-gas emissions produced by greenhouse gas emissions, it is predicted that by 2100 a single load of laundry come from warming the water the earth’s average temperature may rise as much as itself. Studies have shown that washing in cold water is 10 degrees Fahrenheit, and the global sea may rise by just as effective as using warm water. as much as 34 inches. If used for another purpose, that amount of oil could fuel 1.3 million cars for an entire year or power 190,000 homes. 5. Plant a tree - Trees soak up carbon dioxide, release oxygen into the air and cool down our cities. Effective landscaping can reduce your cooling bill by up to 50%. Plant trees that shade your house from sunlight during the hottest hours of the day.

6. Wash your car in a self-serve car wash - It may seem better to wash your car at home, but it is actually worse for the environment. Washing your car in the driveway causes polluted water to run into sewers, and you will likely keep the hose running too long. The best way to wash a car is at a self-serve station which uses around 12 - 18 gallons of water per vehicle, compared to up to 100 gallons at home.

7. Bring your own shopping bags - Plastic bags are incredibly destructive to the environment. They take hundreds of years to break down, contaminate soil and waterways and cause widespread marine animal deaths. Switch to reusable bags and use them regularly.

8. Learn more and learn together - Listen to a podcast, watch a documentary and read books with your family. It is extremely important to learn about and understand the science of climate change and the ways in which you and your family can help reduce your carbon footprint.

No single action will solve the global climate crisis. Yet, if we act on as many of the areas above as possible and act together, a small group of people can overcome a seemingly incomprehensible crisis. We can, as in days of old, turn this time of darkness into one of light.
