E te iwi tēnā koutou, For me, the holiday was a time of reflection and anticipation for what is to come. 2019 has arrived and brings new ambitions and goals for us to work towards this calendar year.At the end of last year we announced our new housing initiative, Te Āhuru Mōwai and have been working hard over the past few months, on the structure of this initiative as well as the policies and procedures, that will have a major impact for our whānau. It’s a big initiative and we look forward to being able to provide better homes and more jobs. Leading up to our 30 year birthday, I reflect on my time here at Te RūnangaoNgāti Toa Rangatira and some of the work we’ve accomplished. Since 1989 we have grown and developed this organisation for the Ngāti Toa Rangatira people. We have also establisheda Primary Health organisation compromising five community medical centres, Ora Toa Health Unit, Ora Toa Mauriora an addictions service and a residential Disability service. We have made many business investments, promotion of te reo and tikanga Māori and Ngāti Toa History. One of our biggest accomplishments to date has been our Treaty of Waitangi claim and the development of the post-settlement entity and its organisational structure, Toa Rangatira Trust As with every edition of Tikarohia the stories we share here also tell of Te Rūnanga oToa Rangatira’s role amongst our community. I want to wish the staff at Te RūnangaoToa Rangatira all the very best as they continue their mahi and I look forward to seeing the outcomes of our goals this year and wish everyone a wonderful 2019. Nāku nā, Tā Matiu Rei PUNA MATAURANGA

Our tamariki at Puna worked very hard last year with all the different kaupapa they were involved in.

In term 3 the kids started learning about the Environment-how to be kaitiaki of our taiao. Throughout the term they learnt about the maramataka Māori, Parakore, and gardening which resulted in the kids starting their first māra kai at Puna.To kick start this kaupapa the kids learnt to make beeswax wraps. The tamariki made some, took Māra Kai at PunaMātauranga them home and used them for the school lunches the next day, they then started mapping out their māra kai and worm farm. Along side the Puna aunties, we had lots of whānau who also came down to tautoko this kaupapa to get the māra kai and worm farm going. To date, we have harvested spring onions, lettuce, broccoli, kale, corn and strawberries.

In term 4 we held our annual kids market. What a Christina&Kristian preparing their stall for the annual tamaiti market success!Throughout the term our tamariki came up with their business plan and together with the Puna Aunties they wrote steps on how they’re going to move forward, they even came up with their own Business logos. Market day finally arrived and the weather wasn't too nice so we moved our market from Puna to the marae, in the wharekai. Our tamariki had another successful market and we cant wait for next years one.

We would like to thank Bunnings who came in Puna Aunties with the staff from Bunnings and built Puna a fence so that we can keep a close eye on our tamariki.

Earlier this month Te Reoote Kāinga had their 3rd wānanga where whānau participated in Te Reo Māori Yoga on the Friday night and a Bus Tour to local historicalsites on the Saturday. E mihi ana ki a Jase Te Patu mō te haramai ki te tautokoitō mātou kaupapa. Big mihi to Jase Te Patu who came out to take our Yoga, in te reo Māori.

Another successful year away at the Māori Basketball Nationals. All three days were busy with whānau rushing from one game to the next to support all our teams that we took away to compete. We had teams making finals, teams falling short in their semi, and some teams making big improvements throughout the week.

Our Open women went down in their semi and our U9 Kotiro team narrowly lost their playoff for 3rd & 4th 42-40. Our Tama U11, U15, U17, U19 made the finals and won. Our Tane team also made the finals but went down by 2 in the final after a tight game that was close the whole way. But with all of our teams doing so well we ended up winning the trophy we wanted, the NZ Maori Basketball overall winner - The Willie Taurima Memorial Trophy.

Congrats TOA, it’s the first time we have won the overall and again a big thank you to all our players, coaches, refs, and supporters for another awesome weekend.

SmearYour Mea riders embarked on their journey from to Wellington with a pit stop in Takapūwāhia on their way to Te Matatini ki te ao. What a beautiful day it was for the riders to ride into the medical centre where they were greeted with a pōwhiri by our Ora Toa whānau. SmearYour Mea is a campaign that encourages women to look after themselves, to go see a nurse before it’s too late. Talei, who lost her battle to cancer last June started SmearYour Mea in hopes to reach out to women about how important it is to get smears done.

Te Ururoa, former MP was a part of the crew and has been fronting this campaign along side Talei’s mother who were also present on the day. It was an awesome morning.

Riders continued to Wellington the following day in time for the Te Matatini ki te ao pōwhiri where they took Talei’s kawemate. Talei’s wish was to encourage women kaihaka to get their smear done which is what Te Ururoa and Sandy will be campaigning while attending Te Kawai Winiata with Te Ururoa Flavell and Sandy Matatini ki te Ao. Waitangi Day

Thousands came to Te Awarua o Porirua to celebrate te rā o Waitangi. Even though the weather was a bit overcast,it didn’t dampen the high spirits of those that attended.
