  • A's News Clips, Wednesday, February 22, 2011 Oakland A's Know This Much About David Dejesus
A’s News Clips, Wednesday, February 22, 2011 Oakland A's know this much about David DeJesus: He can hit By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune PHOENIX -- For a guy who appears to have a spot locked down in the A's lineup, David DeJesus' exact role is hard to define. Is he a rally-starter who best fits near the top of the lineup, or a run producer who will earn his paycheck clearing the bases? All that's known is DeJesus, obtained via trade from Kansas City in November, is targeted for right field. If the A's wind up showing improvement offensively this season, figure DeJesus will be central to the effort in one way or another. "He's an all-around hitter who uses the whole field," A's manager Bob Geren said. "There are guys that hit more home runs, but when you put the numbers together, he's one of the best hitters in baseball." A .289 career hitter over seven-plus major league seasons, DeJesus, 31, has collected as many as 73 RBIs in a year (2008) and scored as many as 101 runs (2007). One notable stat for fans tired of watching A's hitters make the slow walk back to the dugout: DeJesus led the majors last season with a .287 average in two-strike counts. There's a strong chance he'll wind up as the No. 3 hitter by default -- sandwiched between table-setters Coco Crisp and Daric Barton and sluggers Josh Willingham and Hideki Matsui. Therein lies the problem that exists for the A's in the eyes of some.

  • A's News Clips, Friday, June 25, 2010 Oakland A's Reliever Michael
A’s News Clips, Friday, June 25, 2010 Oakland A's reliever Michael Wuertz's struggles are puzzlement By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune Observe Michael Wuertz in the A's clubhouse, and there's little that suggests how rough this season has been on him. The soft-spoken reliever generally keeps to himself at his locker, much as he did last season when he was mowing down American League hitters with regularity. He isn't fooling the opposition nearly as much in 2010, and without much prodding, Wuertz opens up about his frustration. "I've never struggled like this before," he said before Wednesday's A's loss against the Cincinnati Reds. "It's been hard mentally, but it's one of those things you've got to forget about." It's easy to point to the A's hitting woes for why they have lost ground rapidly in the American League West. Long-term injuries to starting pitchers Brett Anderson and Justin Duchscherer haven't helped. But the A's normally trusty bullpen also has shown vulnerability, posting a 2-6 record with a 4.97 ERA in June. Wuertz's struggles stand out if only because he was so dominant last year, his first season with Oakland. As the setup man for closer Andrew Bailey, Wuertz led AL relievers with 102 strikeouts. He averaged 11.67 strikeouts per nine innings, the second-highest rate by a reliever in Oakland history, and held opponents to a .188 batting average. This season has told a different story. After missing the first month with right shoulder tendinitis, Wuertz has posted a 7.11 ERA in 17 games heading into tonight's series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

(Burchfield) Daily Transactions 1 Most likely Detroit Tiger to be traded? Probably J.D. Martinez October 20, 2016 By Anthony Fenech/ Detroit Free Press The Detroit Tigers aren’t in a position to spend more money. General manager Al Avila said as much on Tuesday afternoon, saying with certainty the team would not be a big player in the free agent market. Avila wants the team to get younger. He wants more financial flexibility. And this off-season, he will approach the trade market with a number of high-priced, uber-productive chips, none more likely to get moved – if a move is made – than rightfielder J.D. Martinez. Martinez is scheduled to hit free agency after the 2017 season. He is due $11.75 million. “I don’t foresee any talks of a long-term contract at this point,” Avila said. “In saying that, we’re going to keep an open mind in what possibilities come across this winter, this coming summer. I’m not going to rule out that we wouldn’t consider a long-term deal, but sitting here today, we’re not thinking that way right now.

SEATTLE MARINERS NEWS CLIPS April 8, 2010 Originally published April 7, 2010 at 10:13 PM | Page modified April 7, 2010 at 11:51 PM Mariners bullpen falters in 6-5 loss to Oakland Oakland's Kurt Suzuki drilled a deep fly ball past the glove of Milton Bradley at the left-field wall in the ninth inning, handing reliever Mark Lowe and the Mariners a 6-5 walkoff loss. By Geoff Baker Seattle Times staff reporter OAKLAND, Calif. - The realities of a six-man bullpen began hitting the Mariners about as hard as their opponent was by the time the fifth inning rolled around. It was clear by then that Seattle starter Ryan Rowland-Smith would have to scratch and claw just to make it through the minimum five innings his team desperately needed Wednesday night. After that, it was Russian roulette time, as the Mariners played a guessing game with their limited relief corps, squeezing every last pitch they could out of some arms. But they couldn't get the job completely done as Kurt Suzuki drilled a deep fly ball past the glove of Milton Bradley at the left-field wall in the ninth inning, handing reliever Mark Lowe and the Mariners a 6-5 walkoff loss. After the game, manager Don Wakamatsu suggested the team would have to call up another bullpen arm if a similar long-relief scenario occurs in Thursday's series finale. "We can't keep going like this," Wakamatsu said. The second walkoff defeat in two nights for the Mariners, in front of 18,194 at the Coliseum, has them crossing their fingers that starters Doug Fister and Jason Vargas don't implode these next two days.

  • Major League Baseball's I-Team
Major League Baseball’s I-Team The I-Team is composed of players whose names contain enough unique letters to spell the team(s) for which they played. To select the team, the all-time roster for each franchise was compared to both its current name as well as the one in use when each player was a member of the team. For example, a member of the Dodgers franchise would be compared to both that moniker (regardless of the years when they played) as well as alternate names, such as the Robins, Superbas, Bridegrooms, etc., if they played during seasons when those other identities were used. However, if a franchise relocated and changed its name, the rosters would only be compared to the team name used when each respective player was a member. Using another illustration, those who played for the Senators from 1901 to 1960 were not compared to the Twins name, and vice versa. Finally, the most common name for each player was used (as determined by baseball- reference.com’s database). For example, Whitey Ford was used, not Edward Ford. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).
