August 2018 | Page 2 IDCTA President’s PERSPECTIVE By Molly Fine Congratulations to all IDCTA Summer Kickoff show and IDCTA Summer Dressage show participants and winners! It was a great show weekend, and many were very successful in their scores and class placings. We will have complete results and photos in a future issue of the Scribe. A Lilo Fore clinic at Silverwood was held on June 25th and 26th, immediately following the shows. Lilo is an insightful clinician who utilized her considerable skills as she worked with each horse and rider combination. She evaluated each rider to determine what to focus on in their lesson. She then identified exercises to help each rider reach his or her goals for the clinic. Lilo asked each rider what they would like to work on, then added her observations during the warm up. She is a master at finding just the right exercises for a rider and horse. Her initial focus was on connection and impulsion, and each lesson progressed from there. All riders had a great time, and it was a learning experience for all, as well. We thank Lilo for finding the time to visit us here in Illinois. I want to thank all of you who sponsored classes at the show. Your sponsorship dollars allowed us to provide benefits to our competitors and volunteers. I want to thank the judges and officials who were part on the show, the vendors who attended the show, and of course, our volunteers. Without all of you we would not have had such a success- ful show – thank you again! Recently, we have had difficulty filling clinics, and need your input to be sure we are bringing in the right people at the right price point for your training goals and pocketbook. We will be sending out a questionnaire on this subject; please fill it out when you receive it so we can better serve you. I am looking forward to reporting the show results in the next issue. Until then, the best to you in this competition year, and Happy Riding!

IDCTA August 2018 | Page 9 Lilo Fore Clinic By Beth Gagliardi | Photos by Stephanie Radloff Ever have one of those days where you feel like, no matter what you do, the outcome just doesn’t seem to change? That pretty much sums up my first ride with Lilo Fore. For this clinic, I chose to ride one of my train- ing horses, Sterling, a 10-year-old, 18 hand Oldenburg gelding, owned by Kristine Currier. Sterling and I have been working together for a few years, and are currently competing at 3rd level. We have had a successful show record through 3rd level, along with multiple Regional and National awards. What could go wrong, right? I was so excited to get a chance to ride with Lilo, as she has always been a fair but tough judge, but now it seemed as though my first lesson with her was going downhill quickly! Sterling and I seemed to have differing ideas on what a dressage horse should look like. I was stuck on the dreaded 20-meter circle, unable to get him to stretch forward and down, or even to go on the bit, for that matter. It felt like I was stuck in a nightmare, dis- appointing Lilo and embarrassing myself. Having already watched some wonderful moments by Sara Veras and Flori, my lesson was starting to feel as though I wasn’t going to get anything accomplished.

After no real success in making a difference with Sterling, and riding out of desperation, trying to get anything to work (those were Lilo’s exact words), she finally had us working lateral movements to help with his relaxation and to unlock his back and jaw. We did shoulder-in, travers, and half-pass… then to my surprise, a compliment from Lilo! She remarked on my knowledge of how to correctly ride the angle and bend in those movements, and finally gave me the inspiration I needed. Now I wasn’t feeling like such a failure! There were moments within the lesson where I was able to get some good critique on things I didn’t realize I was doing with my hands; i.e. crossing the inside rein over the neck, raising one hand higher than the other, etc. But the majority of the first day really was disap- pointing, since I wasn’t able to do the simplest thing, such as getting my horse to stretch to contact, which is, ironically, my strong point. I was hopeful that it was just Sterling’s typical behavior -- unpredictable one day and astonishing the next. But I had to stay positive, or so I kept telling myself. To keep my mind off the sinking feeling I had for my second lesson, I sat and watched the lessons of Lydia Knurek and Sarah Veras. It was lovely watching the stride of Geshe grow as a result of the exercises Lilo had them working on. They did forward shoulder-in to medium trots on the short side.

continued on page 11

August 2018 | Page 10 IDCTA Lilo Fore Clinic continued from page 10 The horse learned to move into the bit and discover its balance in the forwardness of both the shoulder-ins, which drastically improved the elevation of the mediums. Sarah and Flori worked on learning how to move off the leg without barging into the contact. The word “Abstoben” was used, where the horse moves into and bounces back off the bit; the word liter- ally translates to “repel.” There was a noticeable difference in the quality of his movement when her horse would reach, bounce away, and not lean into the bit. After watching these rides, I was feeling inspired; I could do this! Day two we rode in the snaffle, because day one in the double bridle felt like a train wreck. I made sure I was fully warmed up; he was stretching into contact, and we entered the indoor with high hopes of a different outcome. Our warm up was slightly better than the previous day, and we were able to move quickly to where we left off the day before. We worked exercises of trot half circles and half-passes, focusing on keeping the connection, not just on the bent line, but also on the long side. Though we were still having issues with self-carriage and connection, we performed an exercise I was familiar with, but added an additional

component of turn on the haunches at the end: Working on the 20-meter circle at the walk, bringing the nose to the inside so the horse yields more sideways on four tracks, similar to the hand of a clock but with the horse’s nose to the middle of the circle. It is a wonderful exercise to get the horse to think about placement of their legs, encourage stepping into the contact through pelvic tilt, and to raise the shoulders up. Adding the turn on the haunches to the new direction then trotting off really helped with engagement, self-carriage, and connection to the outside rein. Our canter work focused on forward and back within the gait, and transitions in and out of the walk. With canter being both my and Sterling’s favorite gait, these exercises improved his throughness over his topline, his sit, and self-carriage. Since I was the last ride of the day, I felt I had cleared the arena of all spectators and had Lilo all to myself. I really enjoyed getting a chance to work with her, even though I felt at times that the ride was frustrating for all of us. Since this was first time she had worked with us, and not having the rides that I would have wanted, it is hard to come away from this experience and say it was everything I continued on page 11

August 2018 | Page 16 IDCTA IDCTA Grant Program

The IDCTA Board of Directors has updated our Grant Program for our membership. We are very excited about this program and hope that more IDCTA members begin sending in applications for upcoming clinics, whether IDCTA, USEA, USDF or USEF sanctioned.

As always, the funds must be used for tuition only. IDCTA members can qualify every year. To qualify for a grant, clinics must be with trainers farther than 100 miles from the Chicagoland area. The clinics must be produced by IDCTA, USEA, USDF, USEF or must be an approved clinic. In return, IDCTA asks that the recipient of the grant write a detailed article about the clinic for the next issue of the Scribe. The article should be a minimum of one typed page and may include photographs (please provide photographer credit).

Other qualifications are as follows: An applicant must be a member in good standing of IDCTA for a minimum of six months at the time the clinic is to be held. An application and copy of the clinic entry must be submitted a minimum of 60 days prior to the opening date of the clinic. This will allow the Board of Directors enough time to review and vote on the applicant's request at the next board meeting.

One grant per clinic may be awarded. Not every qualified clinic will be awarded a grant. The two main factors that will be considered when awarding grants are the following: IDCTA volunteer hours totaling a minimum of 5 in the past calendar year and each applicant’s past riding experience without regard for number of shows entered or success in the show ring.

The amount funded by IDCTA per clinic is $200‐$400, or the cost of the clinic tuition, whichever is less, and will be voted on by the board. The grant funds may only be used for the clinic the applicant anticipates participating in as a rider, and not an auditor. Funds may not be used for stabling, hauling or other associated expenses, other than the cost of the clinic tuition. Grant funding may vary each year depending on the amount available and number of qualified applicants, and will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Funds not used in a given year will be rolled over to the next year.

In cases where the grant recipient does not participate in the requested clinic or an article is not submitted within a month of participating in the clinic, the funds granted will not be sent out and will be reallocated back. This will allow the money to be used for another applicant.

All grant applicants will be notified of the decision by phone or email after the board has voted. Checks will be mailed to the applicant only after the Scribe article has been received.
