  • But Why: a Podcast for Curious Kids the Kratts Take on Wild Animal
But Why: A Podcast for Curious Kids The Kratts Take On Wild Animal Adventures April 21, 2017 [00:00:20] [Jane Lindholm] This is But Why, a podcast for curious kids, from Vermont Public Radio. I'm Jane Lindholm. Today we're going to bring you a special episode in-between our regularly scheduled shows. When I'm not working on But Why, I have a regular job making a radio show for VPR. [00:00:39] [Jane Lindholm]. It's called Vermont Edition, and on that show I interview all kinds of people who have connections to Vermont and New England. We talk about politics, breaking news, arts, culture, sports and anything else you can think of. The other day, I got to talk with two brothers who I thought you might enjoy hearing from. Chris and Martin Kratt are better known together as the Kratts. They have spent the last 20 years making educational TV shows for kids that introduce you to all kinds of animals around the world. The show you might see these days is called Wild Kratts and it's a PBS kids show. They've also done shows called Zoboomafoo, Kratts’ Creatures and Be the Creature. Martin and Chris spent a lot of their summer time as boys in a place in Vermont called the Northeast Kingdom. It's a very rural and still kind of wild part of the state up near the Canadian border. So we're going to play you my interview with them in this special episode; and they answered a lot of questions from kids who called in.

  • FALLEN MASTERS by MAURIE ALIOFF by Exorcist—Mania, the Wicker Man Tanked at the Box Office
The Cinar story began with a horror movie. Soon after meeting for the first time in New Orleans in the early 1970s, company founders Micheline Charest and Ron Weinberg happened to see the now legendary British picture, The Wicker Man. Impressed by the film's strange power, the two movie lovers also saw an opportunity in it. Written by Anthony Shaffer (Sleuth, Frenzy), and directed by one—shot wonder Robin Hardy, The Wicker Man cooks up a delirious alternate reality that feels like it was made under the influence of a witch's spell. The story focuses on a police investigator (Edward Woodward), who travels to a remote Scottish island where he discovers that the local people, among them an aris- tocrat played by Christopher Lee, are devo- tees of a neo—pagan cult. The oddly named Sergeant Howie, a strictly orthodox Christian who intends to remain a virgin until his wedding night, is horrified by the island's un—Christian hedonism. Released in England on a double bill with Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now, and swamped FALLEN MASTERS BY MAURIE ALIOFF by Exorcist—mania, The Wicker Man tanked at the box office. Charest and Weinberg picked up the rights from Warner Bros., stashed a print in their car trunk and travelled the midnight—movie circuit. The Quebecoise (Charest) and the New Yorker (Weinberg) helped turn a unique film into a cult item and for their efforts netted about $250,000. Ironically, the couple's even- tual rise and fall, from hugely successful producers and distributors of wholesome children's shows to industry outcasts accused of fraud, originated with a story about moral righteousness destroyed by amoral devotion to the material world.

  • 2 a Quotation of Normality – the Family Myth 3 'C'mon Mum, Monday
Notes 2 A Quotation of Normality – The Family Myth 1 . A less obvious antecedent that The Simpsons benefitted directly and indirectly from was Hanna-Barbera’s Wait ‘til Your Father Gets Home (NBC 1972–1974). This was an attempt to exploit the ratings successes of Norman Lear’s stable of grittier 1970s’ US sitcoms, but as a stepping stone it is entirely noteworthy through its prioritisation of the suburban narrative over the fantastical (i.e., shows like The Flintstones , The Jetsons et al.). 2 . Nelvana was renowned for producing well-regarded production-line chil- dren’s animation throughout the 1980s. It was extended from the 1960s studio Laff-Arts, and formed in 1971 by Michael Hirsh, Patrick Loubert and Clive Smith. Its success was built on a portfolio of highly commercial TV animated work that did not conform to a ‘house-style’ and allowed for more creative practice in television and feature projects (Mazurkewich, 1999, pp. 104–115). 3 . The NBC US version recast Feeble with the voice of The Simpsons regular Hank Azaria, and the emphasis shifted to an American living in England. The show was pulled off the schedules after only three episodes for failing to connect with audiences (Bermam, 1999, para 3). 4 . Aardman’s Lab Animals (2002), planned originally for ITV, sought to make an ironic juxtaposition between the mistreatment of animals as material for scientific experiment and the direct commentary from the animals them- selves, which defines the show. It was quickly assessed as unsuitable for the family slot that it was intended for (Lane, 2003 p.

  • NHPTV Ready to Learn Enhance Learning with the Learning Triangle
Enhance Learning with the Learning Triangle We all have different learning styles: Visual (what we see) Auditory (what we hear) Tactile/kinesthetic (what we feel or do) The VIEW-READ-DO Learning Triangle combines all three by using related video, books, and activities about any theme or subject. The first step is to videotape children’s programs so that you can: preview; show at your convenience; watch over and over; and use as an effective teaching and learning tool by being able to cue, pause or stop, fast forward and rewind the tape. You can show specific short segments, discuss with children what they see, have them predict what might come next, explain new vocabulary words, and relate to a child’s own experiences. Visit www.nhptv.org/programs.schedule.asp for program schedule and a brief description of episode content and focus. Then, find age-appropriate books to read aloud and plan activites for children to do--draw pictures, act out or retell the story, projects, field trips. Add the Learning Triangle to your teaching toolbox.
