RULES: Competition will be conducted in accordance with guidelines contained it the ISI Handbook along with the 2016 Rule Revisions. All changes and revisions in the 2016 Edition of the Skaters and Coaches Handbook will apply.

1. All routines must start from a stationary position. All programs will be timed with the start of any movement. There is a ten (10) second leeway on all programs except for the Solo Compulsories, where the time limit is 1.00 minute maximum.

2. There will be a short warm-up before each event. For the safety of all skaters, there are ABSOLUTELY NO BACKWARD SPIRALS PERMITTED ON WARM-UP. Coaches, PLEASE be sure to notify and remind your skaters of this rule, for the safety of all competitors.

3. Pre-Alpha, Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta skaters must skate a one-minute program to music, which must include one and only one additional maneuver of Freestyle 1. Alpha and Beta skaters must perform a minimum of five crossovers in each direction. Beta skaters must lift their foot on the backward crossovers. In Gamma, three strokes must precede the Mohawk combination, for a total of at least seven steps.

4. Freestyle programs must include all maneuvers from the test level they are competing in and may include any maneuvers of the tests below that level.

5. There are certain maneuvers that are not listed as requirements in any test level. These moves are called uncaptured moves. According to the 2016 Rule revisions:

“Uncaptured Moves – For many years, there have been uncaptured move limitations (based on the skater’s test level) for most ISI events. An uncaptured move is any gliding maneuver, jump, or spin that is not a required maneuver on any test level.

The uncaptured moves limitations for gliding maneuvers, jumps, and spins have been removed for the following events: Artistic, Couples, Couples Spotlight, Freestyle, Interpretive, Open Freestyle, Open

Pair, Pair, Rhythmic, Solo Spotlight, Themed Spotlight, Freestyle Synchro, and Team Compulsories. There are no uncaptured maneuvers allowed in Solo Compulsory and Jump & Spin events. Only the selected maneuvers can be performed along with 3-turns, mohawks, crossovers, and arm movements.

CAUTION: When adding any additional move to any program, carefully check to make sure that move is not a required maneuver on a higher test level.

6. Open Freestyle Events: Judging criteria for Open Freestyle and Open Freestyle Short Programs: Correctness of Jumps, Correctness of Spins, Correctness of Turns and Edges, Choreography and Pattern, Variety of Moves, Music Interpretation, Posture, Presentation, Duration, and General Overall.

7. In Spotlight events, Tots- Delta are permitted to perform maneuvers at the Freestyle 1 level or lower. Skaters in Freestyle 1 – 3/Open Bronze levels are permitted to perform maneuvers from the Freestyle 4 level or lower. Skaters in Freestyle 4 & 5/Open Freestyle Silver are permitted to perform maneuvers from Freestyle 6 and below. Skaters in Freestyle 6 – 10/Open Gold or Platinum levels are permitted to perform maneuvers from any level. For uncaptured moves, see Red Highlighted revision above.

8. Jump and Spin Teams: The best jump and spin will be judged. Team jumping and spinning will consist of 4 skaters per team. Each skater will skate two attempts of their maneuver. Directors must turn in their line-up (indicating names of teams, team skater assignments and which team members will perform which moves) no later than 12 November, 2016. Open Freestyle Silver competitors may compete on Level A or B teams, but not both. See attached team event list to review the required jumps and spins.

9. Element Team: This event is considered a “created event” for this competition. The event guidelines and judging criteria will not be found in the ISI Handbook. The best element will be judged. Each element team will consist of 4 skaters per team. Each skater will skate two attempts of their maneuver. Directors must turn in their line-up (indicating names of teams, team skater assignments and which team members will perform which moves) no later than 12 November, 2016. See attached team event list to review the required elements.

10. Spiral Team: This event is considered a “created event” for this competition. The event guidelines and judging criteria will not be found in the ISI Handbook. The best spiral will be judged. Each spiral team will consist of 4 skaters per team. Each skater will skate two attempts

of their maneuver. Directors must turn in their line-up (indicating names of teams, team skater assignments and which team members will perform which moves) no later than 12 November, 2016. See attached team event list to review the required spirals.

10. Synchronized teams must have a minimum of eight and a maximum of 24 skaters. Age groupings will be at the discretion of the Competition Director.

Tots: Skaters are to perform a program to music, including all of the required compulsory maneuvers from the test level. Since these are encouragement levels, the competition director may allow coaches to accompany young skaters on the ice during these events. Note: Duration is not graded at this level; however, the music can be stopped and judging stops after one minute ten seconds.

Pre-Alpha/Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta: Skaters are to perform a program to music for one minute, including all the required compulsory maneuvers from the test and one additional FS 1 maneuver. Moves from a lower level are also permitted.

Artistic Skating: This event is open to all skaters Freestyle 1/Open Freestyle Bronze and above. There are no required moves and no grade for technical merit. Emphasis is placed on strong edges, body positions, flow, music interpretation, rhythm, choreography and artistry. This event differs from a spotlight where focus is placed on prop, costume and theme. Props are not permitted.

Comedy Teams: Two or more skaters present a comedy routine. These skaters perform a routine that includes: satire, humor, light and amusing characters or scenes, while using props and costumes. Judging is similar to that of a Spotlight event, although the comedic element is included in judges/audience appeal. Program length: 2 minutes all levels Comedy Extravaganza is for a group of 15 or more skaters. Program length: 3-4.5 min.

Solo Compulsories: Individual skaters are grouped together by age and ability level and perform three compulsory maneuvers from their test level on half ice. Maneuvers may be performed in any order with a minimum of connecting steps. Each maneuver may only be attempted one time. Additional maneuvers, such as any jump, spin or gliding maneuver from a test level, or any uncaptured move, are not allowed. There is a time limitation of one minute. NOTE: There is no penalty for the quantity of swizzles, wiggles, strokes or crossovers performed at the Pre-Alpha – Beta levels. Only the quality of these maneuvers is judged. Pre-Alpha-Freestyle 3 levels will perform on half-ice and Freestyle 4-Freestyle 10 levels will perform on full ice.

Dance 1-10: Solo Dance/Partner Dance-Similar/Mixed: This is the skater’s version of Ballroom Dancing. Test levels begin with basic steps and patterns, and then advance to a higher performance level. Ice dancing can be enjoyed at any age or level. Skaters are no longer required to pass the Delta test to participate in events.

Edges: In order to be eligible for the Edges event, a skater must have passed the Delta level and may not have passed higher than Freestyle 4. Deltas will skate forward outside and inside edges. Freestyle 1-4 will skate backward outside and inside edges.

--Edges Low: Skater will perform a line of consecutive forward outside edges followed by a line of consecutive forward inside edges. Edges High will perform a line of consecutive backward outside edges followed by a line of consecutive backward inside edges.

Figures Traditional: All skaters must have passed the Figure 1 test. Skaters in the Pre-Alpha-Delta may not compete in this event. Skaters must compete at their current ISI Figure test level. The figures to be skated are listed below: FIGURE SELECTIONS FOR 2016 NATIONAL EVENTS and Holiday on Ice 2016

Figure 1 Forward Outside Waltz Eight Figure 2 Backward Outside Eight Figure 3 Backward Inside Eight Figure 4 Forward Outside Loop Figure 5 Left Forward Inside Bracket Figure 6 LFO Change Loop Figure 7 LFO Paragraph Three Figure 8 LFO Rocker Figure 9 LBO Paragraph Double Three Figure 10 The Flower

Footwork: Skaters perform footwork sequences of their own design to music. The program should contain a variety of turns and sequences. The program may contain 1/2 rotation jumps, and spins less than three revolutions. Program length: 1 minute.

Free Dance 1-10: The ISI events are based on the Free Dance Test levels (1-10). Each couple must pass the corresponding test level to compete in the Free Dance events. For the competition event, each couple must perform a free dance of their own design; it should express the couple’s inspirational and artistic capabilities.

Interpretive Spotlight: This event is open to skaters at the FS 1 level and above. Skaters will hear a piece of music once off the ice; twice during the group warm-up; and once more before competing while they mentally choreograph a skating routine – with no help from friends, parents or coaches. The emphasis is on the skater’s ability to choreograph an entertaining skating routine to music and not on the difficulty of the skating maneuvers performed. For this event, skaters will choose one prop from the prop area to incorporate into their routine. Props will not be used during warm-up and will be chosen as the skater goes out to perform.

Interpretive Spotlight: Back by popular demand!!!! This event is considered a “created event” for this competition. The event guidelines and judging criteria will not be found in the ISI Handbook. This event is organized exactly like the Interpretive Spotlight but you will have a partner for this event and both skaters will be scored as one team.

Parent & Child Duet: Skaters and their parents have a chance to be involved...together! It will be judged as a spotlight event with emphasis on props and costumes, choreography, and judge’s appeal. Level of entry will be based on skaters last test level. Program length: 1.5 minutes all levels.

Production: This event can consist of 8 to 32 skaters. All ages and skill levels are welcome within the group. Numbers in this category should represent creative, artistic work marked by freedom of style and structure, using costumes and props to illustrate the number. All participants must wear skates. Program length: 3 – 4.5 minutes. Production Extravaganza consists of 33 or more skaters.

Rhythmic Skating: This entertaining event required the use of one hand-held prop. The program should contain elements that employ the use of the prop throughout the routine. The skater must maintain control of the prop at all times. The same rules and limitations apply as for Spotlight solo events. Props are not allowed on the event warm-up. Choice of one: Hoop—wood or plastic (must be from rigid, non-bending material) Diameter—2’7” to 2’11”

Ball—rubber or plastic Diameter—7 ¾”

Ribbon--Stick-Wood, plastic or fiberglass with a length of 20” to 30” --Ribbon material-Satin or a non-starched fabric with a width of 2”-4” Length-Minimum 2 yards and Maximum 3 yards Spotlight Events: Skaters may enter only one solo Spotlight event. There are no required maneuvers in Spotlight events. Emphasis is placed on the theatrical and entertainment value of the skater’s performance, rather than on the technical accuracy of specific maneuvers.

Stroking: All skaters perform together forward stroking and forward crossovers in both directions. Skaters will stroke to music selected by the competition director.

Surprise Event: This is a “fun” event where individual skaters are grouped together by age and/or skating level. The skaters don’t know what they will be asked to do until the event begins. This event usually consists of tasks not necessarily related to skating ability. For higher-level skaters, the task might require performance. Always an exciting event here at the MAC!

Back for a second year, we are so pleased to announce that there will be three ‘special honors’ given out to three skaters, couples, groups, etc. These skaters and/or groups/teams will be awarded special honors for their performances and/or demonstrations of character, as nominated by the judges, skating director and competition director. Our 3 recipients will also have the honor of performing an exhibition (under spotlights!) at the conclusion of the competition if time permits. This year’s awards categories are as follows:

* “Excellence in Artistry” * “The Entertainer!” * “Good Sportsmanship Award”

Please remain in the building, with your team, for the awards ceremony and exhibitions, at the conclusion of the competition! Don’t miss your chance to celebrate with your team and fellow competitors!

Any mishaps or unforeseen difficulties will be decided by the competition director after consultation with the judges present. Grievances will only be accepted in written form from skating directors and/or team leaders. Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope for a reply.
