Highlights

A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan on October 26 at 1:39pm local time in the Hindu Kush region. This is Humanity Road’s 2nd Situation Report. It covers the affected areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan and focuses primarily on social media reports from 27 October.

As of 27 October, the government in Afghanistan reports that 115 people have been killed and 538 injured, and 7,630 homes,12 schools, 17 mosques, and 20 office buildings have been damaged in nine provinces (source). The Red Crescent is continuing to conduct damage assessments and says it could be days before the full extent of the damage is known (source). According to the World Health Organization, hospitals in the area have a sufficient supply of medicines and supplies (source). Authorities in Takhar province, say food, blankets and tents are in short supply at a time when people have been warned to sleep outside, in near-freezing temperatures, in case of aftershocks. In Pakistan, more than 248 people have died, 1,665 have been injured, and 4,392 houses have been damaged or destroyed in the provinces of , Gilgit Baltistan, Punjab, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and FATA (source). No international aid has been requested. The Pakistan government, military, and the Red Crescent are conducting rescues and providing relief supplies; tents; mobile hospitals; relief camps in , , and Bajaur; and mobile medical camps in Chitral, Shangla, and Korghar (source, source, source).

Situation Overview

Background: A powerful earthquake struck northern Afghanistan on October 26 at 1:39 pm local time. Tremors were felt in Pakistan, northern India, and Tajikistan. The earthquake registered as a magnitude 7.5 on the Richter Scale with its epicenter in the mountainous Hindu Kush region, 75 km (46 miles) south of Faizabad, according to the US Geological Survey. Buildings were evacuated in the capitals of all three countries, and communications were disrupted in many areas. Initial reports speak of people killed in Afghanistan as well as in Pakistan. Officials said the quake happened at a depth of 212 km. The magnitude was initially put at 7.7 but later downgraded.

According to Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), 248 people died, 1,665 people were injured and 4,392 homes were damaged in Pakistan. In Afghanistan, 115 people died, 538 were injured, and 7,630 homes were damaged (source). Officials on both sides of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border warned Tuesday that casualty figures most likely would leap once relief workers returned from villages so remote they can only be accessed on foot or by donkey. (source) According to Shah Waliullah Adeeb, Governor of Badakshan, 2744 homes and 12 mosques have been damaged or destroyed in the province. (source)  The Red Crescent is conducting damage assessments, but it could be days until the extent of the damage is known. Pakistan Highlights: 27 Oct:  In Chitral, the water supply was damaged, and 80,000 people to not have clean drinking water. Work to restore it is in progress. (source)  As of Tuesday, officials have not been able to get in touch with authorities in the district of Page 2 of 16

Kohistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province because the communication system is down and roads blocked. (source)  Many people in the Upper Dir lost their homes and livestock and are desperately looking for food and shelter. (source)  Most of the affected people live in northern Pakistan, where rain and snow are making relief efforts difficult. 27 Oct: Medical teams of Pakistan Red Crescent have established mobile medical camps in areas of Chitral, Shangla and Korghar which are the most affected regions with less medical facilities. PRC based on the initial needs is providing CGI sheets along with shelter toolkit and non-food items that include Tarpauline sheets, blankets, stove, kitchen set and hygiene set to over 2040 families in KPK, GB and FATA. Hospitals Afghanistan: Status: 27 Oct:  The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that hospitals in the affected areas have been contacted and are reporting sufficient medicines & supplies for the injured. (source)

Pakistan: Status: 27 Oct:  Medical teams from the Pakistan Red Crescent have established mobile medical camps in the areas of Chitral, Shangla and Korghar where there are less medical facilities. (source)  The government has ordered that all treatment (tests, diagnostics) are free for earthquake victims. (source)  The Pakistan Air Force is deploying a 25 bed hospital today. The NDMA will send air ambulance and medical teams. (source)  The Prime Minister ordered that the Nawaz Sharif Kidney Hospital in Swat be made functional. Pakistan: 27 Oct:  According to a police official in Peshawar, they have not been able to get in touch with authorities in the district of Kohistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. There is no way to communicate with Kohistan because the communication system has been disrupted and roads blocked. Vulnerable Populations 27 Oct:  UNICEF warns that children in the earthquake-hit areas are facing further deadly threats as extreme conditions and insecurity cut off communities from aid. Heavy rain and snow are compounding the situation. Communication is poor and access difficult due to the

tough terrain and security operations. UNICEF is warning that health, nutrition, hygiene and education services will now be under exceptional stress. (source)  IPPF South Asia is ready to deploy. They say the safety and protection of women and girls and ensuring safe childbirth are key concerns in the earthquake affected areas. Female friendly spaces are important to ensure safety and protection of women and adolescent girls in emergency. (source)  According to the Afghanistan government, 76 including women & children were killed and 268 others were wounded in the quake that hit Afghanistan yesterday. Numbers may increase. (source)
