YOUTH MINISTRY

CONFIRMATION

Congratulaons to our teens who celebrated their Confirmaon on Friday, May 10 at 7:00 pm with Bishop Elect Alex Aclan.

MESSAGE FROM GIAN GAMBOA, Youth Minister 296-3180 ext. 7908 As a 1st grader in Catholic school in the Philippines, I was taught early on about devoon to Mary. I never really thought much of it because it was so natural and part of my childhood Jesus is God, and Mary is Jesus’ mom, so we honor her. It was simple, and it made sense to my lile 7 -year-old brain. As I got older, however, more and more people started asking me why Mary is so important to Catholics. “Why do you spend so much me praying to her when you can just talk directly to Jesus?” I want to give two simple reasons as to why we, as Catholics, can and should have a relaonship with Mary.

The first reason we should have a relaonship with Mary is it helps us to love Jesus more. Some might say that more me devoted to Mary means less me for Jesus, but it’s quite the opposite. Every me we honor Mary, we honor Jesus. We cannot love Mary without loving Jesus. The point of her whole being is to point to Christ. Everything about Mary reflects Jesus because everything Mary is comes from Jesus. Jesus is the sun. Mary is the moon. Venerable Fulton J. Sheen says, “God who made the sun, also made the moon. The moon does not take away from the brilliance of the sun. All its light is reflected from the sun. The Blessed Mother reflects her Divine Son; without Him, she is nothing. With Him, she is the Mother of men.” The Lord Himself chose to come to us through Mary. What beer way could we come to Christ than through Mary? She is the perfect means through which God became Man. Consequently, she is the perfect means through which man can approach God.

The second reason to love Mary is simple. It is Jesus who gave each and every one of us Mary as mom. “When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son!’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother!’ And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home” (John 19:26-27). From the cross, Jesus gave us a mother. He gave us Mary. From the cross, He also gave us to His mother. The woman who raised Christ, taught Him, nourished Him, and protected Him, was the same one He gave to us. Mary is here to care for us, love us, guide us, and console us.

In Mary, we find the very love of Jesus, perfect and present for all. Never think that love for Mary will take away from love for Jesus. Love for Mary can only amplify love for Jesus. As St. Maximilian Kolbe says, “Never be afraid of loving the Blessed Virgin too much. You can never love her more than Jesus did.”

Mary, our Mother, help us to be like you. To love like you. To reflect Jesus as you do. Amen.
