CD Review:

Urban Cinefile’s Brad Green did a short review of the soundtrack here, saved to WM here:

According to the promotional flyer I received along with the CD "the soundtrack is bristling with testosterone". Well, I wasn’t expecting Tiptoe Through the Tulips but this is the sort of cut, sliced and diced mix of techno/trashy/thrashy sonic cacophony that might be embraced under the broad genre of "alternative" and simply makes me wonder: alternative to what? Melody, rhythm, harmony and dynamic variety? Successful slasher cinema does not by definition require a soundtrack with the aural sensitivity of a choir of chainsaws – check out the minimalism of the Psycho shower scene –and even the schlockiest slasher shocker should embrace a keen sense of irony. Perhaps that is intended here but it’s hard to tell. I first noted with anticipation that the extensively talented Guy Gross is credited with the film’s original score, but his only contribution to the material on the CD is incidental music buried under samples of lamentable dialogue. I haven’t seen a preview of the movie, but in context of the soundtrack, these lines (delivered in the style of inane banter in a low budget TV soap) mix in with the music – both incidental and some of the songs – to an effect that is neither ironic, funny, thrilling, chilling or horrific, but merely ludicrous… "It’s hard to scream without a tongue" – it’s also hard to be tongue-in-cheek; so maybe this character was lurking around the recording studio. Most of the songs have enough fierce frenzy to tap into the natural adolescent desire for adrenalin pumping catalysts, and there is plenty of marketing clout behind this, so it might shift in quantities to a teenage market; it’s just a shame the contemporary talent showcased on this soundtrack is shown up by the only stylish "Cut" – the fabulous old Split Enz hit, I Got You.

Lyrics:

As the film is laced up in the projector, and the lecturer (Pamela Shaw) advises the audience that it’s the only print in existence, and they’re really lucky to be able to see it today, the audience applauds, she tells the projectionist to roll it, house lights dim and the title “Hot Blooded” comes up on the screen.

As the lecturer walks down the aisle and takes a seat, a surge of demonic electrical energy heads from projector to screen, wrapping itself around the demonic figure on screen.

As the lecturer watches, smiling, the energy reflected in her glasses, behind her looms the familiar psycho, shears in hand, with a snicker snack sound on the soundtrack.

The image freezes and makes a slow fade to black.

End titles begin, as does a heavy metal-inflected number, “Can’t Sleep at Night” by Drill.

Lyrics as heard in the film:

Aaaah, yoohh … Aaaah, yoohh … I sense inside The need to rest You’re scraping claws … Over my chest A bad desire Slides up again I pray at night Forgive my sin No wonder I can’t sleep at night! No wonder I can’t sleep at night! No wonder I can’t sleep at night! No wonder I can’t sleep at night! In my head I’m heading down Toward the dark Beneath the ground I feel the presence… of the dead … They come to life inside my head No wonder I can’t sleep at night!

(The song ends abruptly and “Stop the Rock” by Apollo400 begins)

It starts with background, repeats of the word “work work” before the main lyrics begin in electronic, mechanical voices:

Stop the rock Stop the rock Stop the rock Stop the rock Can’t stop the rock You can’t stop the rock Stop the rock Stop the rock Stop the rock You can’t stop the rock You can’t stop the rock Can’t stop the rock You can’t stop the rock Can’t stop the rock You can’t stop the rock Can’t stop the rock You can’t stop the rock Can’t stop the rock You can’t stop … (Instrumental, with organ) Shake that paranoia Can’t stop the rock Shake that paranoia Can’t stop the rock Shake that paranoia Can’t stop the rock Shake that paranoia Can’t stop the rock You can’t … Shake that paranoia Come move me, move me Dancing like Madonna, into the groovy Shake the paranoia. Come move me, move me Dancing like Madonna, into the groovy ... (Instrumental, with organ) Stop the rock Can’t stop the rock You can’t stop the rock Can’t stop the rock You can’t stop the rock, Can’t stop the rock You can’t stop the rock You can’t stop the rock You can’t stop the rock You can’t stop... (Instrumental, with whirring and “work work” sounds) Let’s get down and dirty, babe … Come on, get down and dirty baby … Come on, get down and dirty baby … Come on, get down and dirty, babe …(“work work”) Down and dirty, baby …(“work work”) Down and dirty, baby …(“work work”) Down and dirty, baby … Down and dirty, baby … Bom bom da bom bom da bom bom Bom bom da bom bom da bom bom Shape the rock like Henry Moore Aphrodite at the water hole Shape the rock like Henry Moore Aphrodite at the water hole Come on Bom bom da bom bom Can’t stop Bom bom da bom bom You can’t stop Bom bom da bom bom You can’t stop Bom bom da bom bom (then also heard under the next lines) Stop the rock You can’t stop the rock You can’t stop the rock You can’t stop the rock You can’t stop the rock You can’t stop the rock You can’t stop the rock You can’t stop the rock … You can’t stop! (Abrupt end)

Composer Guy Gross:

Guy Gross worked on Stephan Elliott’s The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and subsequently did the score for Elliott’s Welcome to Woop Woop.

Guy Gross began as a composer doing scores for his father’s animated feature films, including Epic, Dot and the Whale, Dot Goes to Hollywood, Dot and the Smugglers, The Magic Riddle and Blinky Bill, before moving on to scoring the first 26 episodes of the TV series The Adventures of Blinky Bill.

In the VHS ‘Blinky Bill making of’ Gross was shown at work on the score, which like the music for his first collaboration with director Stephan Elliott - Frauds - was an orchestrated piece, using some of the players from the Symphony Orchestra.

In the case of Frauds, the players were dressed up as the “Victorian Philharmonic Orchestra”.

Frauds was Gross’s first feature outside the family farm, so to speak, and he thereafter became a very active composer, on both Gross company projects and for others, with Welcome to Woop Woop his third association with Elliott.

(Below: Gross in the Blinky Bill VHS ‘making of’) At time of writing, composer Guy Gross had his own website here. It contained this CV and these credits:

Guy Gross is one of Australia's leading film and television composers and recipient of the APRA/AGSC International Achievement Award. In 2012 he was elected president of the Australian Guild of Screen Composers.

From his British Academy Award (BAFTA) nominated score to the international hit "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert to the US SCI-FI series "Farscape", his film scores cover a huge variety of styles.

Testament to this diversity, Guy has received numerous peer awards including Best Music for a Documentary, Children's Series, Short film, Animation, Promotional Video, Advertisement, TV Theme and twice for Best Music for a TV Series.

Over his 30 year career, Guy has composed music for hundreds of hours of television, including dramatic mini series, children's animation, documentaries, commercials and also a number of Australian feature films. His film music has underscored the acting performances of Toni Collette, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Garry McDonald, Molly Ringwald, Kylie Minogue, Phil Collins, Guy Pearce and Olivia Newton John and his scores have been performed in concert by the Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland Symphony Orchestras.

Guy began film scoring while still studying composition at the Conservatorium High School in Sydney, Australia. Son of film producers Yoram and Sandra Gross, he began scoring many of the family companies' feature and television projects. Following in his father's footsteps, Guy directed and scored the animated TV series "Old Tom and wrote, scored, produced, and directed the animated television special "Blinky Bill's White Christmas".

At the age of 26, Guy scored his first feature film, "Frauds" directed by Stephan Elliott and went on to score four features with Stephan including the 1994 international hit "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" and more recently, "A Few Best Men". In '95, Guy composed his award winning score to the ABC TV series "Bordertown" for Knapman Wyld Television for whom he has also scored all three seasons of the internationally award winning TV Series "East West 101".

In 1999 Guy received the (shared) award for Best Music at the Tropicana Film Festival (Tropfest) for his score to that year's winning short film "Uno Amore". That year Guy also composed the score to the horror feature film "Cut" for Mushroom Pictures and soon after that began scoring the hit Sci-Fi series "Farscape" produced by The Jim Henson Company.

"Farscape" has been a monumental project for Guy keeping him busy for over three years culminating in a big budget, 2 part television mini series "Farscape - Peacekeeper Wars" which enabled him to enlist the services of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and conduct the 140 strong orchestra and choir to create one of his largest film scores to-date. Farscape has spun off five Soundtrack .

In recent years Guy has scored the tele-movies: "Dangerous Remedy", "A Model Daughter - The Killing of Caroline Byrne", "Joanne Lees: Murder in the Outback", "Scorched", documentaries: "The Howard Years", "The Prime Minister is Missing" and "Who Killed Dr Bogle and Mrs Chandler?".

Guy owns a recording studio complex in Camperdown, Sydney which houses a number of studios and composing suites. CHILDRENS' - ANIMATED FEATURES

The Feelers:

Being Mushroom, the company tried to use the film to help break the New Zealand band The Feelers in Australia. A music video of the song Venus could be found on the domestic VHS release, and can now be found on YouTube, though not necessarily with scenes from the movie, as per the VHS release.

According to the band’s wiki here, the song was the second one to win the band “the most played song in New Zealand” award in 1999 (the first had been Supersystem in 1998). The strategy didn’t work in Australia, as the band’s wiki discography shows it only charted in New Zealand as a single:
