Resumen. – Características de los leks y el canto estático de los machos del Colibrí oreji violeta- verde (Colibri thalassinus) durante un estudio de 3 años en un bosque templado del centro de México. – Aun cuando los colibríes son el segundo grupo de aves más diverso, el conocimiento sobre la conducta de formación de leks es limitado. Las características del establecimiento de 11 leks del Colibrí oreji violeta-verde (Colibri thalassinus) fueron analizadas en un bosque templado del centro de México, desde el año 2009 al 2011. En cada lek contamos el número de machos que lo conformaba, el tipo de percha utilizada para los despliegues vocales, y medimos la distancia entre las perchas adyacentes. Asimismo, verificamos la permanencia espacial y temporal de cada lek. Los cantos de despliegue de los machos fueron registrados para obtener el repertorio vocal. Nuestros resultados mostraron que los machos de C. thalassinus forman leks en ambientes espacialmente variables y con requerimientos específicos de las características del hábitat. Los leks fueron establecidos en zonas de vegetación secundaria, la cual generalmente estuvo bordeada por bosque de pino y campos de cultivo. Los machos frecuentemente usan pinos para establecer sus perchas de canto y las distancias entre estos territorios vocales individuales (8ñ15 m) define a estos leks como “explosivos”. La información registrada durante los tres años del estudio, indican que algunos de estos leks fueron establecidos en sitios previamente ocupados, incluyendo el uso de las mismas perchas de canto entre años. Finalmente, presentamos la primer descripción del repertorio vocal desplegado en los leks, incluyendo el número de notas emitidas. Son necesarios más estudios enfocados en la descripción de los requerimientos ambientales para el establecimiento de los leks. Abstract. – In spite of the fact that hummingbirds are the second most diverse group of birds, knowledge of lekking behavior in this family is limited. The characteristics of 11 established leks of Green Violet-ear (Colibri thalassinus) were analyzed in a temperate forest of central Mexico from 2009–2011. In each lek, we counted the number of males attending the lek area, type of perch used for the vocal displays, and measured the distance between adjacent perches. In addition, we verified the spatial and temporal per- manence of each lek, and the male display songs were recorded to obtain the vocal repertoire. Our results show that males of C. thalassinus form leks in variable spatial environments with specific require- ments regarding habitat characteristics. The leks were established in secondary vegetation zones, which generally bordered pine forest and cornfields. The males frequently used pine trees to establish their singing perches and the distance between these individual singing territories (8–15 m apart) define these leks as “explosive.” Recorded information during the 3-year study period indicate that some leks were established in previously occupied sites including the use of the same singing perches in consecutive years. Finally, we provide the first description of the vocal repertoire of static vocal displays at the leks including the number of notes emitted. Further studies are needed focusing on the description of the environmental requirements for lek establishment. Accepted 13 August 2013. 183 MARTÍNEZ-GARCÍA ET AL.     AMERINDIA n° 21, 1996 Verb morphology of Ixtenco Otomi Yolanda LASTRA UNAM / México Ixtenco is a small town in Tlaxcala where Otomí has been preserved in spite of the pressure from Nahuatl speaker who displaced Otomís from other towns such as Huamantla and in spite of the pressure of Spanish. The disappearance of Ixtenco Otomí will no doubt occur, however, because only older persons speak it and for some time it has not been transmitted to the younger generations. People 40 or younger may only have a passive knowledge of the language. The present paper is based on field work carried out intermittently in one-day trips undertaken in September 1990 and resumed in February 1991. The informants have been two men and three women, but the main informant has been David Alonso, 85 who immensely enjoys teaching his language making it a pleasure to try to understand its structure. Here we will deal with the main features of verbal morphology and compare some of the characteristics of the Ixtenco system with Classical Otomí and with the present-day varieties of Toluca and Hidalgo highlands. In the rest of this paper I will refer to the latter one as Hidalgo Otomí. 2 AMERINDIA n°21, 1996 In contrast to these varieties of Otomí, the Ixtenco dialect has lost the dual; the suffixes that signal the dual in the other varieties are used for plural here.     Toward a Comprehensive Model for Nahuatl Language Research and Revitalization JUSTYNA OLKO,a JOHN SULLIVANa, b, c University of Warsaw;a Instituto de Docencia e Investigación Etnológica de Zacatecas;b Universidad Autonóma de Zacatecasc 1 Introduction Nahuatl, a Uto-Aztecan language, enjoyed great political and cultural importance in the pre-Hispanic and colonial world over a long stretch of time and has survived to the present day.1 With an estimated 1.376 million speakers currently inhabiting several regions of Mexico,2 it would not seem to be in danger of extinction, but in fact it is. Formerly the language of the Aztec empire and a lingua franca across Mesoamerica, after the Spanish conquest Nahuatl thrived in the new colonial contexts and was widely used for administrative and religious purposes across New Spain, including areas where other native languages prevailed. Although the colonial language policy and prolonged Hispanicization are often blamed today as the main cause of language shift and the gradual displacement of Nahuatl, legal steps reinforced its importance in Spanish Mesoamerica; these include the decision by the king Philip II in 1570 to make Nahuatl the linguistic medium for religious conversion and for the training of ecclesiastics working with the native people in different regions. Members of the nobility belonging to other ethnic groups, as well as numerous non-elite figures of different backgrounds, including Spaniards, and especially friars and priests, used spoken and written Nahuatl to facilitate communication in different aspects of colonial life and religious instruction (Yannanakis 2012:669-670; Nesvig 2012:739-758; Schwaller 2012:678-687).

    THE BEHAVIOR AND ECOLOGY OF HERMIT HUMMINGBIRDS IN THE KANAKU MOUNTAINS, GUYANA. BARBARA K. SNOW OR nearly three months, 17 January to 5 April 1970, my husband and I F camped at the foot of the Kanaku Mountains in southern Guyana. Our camp was situated just inside the forest beside Karusu Creek, a tributary of Moco Moco Creek, at approximately 80 m above sea level. The period of our visit was the end of the main dry season which in this part of Guyana lasts approximately from September or October to April or May. Although we were both mainly occupied with other observations we hoped to accumulate as much information as possible on the hermit hummingbirds of the area, particularly their feeding niches, nesting and social organization. Previously, while living in Trinidad, we had studied various aspects of the behavior and biology of the three hermit hummingbirds resident there: the breeding season (D. W. Snow and B. K.     EL OTOMI DE IXTENCO, TLAXCALA RoBERTO J. WEITLANER En uno de sus primeros trabajos sobre lenguas indígenas de México, el autor de este breve artículo publicó un corto vocabulario sobre el dialecto otomí de Ixtenco, Edo. de Tlaxcala.1 Confrontando dicho material con voca­ bularios de Ixmiquilpan, Hgo. y de la sierra de Hidalgo y Puebla, llegó a la conclusión, algo precipitada, de que el dialecto de Ixtenco revela seme­ janzas más estrechas con el de Ixmiquilpan que con el de la sierra. Peca dicho trabajo preliminar de las fallas de un principiante, en lo que toca a la fonética y a la transcripción. El conocido lingüista francés Jacques Soustelle visitó al año siguiente ( 1934) nuestro pueblo, obteniendo un vocabulario más extenso y satisfac­ torio. Las conclusiones a que llegó Soustelle fueron publicadas en su obra sobre la familia lingüística otomí-pame 2 y pueden resumirse como sigue: En épocas prehistóricas los otomíes poblaron casi todo el Estado de Tlaxcala (p. 20). El pueblo de Ixtenco no fué fundado sino hasta después de la Conquista en 1532 (p. 477). Los otomíes de Ixtenco se relacionan en su fonetismo, por un lado con el dialecto de Jilotepec (Sierra de las Cruces) y por otro con los otomíes orientales de la Sierra de Hidalgo-Puebla.     Do Sympatric Heliconias Attract the Same Species of Hummingbird? Observations on the Pollination Ecology of Heliconia beckneri and H. tortuosa at Cloudbridge Nature Reserve Joseph Taylor University of Glasgow The Hummingbird-Heliconia Project The hummingbird family (Trochilidae), endemic to the Neotropics, is remarkable not only for its beauty but also because of its ability to hover over a flower while feeding, its wing movements a blur. These lively birds require frequent, nutritious feeding to sustain their expenditure of energy, and some plants have evolved to attract and feed them in exchange for pollination services. Prominent among such plants are most species in the genus Heliconia (Heliconiaceae), which are medium to large clone-forming herbs with banana-like leaves (Stiles, 1975). The hummingbird-Heliconia interdependence is a good example of co- evolution, and this study is concerned with one aspect of this relationship. Since several species of hummingbird and Heliconia exist at Cloudbridge, a middle-elevation nature reserve in Costa Rica, we wondered whether particular species of Heliconia had evolved an attraction for particular hummingbird species, which might reduce the chances of hybridisation and pollen loss; or whether the plants compete for a variety of hummingbirds. At Cloudbridge, on the Pacific slope of southern Costa Rica’s Talamanca mountain range, Heliconia beckneri , an endangered species (website 1) restricted to this area and thought to be of hybrid origin (Daniels and Stiles, 1979; website 2), and H. tortuosa occur together. Stiles (1979) names the Green Hermit ( Phaethornis guy ) as the primary pollinator of both species and the Violet Sabrewing ( Campylopterus hemileucurus ) as the secondary pollinator of H.
