In 1681, Nahum Tate rewrote King Lear to include a happy ending since audiences disliked the dark and depressing nature of the play (the original ending was not reinstated until around 1838). Similarly, Victorian productions eliminated the scene of Gloucester’s blinding or had it take place offstage. While some may argue that our culture may be somewhat desensitized to violence and fascinated with the darker themes than past audiences, I believe that it was 2010–11 Theatre Scholarships Awards necessary to maintain the violent scenes and the unpalatable ending in order to give audience members tangible, visceral messages about the costs incurred Dan Butler Theatre Scholarship by pursuing one’s own selfish desires and instincts.
