Dance on Film

As part of its commitment to creating a dialogue between artists and audiences about contemporary dance, Rivertown Artists Workshop (RAW) will present Dance as Authentic Narrative in Film. The screening and talk with world-renowned choreographer Marta Renzi, who has cre- ated site-specific performances in locations such as the Guggenheim Museum and the Staten Island Ferry, will show her three newest “dance on film” shorts at the Warner Library on May 15. Director Naomi Vladeck, who co-founded RAW with Sarah Levine, explained that "it made sense to provide a thoughtful dialogue around movement as a primary language in film." RAW aims to give audiences the opportunity to see contem- porary dance in an intimate setting, learn about the dance process and create an opportunity for artists and communi- ties to engage with one another. What Matters to Peekskill

An interactive public art installation will become a permanent addition to ArtsWestchester’s Annual the heart of downtown Peekskill. More than 1,000 community members of all ages, backgrounds and cultures were asked "what matters” to them. The resulting mural, created by 86 volunteers, will present 8-year-old volunteer Anna Yeh (photo credit: Lana Yu) a representative sampling of some of the most engaging and universal answers gathered from a series of live events, phone calls, emails and social media. With words of self- reflection in several languages that were given by youths, day laborers, families and more, the mural’s goal is to break down the barrier of perceived separateness and unify this culturally-diverse community. The artwork allows these citizens to act as both content and context for the piece, as it was made both by and for members of the community. Artist Lana Yu, Save the Date: June 16, 2014 who organized this project for which she received an Arts Alive grant from ArtsWestchester, stated that “while [citizens] may seem very different on Country Club, New Rochelle the surface, they will realize [through viewing the mural] that we have many of the same thoughts and values.” The installation will be unveiled on the west-facing wall of Los Andes bakery on May 10 at 2pm and will be cel- ebrated with drumming and refreshments. Art and Nutrition: A Healthy Combination

ArtsWestchester has been working with local schools on the creation and installation of four original lunchroom murals. Based on healthy nutritional concepts, artist residencies in Greenburgh, White Plains, Mount Vernon and Yonkers have been designed to activate nutrition education through hands- on learning and the arts. The initiative includes a ten-day artist residency for each school, in which a visual artist coordinates with classroom teachers, a registered dietician and the students to create murals entitled Healthy Foods = Happy Children. This cross-curriculum approach integrates science les- sons with themes of increased physical activity and healthy eating, and such art concepts as color and design choices, measuring, scaling, painting and the preservation of art. Students are taught to make healthy breakfasts and lunches together, and to track their fruit and vegetable intake in a diary, fos- tering math skills and furthering a sense of empowerment. The permanent murals will not only benefit the participants, they will also act Highview Elementary School (Greenburgh) mural, created with artist Ann Ladd as an ongoing reminder for future children and the school community – to keep healthy nutrition at the forefront of their lifestyles. Thanks to funds from Stop & Shop, Staples, Gabelli, and Aetna, the first of these murals will be unveiled on May 20 at Highview Elementary School in Greenburgh, where 120 third-grade students worked with ArtsWestcheser teaching artist Ann Ladd to complete an artwork entitled, Healthy Foods = Happy Children. Other murals of the same title are in progress at Yonkers Montessori Academy, with artist Miguel Cossio; Church Street Elementary School in White Plains, with artist Mie Sato; and Holmes Elementary School in Mount Vernon, with artist Pedro Nel Ospina.
