Padbury Women’s Institute News At our meeting in October we welcomed Michael Bartlett who spoke about the Amber Room in St Catherine's Palace near to St. Petersburg - somewhere well worth a visit if you can. An amazing place with a history to match. Our November meeting was our election night, and Angela Sutton was re-elected as President. We have increased our committee membership to 10, which we are pleased about - it helps to share the load. Claire McHenry decided not to stand again and our thanks go to her for the valuable contributions she has made over the last few years. Wendy Smith, Sue Christelow and Karen Burton have now joined the committee. The entertainment for the evening was provided by Richard Westcott, and was entitled Confessions of a Pantomime Dame - oh no it wasn’t - oh yes it was!! Richard began with a lesson in 'over the top' make up, then Angela was hugely embarrassed to be roped in to be his 'dresser ' and un-dresser. Enough said. As the saying goes 'you had to be there'. A hugely entertaining evening. The run up to Christmas is always a time for celebration and this year Padbury WI has more to celebrate than usual. On 24th November 38 members enjoyed an evening at Four and 20 to celebrate our 95 years of WI in Padbury. After a toast we settled down (well actually no we didn’t!) to a delicious meal and afterwards two quizzes which kept the brains ticking over. We now look forward to our December meeting when we will all bring a plate of food to share, and the competition will be the best Christmas jumper. As always we welcome guests at 7.30pm on the second Thursday of the month in the Village Hall, and further information can be obtained by calling Sue Chadbund on 01296711626 or Angela Sutton on 01280 814398. Parish Council News Over the course of each month the Parish Council gets various emails from all different sources, some containing information that may be useful to Padbury Residents. The clerk will make sure that all of this information goes onto the Padbury Parish Council website as soon as I receive it, so please keep checking www.padburyparishcouncil.com. The website also has copies of the Council meeting agendas and minutes along with any information we are given about road maintenance. If there is any information you would like to see on the website, please email me at [email protected] and I’ll add the information and keep it up to date if possible. If you are interested in deciding how Padbury should evolve in the years to come, please contact Ken Roberts either by e-mail or telephone. In light of the Vale of Local Plan and a reduction in the housing needs, we feel this would be very beneficial to Padbury. A413 BUCKINGHAM to WINSLOW CYCLEWAY The Cycleway is well underway with an estimated completion date of January 2017. Transport for Bucks have assured us that any damage caused during this work will be rectified. The Parish Council will continue to communicate with TfB untilwe are happy that the project has been completed to a satisfactory standard. We have also communicated with the team regarding the large number of signs that have been put up through the village associated with the cycleway. We would encourage anyone with a complaint to email [email protected] and [email protected]. SPEED THROUGH THE VILLAGE The speed at which people drive through Padbury has been raised as an issue with the Parish Council by more than one resident. We do have access to a mobile speed camera that can be controlled by volunteers. In order to be able to use this equipment, we need someone who can arrange collection of the equipment from the local police, and co-ordinate a group of volunteers to man the camera for a couple of hours every few weeks. If you can help, please contact us. RESTORING FOOTPATHS Local Access Forum are looking to recruit volunteers to record footpaths, tracks, bridleways, cut troughs so they can be officially recorded. On the 1st January 2026 it will no longer be possible to use documentary evidence to claim lost rights of way. Volunteers are needed to check maps, walk paths and do research to ensure all rights of way are documented correctly. Church Roof 'Recently, a delivery car from Hermes came to my house with a slogan emblazoned on the side: "Take the lead" it said! And they did - at least, the thieves did back in April. Since then, a long planned refurbishment has been completed on the south aisle (the usual approach to the church) and to all the guttering and downpipes. Now we are embarking on the repairs to the damage caused by the theft. We would like to re-roof the whole of the north aisle and the nave with steel, which is much more difficult to steal than lead and much less valuable. To do this, we have to liaise with not only the diocese but also the Listed Buildings authority at AVDC and Historic , as the church is Grade 2* listed. The church architect is fully supportive. Work has already started to get the necessary permissions and we would hope to be able to have contractors on site in time for the work to be completed before next autumn. More news in February, not least about how we might raise the money to pay for this. We could need up to £60/65000. John Wrigley Church Warden Paul Nicholson. 29.9.1940 to 14.11.2016 Paul Nicholson who for many years lived with his wife Harriet and their family at ‘Queensland’ Padbury, passed away on the morning of Monday 14th November in Faro hospital on Portugal’s Algarve coast. In the last decade of his life Paul suffered the tragic loss of Harriet and daughter Sonia in a helicopter accident in New York and was fortunate to escape with his own life. For many years after that he battled with several types of cancer beating them all, save one. Paul will be remembered by many from Padbury Village as a kind and generous man and he and Harriet made their home welcome to many of the Village youngsters who went there, not just to play pool in their cellar, but enjoy their humour and generosity. Paul was Blackpool born and spent his early days walking donkeys on the beach for pocket money before setting off as a teenager to travel the world as a Merchant Seaman. On returning to dry land he moved south and started his supply business to butchers far and wide and that is how he met Harriet, a butcher’s daughter. He became a successful and well respected businessman and gave employment to many at his Winslow business. When asked what he did for a living he would say ‘I sell sausage skins’. Paul retired to Portugal not long after the business moved to Newbury. Paul became an accomplished public speaker and was a member of a very successful local debating society but after his family his great love was for Freemasonry, something at which he excelled. He was a member of many Masonic Lodges and rose to a very high rank in the Province of Buckinghamshire where he will be greatly missed. Paul’s funeral service was be held in Portugal on 28th November but the family hope to hold a memorial service at Padbury Church on Friday 20th January. Details will be made available once confirmed. For those who do not know “Queensland”, it was Witts End and is now Orchard House Ed. Volume 16 Issue 6 THE PADBURY PARISH PUMP PAGE 5

Vicar: Revd. Ros Roberts 813162. The Vicar writes Associate Priest: Revd. Kay Peck 01296 714253 We have started to make our preparations for Christmas. Have you seen this year’s John Lewis advert with the animals playing on the trampoline with the boxer dog watching and longing to join in, then rushing out to play on it himself? The sequel is a YouTube clip of a family dog watching the dog and bouncing up and down in front of the TV with dog on the trampoline. Christmas is a time to celebrate, even with the economic and political uncertainties we have. But not everyone feels that it is a time to celebrate. The advert reminds us that we all have longings and wishes, some that will happen and others that will be unfulfilled. The advert also reminds us God wants us to join in with him and he wants to join in with us, but so often is left out, that he understands the longings so many of us have at this time of year and the difficulties and fears for the future we face. Even in the bustle and busyness of the season we can still wait in growing excitement as we mark off each day in Advent until Christmas. Along with writing the cards, wrapping the presents, putting up the decorations and buying the food we can find time to think as the Advent calendar is opened or the candle lit that Jesus’ birth at Christmas is God with us, in the midst of all that happens to us. He came as a babe in a manger and brought hope into a troubled world and into troubled lives, showing us a God who wants to be with us and touch us at the point where we really need him to be. By living amongst us Jesus came not to wave a magic wand and make everything better but to show us a different way of living; where we respect and care for each other and take responsibility for our actions and their effect on others. Each of us has something to give and the act of giving brings a gift to those who give as well as those who receive. So this Christmas let’s enjoy the fun and celebrations but look beyond as well and make a difference by giving the most valuable, precious and expensive of all gifts to our families, friends and neighbours, the gift of ‘pure love’, and be the word of comfort; word of strength; word of love; word of encouragement to them in what we say and how we act. Let’s hear again with fresh understanding the age old story of God's love and let the light of God shine into our lives and know that God is with us.

God grant you the light of Christmas, which is faith; The warmth of Christmas, which is love; The radiance of Christmas, which is purity; The righteousness of Christmas, which justice; The belief in Christmas, which is truth; The all of Christmas, which is Christ. Amen

Best wishes and every blessing for Christmas and the New Year. Ros Revd Ros Roberts 01280 813162 .vicar@gmail .com

Winslow Police Office, I have been informed by a member of Padbury Parish Council that signs are to be 81 High Street, Winslow, Bucks, hung on these poles giving direction to cyclists using the pathway. News from St Mary's One of the things that came out of Revd Ros’s Sabbatical was a focus on the spiritual healing powers of horticulture, which was started by her visit to a Community interaction group. They use church grounds/gardens as a focal point for interacting with new people by planting/landscaping - even creating labyrinths. Ros sees this as a key element in discipleship. The Bill Thatcher garden area is likely to be the first area to be replanted. We are also looking at introducing “Messy Church” into Padbury – an approach which has been very successful elsewhere; especially in rural areas. This provides an informal environment for all-ages to explore and experience faith and worship through crafts, food and celebration. No one is perfect and each of us lead “messy” lives for many reasons. Messy Church invites us to come together, making things together, eating together and celebrating God together. It is NOT just a craft club, not just for children; it is for everyone – young and old alike, adults, teenagers, children, carers and grandparents. It provides an opportunity for people to worship together, to feel they belong in church and to each other, to have fun and be creative together and to introduce Jesus through hospitality, friendship, stories and worship. The first foray into Messy Church will be on Sunday 4th December at 4.30pm –“Messy Advent”. Includes Father Christmas! Be there! The Friends of St Mary’s held a very successful wine tasting at the church – duly decked in French flags - on Saturday 12th November. More than 30 people attended to sample Robert’s super wine from his chateau, Moulin de Moustelat – and to buy a goodly number of bottles! The event raised nearly £300.00 for church funds. On 17th December, we will hold a Christmas concert at the church, featuring the Adstock Singers and their Orchestra, led by Lucy Bignall. The concert starts at 7.30 and will feature a wide range of music - from Bach and Vivaldi to Leonard Cohen and John Rutter: music to relax to, to set the pulse racing and to sing to! Tickets are £5.00 from Paul Cresswell and the Vicar Ros Roberts. Wine and nibbles available.

This has been a very busy term, starting with the laying of a wreath at Padbury Church and our children participating in Remembrance Services at both Padbury and Adstock Churches, and finishing with all our end of year celebrations. During the term, Year 3 and 4 took part in a hockey tournament with three other local schools. It was a great opportunity to meet and work co-operatively with pupils from these schools. The children were impressed by the good sportsmanship and teamwork that was on display in the ‘mixed teams’ (each team had pupils from the four schools) and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They are looking forward to the Handball Tournament planned for next term. One of our Governors joined the youngest children for their final Forest School session and wrote: “As a Governor and parent I was curious to see what this forest school was that everybody spoke of. So, on the day, I could take time off work I went along to the Earnest Cooke Trust managed woodland near , Aylesbury and found myself in a magical experience. Governors often find themselves looking at spreadsheets or policies helping Mrs Duckworth and the other staff to maintain the very high standards that they expect. It was a pleasure to see the staff and the Rabbits, Hedgehogs and Owls in action. Literacy (reading a checklist of things to find in the woodland), Science (the principles of combustion) and Biology were all incorporated (Did you know there was such a thing as a Larch Pine – I certainly didn’t!) The children were brilliant and played in a both structured and unstructured way. As a Governor, it was fabulous to see the value that was gained by incorporating so much of the curriculum in the session. It was also wonderful to see how the different age groups supported each other, discussed things, and played together. I can’t help but say that I hope the staff all felt proud of their work. I felt proud of the school in my small way as a Governor. Hats off to them all.” The new hall is now open and being well-used. The children love it and the staff are grateful for the space and opportunities it offers them. The car park should be finished by the time this goes to press and will be back to normal. Thanks to everybody for their support and forbearance during the Big Build! Rehearsals are under way for the Nativity Performance by Maple and Beech classes and the Carol Concert by the older pupils. This is a lovely time of year for all concerned and the children look forward enormously to entertaining their parents, grandparents and friends over the festive season. We would like to send our best wishes to you all for a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

The Chair reported that the accounts had been audited and they were duly approved by the Committee. The hall continues to be well used for a variety of classes, clubs and social events and remains financially stable. It was therefore decided that letting fees should remain unchanged for a further year. The 100+ continues to be a very important source of revenue for the hall and the next annual event for the BIG DRAW in March is in the planning stage. Watch this space. The elections were held for the Committee for 2016/17 and the Officers remain unchanged. Diane Long - Chair, Trish Iliffe Rolfe - Secretary and Sue Paxton - Treasurer and Booking Secretary. The remainder of the committee are as follows: Carol Bloxham, Fred Morris, Wendy Bull, Celia Fletcher, Mick Gough and Rene Depear. This year we were delighted to welcome Lynese Simpson and Wendy Smith as new members of the committee. During the year Isobel Durnford and Annie Gray resigned due to increasing work commitments and we thank them very much for all they contributed. During the year a lot was achieved. The back fence was replaced, the rear step made safer and new dimmable wall lights fitted, which greatly improve the ambience at social events. Theatre in the Village last November was a sell-out, as was the 100+ Italian Evening. The monthly coffee mornings continue to be well supported and in October raised over £170 for Macmillan Nurses. The Village Hall Committee would like to thank the WI for paying to have the exterior lighting at the hall improved. There is a new light at the rear that is switched on and off outside making it much easier to load and unload in a well-lit carpark. Please will users remember to switch this light off when leaving. During the coming year we hope to improve the cloakroom and toilet facilities and replace the old shed. Lastly the Committee wants the hall to be relevant to all villagers so if you have any ideas, if you would like to join the committee or organise an event please come along to one of our monthly meetings or discuss it with a member of the committee. The past year was reviewed by the secretary and it was agreed to be another great year for the Produce Show. Some of the familiar faces received many prizes again, but without them there wouldn’t be a Produce Show. The weather once again didn’t stop the village hall being filled with an abundance of colour from fruit, vegetables, and flowers with a stunning display of sunflowers from Stephen Dickens. Holding the produce show a week later once the schools were back didn’t entice many children from Padbury to enter. Are lives and other interests taking over on a Saturday with the produce show being pushed down in the list of priorities? Some of the same children’s faces appear every year; they, like the adults, are in competition with each other. The judges once again did an amazing job and were as always very thankful for the gifts they receive. Thanks must go to the committee for all the work that takes place behind the scenes to ensure the Produce Show is a success every year and also to Henry Paxton for presenting the prizes. Special thanks go to Mike for preparing the end of year accounts and to John Tearle for auditing them. The committee warmly welcomed Carol Venn as a new member. If you would like to join the Produce Show Committee or have any ideas on new classes for this year’s produce show, please contact the Chair Rita Plumridge 01280 822998 or the secretary Claire McHenry 01280 816495. Another great year, roll on Saturday 9th September 2017. Please note the change of date. This year’s Produce Show will again take place on the second Saturday in September. Padbury Village Hall Car Park Lighting- Padbury WI Helps! Every year Padbury WI fund raises for a 'good cause' in the local area and this coming year we will do the same except that our giving for 2017 has already taken place and we have elected to improve the lighting of the car park. We hope all Village hall users will feel the benefit. Tony Picketts has improved the lighting outside in the car park and we have done it now so that hopefully those renting the hall will see the benefit throughout the dark winter nights. At our request, Tony has installed a PIR light over the gate to the car park to make opening and closing it easier. He has also put a two way switch on the light outside the kitchen, which can be accessed from both inside and out. This means that those leaving the hall, can now put on the outside light from inside, close up the Village Hall turning off all the lights and still enter the car park with the light on, turning it off when they leave. NB Please do not leave the light on for the duration of your visit to the hall in consideration of the residents of Lower Way and please make absolutely sure you switch it off when you leave. If the light is left on, The Village Hall will know who was last in the Hall, and deal with the culprits accordingly!! PAGE 14 THE PADBURY PARISH PUMP Volume 16 Issue 6

Padbury Youth Club Firstly, Merry Christmas to you all - I hope you have a lovely time and best wishes for a healthy and happy 2017. We have been very busy since the last edition of the Pump. The Pokémon treasure hunt in the dark was great fun. Everyone running round looking for hidden Pokémon pictures, each one having a different point score. The winner was the one with the most points at the end. The winner of the Logo competition was Georgie Harvey and we have managed to turn her picture into a logo for the club that will be used as a letter head – well done Georgie.

We had a pancake night to raise money for Children in Need - £13 has been paid in from the club. The last session this term, is on December 9th as traditionally many members are away the weekend before Christmas. This will be an early Christmas party and we are hiring a bouncy disco dome. Younger siblings are invited so long as the parents come along too – to encourage them we will be having wine and nibbles to celebrate. See below for the rota to February half term.

We are still looking for a new Leader for the club. It is a paid position and we are prepared to send anybody who is interested on the Introduction to Youth Work course run by Action4Youth. The course is one day with lunch provided and is a general overview of running a youth club. I really would like to step down as I have done this for many years now. However I would be prepared to job share and still do the rota etc if someone was prepared to do every other week or even one in three would be a great help.

All Saints, Hillesden The inaugural Crafty Chatter Group was held on 16 November when more than 20 people turned up to share a cup of coffee or glass of wine, maybe do a little knitting or simply enjoy a chat with friends and neighbours. Many thanks to the ‘Gang of Four’ – Sue, Anne, Tricia and Pev for getting this off the ground so successfully. The next session will be Wednesday 14 December when there are rumours of mulled wine and mince pies! All other ideas for this group or any other common interest groups are very welcome! Gardening, keep fit, yoga and photography have also been mentioned so if you are interested in getting something going then please do so! As you may be aware, we are keeping the church floodlights on every evening instead of just weekends at the moment. This is because there have recently been a number of other roof lead thefts from local churches and the lighting is thought to be a significant deterrent to thieves. As the year draws to a close we once again owe a debt of thanks to our band of flower arrangers who work so hard to keep the church looking attractive and welcoming throughout the year. A special thank you to James for his Remembrance poppy display too.
