Matters Arising from Minutes: No matters arising from 112th Annual General Meeting minutes. 5. Correspondence: i) Garry Wood spoke on correspondence. This was mainly all of the emails from Auckland Cricket. He stressed that the running of community cricket is no longer a season task, as much of the preparation and planning for each incoming season was now being done well in advance of each season’s start. 6. ACA Report Iain Laxon Dean Bartlett addressed the meeting on behalf of Auckland Cricket. He provided a snapshot of where he thought cricket was now. He gave his view of the recent One Day World Cup and hoped that Clubs would be able to leverage off the success of the Black Caps. He also made mention of the way in which the Black Caps conducted themselves both on the field and off the field as an example of the way the Spirit of Cricket should be used as an example to all cricketers. He then mentioned the ‘Auckland Way’ initiatives the Auckland Cricket are looking to initiate. He mentioned Will Somerville as an example of the feel-good factor of Cricket as the 35 year old continues with his very late introduction to International Cricket. Domestically both the Aces and Hearts had disappointing seasons. New coaches have been appointed for both sides with Heinrich Malan taking over at the Aces and Nick White taking over at the Hearts. Dean made mention of Mark O’Donnell’s contribution to Auckland Cricket over a long period as Aces coach. The big plus was that all five age group sides that represented ACA over the season won their respective national tournaments. He emphasised that last season had put massive pressure on Clubs with so many changes around playing formats especially with the Age and Stage roll out at junior levels, the addition of mid-week junior T20 and the revamping of District cricket. He stressed that was a difficult time for all but that the incoming season should be much better. He did say that the amount of teams was up 25% but that some of that was due in the playing numbers for 11 to 9 in juniors grades. He thanked Papatoetoe Recreation and Council staff for a consistently high standard of wicket and surrounds and especially made mention of Wayne, our tireless groundsman. He noted that the number of umpires had risen to over 100 and this was a very good sign in this key part of the management of games, especially as it filtered down the grades. The aim was to increase numbers up to 140 for the next season.

14 Coaching numbers were with 903 coaches recorded on Friendly Manager with 83% of all teams having a qualified coach. In the Women’s space Dean mentioned the performance of Lagi Telea in being awarded the MVP for the Premier Women’s grade as well as fostering the continuing relationship with Samoa Cricket. He finished off by thanking the Life Members in attendance and added that it was a real strength of the Club. Nigel Hurst thanked Dean for his time and ACA’s ongoing support of the club. 7. President’s Report a. Moved Peter Boyd, seconded Garry Wood that the Presidents report was taken as read. Nigel spoke to his report and mentioned that it was tough for Clubs as he described similar situations in school rugby where he was associated with the Auckland Secondary Schools Committee.. He stated that he thought things have changed and kids have a lot more options than perhaps was the case once, so Clubs have to work very hard to keep their numbers up. Peter Boyd, Seconded Garry Wood Carried. 8. Chairman of the Management Committee Report: a. Moved Garry Wood, seconded Neil Ronaldson the Chairman’s report was taken as read. Peter Boyd spoke to his report and reinforced his message about supporting the Club, especially off the field. Garry Wood, Seconded Lance Shaw Carried. 9. Presentation and adoption of Annual Report and Balance Sheet for 2018/19 i) Financial Report: ii. Garry spoke to the annual accounts. He explained that it had been a year of much change, including the accounting software program. He also explained that the failure to gain an initial ball grant for the incoming season had a big impact from the outset on the new financial year. He also explained that although actual total grants where up a couple of key ones leading into the off-season were not received and this had an impact on the period where little income is historically received. He mentioned the ACA discretionary funding and explained that this was not granted for the second year as the ACA sought to approve projects in other Clubs. He mentioned the accounting fees and reiterated that grant funding was received to cover that cost. Depreciation was up due to more equipment being bought. Staff costs were also up as with all the staff now being on payroll ACC, Kiwisaver and PAYE were significant additional costs. 1. Garry to open the floor up for questions. 2. Dennis Currie queried why the ACA discretionary grants were not reflected in the cost of less activity. Garry replied that the cost centres from the previous years had been changed 3. David Price asked why the financial year had changed to March 31st? Garry responded that it was actually written down in the Club’s constitution. Nigel Hurst thanked Aileen Mitchie for all her efforts on preparing the annual accounts. Moved: Lance Shaw that the Financial report be accepted, Seconded Gareth Shaw Carried. 10. Election of Officers for the 2019-20 Season a) Moved: Garry Wood that Guy Ronaldson be re-elected as Patron. Seconded Dennis Currie Carried. Nigel Hurst reminded everyone about the Papatoetoe Sports Awards and that the Club should buy a table. He mentioned Lagi Tele’a as a very good nomination from the women’s section where she won MVP for the Auckland Cricket Premier Women’s section. b. Logan Clarke asked about the availability and type of lunches that were available on Saturdays during the season. He felt it was a bit of a turn off and bad look for the Club with happened. He agreed to meet with Garry and the caterer before the new season to sort it out. c. Logan also asked as to why the Bar could not be open on Thursday evening after practice. Much discussion followed as to how this could work. Garry and Logan will talk to Kolmar to see how this might work. d. Logan asked what the situation with overseas players was. Garry replied that the Club is in talks with Jake Dunford to get him over here as soon as his commitments with Jersey are finished. There are no agreement in place with any other overseas coaches. e. Vijay Soma thanked the Club for the new playing strip on behalf of the Reserve Men’s team. f. Amit Sud asked about playing uniforms for the juniors, as they wanted coloured clothing. Garry replied that the Cricket Express contract was finished so uniform and gear supply would be discussed at the next couple of committee meetings. There being no further business, the President officially closed the 113th AGM at 6.41pm

16 PAPATOETOE CRICKET CLUB CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

With another season in our clubs history behind us I congratulate you all for your achievements both personal and within your team environments that were reached and trust you had an enjoyable season. Whilst the rather abrupt end of the season due to the circumstances around Covid 19 was not ideal we were fortunate that 99% of most people’s season had been completed and the impact of cricket was not as severe as many of the winter codes will now face. A challenge we will face and have to put front of mind is how we as a club promote and attract particularly junior cricketers to enroll next season given we will no doubt face competition from winter codes whose seasons have been severely impacted this year, as there seasons may well be extended or the trend that seems to be emerging around winter sport and modules in summer seeming to become more evident along with the financial implications many will face. Under the Auckland Cricket bylaws we as a club have failed to meet certain criteria that affords us what is called “Premier Club“ status and have duly been put on notice for the upcoming season, this has a major effect on the funding we could receive from the ACA. The most critical areas we need to address is around our junior numbers and is something we as a club as faced for a number of seasons now. The support and direction from Auckland Cricket to help us achieve this and other goals is very encouraging and well received but we all as club members have role to play also, history tells us if you have strong junior club the whole club will flourish. Our staff, Garry and Regina, thank for your patience, perseverance and time fulfilling many roles and taking on more due to our lack of volunteers. Bhupinder your time dedication and passion for your club its people and our community I thank you for, you are a great Papatoetoe man. From a management point of view this year has once again been challenging. The cost of running a club continues to rise and balancing the books is a constant challenge. Thank you to all the volunteers who took on various roles throughout the season, you are a very important part for the club to function and will be even more important moving forward. To all of our sponsors and charitable trusts as well as Auckland Cricket who continue support us, thank you so much, we are forever grateful for all the roles and support these people and organisations play. After 8 years as Chairman I will be stepping down from my role, it’s time for new direction, enthusiasm and involvement of people who are active in the club. I’m disappointed that I leave the club in no better shape than I found it sadly but am committed to helping out where I can in the future. I must whole heartedly thank Simon Poole and Gary Troup particularly for their support, guidance and friendship over these years. Finally to our President Nigel Hurst, thank you so much for your dedication, unwavering support and love for our club, your role and presence is greatly appreciated.

Peter Boyd Chairman Papatoetoe Cricket Club

17 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Firstly, I would like to thank all club members for their loyalty to our club. This season has definitely been one to remember…. for all the wrong reasons. As I write my report I am in a bubble unable to perform on a daily basis my occupation as a teacher. Our season was cut short due to an airborne disease that has left our local community, our country and our world in a state of confusion and fear. In the coming months, we as a club face new challenges in terms of playing conditions and what we can and cannot do. I am asking all club members to unite and face these challenges head on. I would like more members to put their hands up for committee, after all the club belongs to all of us and it is our collective responsibility to look after it. Sadly, last year we lost Life Member, Jerry Green. Jerry started playing for Papatoetoe in the 50s and was still playing senior men’s cricket well into his 70s. Jerry and I played five seasons together, and with a wonderful group of young men around him won three grade titles. He was so close to his hundred. Much love to his whanau and friends. Our Club exists to serve our community. My biggest fear is that unless we have buy in from our community and our loyal members we may become a victim of complacency and poor communication. Papatoetoe Cricket Club is and always has been a leader in Auckland Cricket. How many clubs can claim among its members to have the opening batting combination of both province and country at their club? WE DO! Graeme Gedye and Rodger Harris. Our centenary in 2006 saw these two great men walk to the crease to kick off our celebrations. There was not a dry eye in sight on all the fields and in the club rooms. My challenge to you is who will we be wiping away tears for in 2106? I thank the wonderful Peter Boyd Chairman. Peter and I, believe it or not, were committee members in 1987! To his committee and all who have given their time freely, thank you. Gary Troup you are and always will be my mentor. Thank you for all you do, often unseen. Bhupinder Singh your loyalty and passion is a key to us going forward. To our Club Manager, Garry Wood, you are the glue keeping us together. You have my complete trust and with support that is hopefully coming, your efforts over the last few years will see success. Regina keep up the great work, the newsletters are a tremendous success and keep us all informed. I again thank all members for your efforts on the field and look forward to seeing you all in the coming season. To our sponsors thank you so much for supporting the best cricket club in Auckland.

Regards Nigel Hurst President/Life Member

18 GENERAL MANAGER'S REPORT

The 2019-20 season was one of managing changes. On the field, generally it has been steady as we go with most sides holding their own on most occasions. The Premier Men and Premier Women’s side were always competitive without quite finding the edge to challenge for a Championship. A significant achievement was Taofi Lafai from the Premier Women winning the MVP for that grade with an outstanding season with both ball and bat, as well as leading the side when Regina Lilii was away on frequent Hearts commitments. The really interesting thing is that this is the second year running one of our Samoan players has won this coveted trophy, outlining the value of this relationship with Samoa Cricket. Another significant achievement in the Women’s section was that of Regina Lilii, who fulfilled the captaincy duties for the Auckland Hearts when Anna Peterson was away on White Ferns duties. The Premier Reserve men did extremely well to find some end of season form that saw them

Taofi receiving the MVP Award from Club from the MVP Award receiving Taofi Garry Wood Manager, retain their place in the top section, while the 3rd Grade men were denied a real chance of a championship win by the impact of Covid-19 causing the cancellation of the last round. The One-Day sides provided two Championship winning performances with the Black Leopards and the All Star legends winning their respective grades. This was a significant win for both sides as there are some very good teams and players in those grades. While the schools coaching ticked along, the Club developed a strong relationship with local church groups based on the similarities with Kilikiti. This partnership saw 50 new members create a Kilikiti section in the Club that also provides a pathway to mid-week internal competitions at the Rec Ground. One highlight was the renowned English cricket journalist Scyld Berry attending a game of Kilikiti at the Rec that was organised for him to see a live game. This resulted in his article in the Daily Mirror in England that show-cased the game to the cricket world. Traditional cricket and Kilikiti side by and Kilikiti side by cricket Traditional the Rec.side at Berry Scyld English journalist Kilikiti watching

19 While there were many good things about the season, the Club still struggled to make ends meet. With such low season subscriptions there needs to be a concerted effort to find other revenue streams to make the budget balance. Fundraising is one way and the Committee is looking to run a function with a guest speaker this season. The support of our cricket community is vital for this to be a success. Watch out for more news in the upcoming newsletter. Sponsorship was another area that has been historically weak. Our thanks here go to Ash Bhatti at Marten Bakker Timbers for assisting with apparel for the Premier Men, but as a Club, we need to do better than this. If we want the Club to remain affordable to local cricketers, and still provide a quality experience we must work harder to find ways of getting revenue into the Club bank account. Finally, my thanks go to Peter Boyd and Gary Troup who are both stepping away from the Committee this year. Both have invested hours of their own time over many years now, in both committee meetings and meetings or other correspondence for the benefit of the Club members. Both have provided wise judgement and sound advice over a long period that has The Prem Men in action at the Men in action at The Prem Rec Ground been greatly appreciated by me. I wish them both well in whatever they choose to do with all that extra spare time and look forward to their company on the occasional Saturday afternoon enjoying a beer and watching cricket at the Club Garry Wood, 2019-20 Club Manager

20 PREMIER MEN CAPTAIN’S REPORT

The beginning of 2019/2020 season was all about continuing to rebuild our side from the previous year and supporting our young group of players coming through the ranks by giving them opportunities to showcase their talents at the premier level. Logan Clark as a captain had done a wonderful job for the past season and a half however, he decided to step down from captaincy. I was asked by our coach and selectors to captain the side after Christmas and it was with great honour, I Aujla Navdeep accepted this responsibility. I had great support from other senior members from our squad and it was very satisfying to be part of our younger players’ development. Firstly, on behalf of Logan and myself a big thank you to everyone behind the scenes that continues to help with the functioning of the premier team, Bhupinder as a player coach was again instrumental with his leadership and dedication to this group of players and we are very lucky to have a coach of his calibre. It was sad to see John 'General' Lee move down to Christchurch as he has been a massive part of our side for over a decade. General, we miss you mate, and you will always be part of us. Mr Vyas who was our manager this year is a very passionate man and it was great having him around the group this year. Brett Patterson, big thanks for taking up the scoring duties every Saturday, Neil Ronaldson for taking on the selector’s role, Vijay Soma for the constant effort and belief in the premier squad, Garry for taking care of all the off field jobs to make sure this club functions smoothly and to the life members and Old Boys who made their way down when possible to support us, your efforts mean a lot and we hope to continue to see you next season. Our season was a bit of a roller coaster ride we had some tremendous wins but at the same time we had some very heart-breaking losses. Josh Plummer was again a standout with his batting. His consistent performances meant it was only a matter of time before Auckland A came calling for his services and those opportunities were well deserved. Ish Sohi, our overseas professional was a great addition to our side from England. Ish has played 2nd XI cricket for Sussex county and his experience and ability in the pace bowling department was something acknowledged by everyone at the club. He bowled his heart out for us and his contribution with both bat and ball Josh Plummer drives powerfully Josh Plummer drives were crucial for us. I, personally want to thank Ish for his efforts off the field in sharing his experiences with our young group of fast bowlers. Once again, our player/coach Bhupinder Singh was instrumental with his bowling. It is a pleasure to be playing alongside a man who has given his everything to this wonderful club of ours. It’s great to have such an experienced figure on the field to pick ideas off. Harsh is another

21 senior member of our squad I want to thank for his contributions to our premier side for the past two years. We wish you the best of luck for your future in the states. After Christmas it was great to have our second overseas professional, Jake Dunford for his second stint with the club. Jake is an ultimate professional, the boys love having him around and he is a great help to our junior set up with his coaching. His energy was something we missed this a wicket celebrating Ish Sohi year and when he came onboard there was an instant moral boost for our side. I saw some great positives in our younger players’ development. Shane Setia who joined us this year from Takapuna missed half of the season due to an injury but when he got the opportunity he did not looked back. It was great to have Sunit Birla on the park for the whole season and I am looking forward to seeing him improve over the winter and becoming our lead pace bowler in years to come. Our key focus during winter training will be to make sure we keep taking small steps forward and keep giving our young players confidence and working on their development. My goal this winter is to create a culture within the group where players take ownership of their performance and their actions around the club. I believe we have room for improvement in that department.

The 2019/20 season was a mixed bag for the Premier Women as we faced some very challenging times amongst plenty of individual highlights. This season we were without the experience of Lagi Telea, Feala Vaelua, Toni Baldwin, Mereana Hyde, and Tetiare Mataora for various reasons. On top of that, the domestic season clashed with club cricket more than usual which meant that myself (Auckland Hearts), Lily Mulivai (Northern Spirit), and Malia Tato (Northern Caitlin Hakeagatoa Spirit Manager) were only able to play 8-10 club matches out of 20. Therefore, with a fair bit of experience lost within the group and as the saying goes ‘with adversity comes opportunity’ we did just that. This season provided us with a great opportunity to focus purely on enjoyment and development rather than results. This allowed the group to play with total freedom providing other senior members the opportunity to step up and contribute, as well as, give several U16 players the opportunity to get a taste of premier grade cricket, with some even cementing a spot in the team. So although our fifth placing in both the Prichard Cup and Pearl Dawson competitions may reflect an ‘unsuccessful’ season in terms of results, it has been successful in so many other ways. On numerous occasions, other teams and umpires have complimented our Premier Women’s side as being one of the most enjoyable teams to play against or umpire because of the spirit in which we play the game plus the fun and hard-working culture we have created. On top of that, the Auckland Premier Women’s MVP has come from our team once again with Taofi Lafai taking the honours this time, after Lagi Telea took home this same award last season. So upon reflection, this young and fairly inexperienced Premier side have plenty of highlights to be proud of: • Taofi Lafai’s captaincy debut and leading from the front with her most successful season yet as ACA’s Premier Women’s Club Cricketer of the Year. • Taofi finished with the most MVP points across the Premier Women’s grade, taking 22 wickets across 17 matches including a 5-21 against Parnell. On top of that, she was dynamic in the field taking ten catches and five run outs. • Taofi also scored her maiden half-century with 54 against Takapuna on Papatoetoe’s number one pitch. Carol, Cordelia, Taofi and Caitlin celebrate a wicket 25 • 16-year-old Caitlin Hakeagatoa earned her promotion from the U16 Girls with consistent bowling contributions in the premier grade including an outstanding 5-9 winning performance against Howick Pakuranga. Caitlin also showed us a glimpse of her potential as a middle-order bat in the premier grade with a quick-fire Taofi Lafai with the Premier Women’s Women’s with the Premier Lafai Taofi Award the Year of Club Cricketer 34 (off 18 balls) against Parnell. • We welcomed Anna Orpin, Helen Semau, Carol Agafili, Ruth Johnston, Samantha Guillen and Olivia Gregory as new members to our team and to Papatoetoe Cricket Club. We also welcomed back Faamitai Ngaire Anitoni after having two seasons away. • Cordelia Gallagher, Raniya Buksh, Carol Agafili, and Angalenna Vendt-Utakea from the U16 Girls also debuted for the Premier Women throughout the season. Cordelia, Raniya, and Carol all took their first Premier wickets on debut as well. • Anna Orpin (19 matches) and Helen Semau (9 matches) who were new members were 2nd and 3rd highest wicket-takers in our team with 20 and 15 wickets respectively. • 16-year-old young guns, Tailor Maika and Davinya Lulia were excited playing against a couple of Whiteferns, Anna Peterson and Holly Huddleston (pictured below) for the first time in our first match of the season. With summer just around the corner and plenty to reflect on, we are looking forward to getting stuck into pre-season training, even more so now after the enforced covid-19 lockdown. We cannot wait to get amongst another season to ensure we Davinya Lulia and Tailor Maika with White Ferns Anna Peterson keep building and progressing towards and Holly Huddleston being better, faster and fitter in the 2020/21 season. Last but not least, on behalf of the team I’d like to thank our President Nigel Hurst, Chairman Peter Boyd, Club Manager Garry Wood, and the entire Committee for all your continued support of our team, we really appreciate it. 29 PREMIER MEN RESERVES’ REPORT

In terms of results, Premier Reserve lads had a pretty average season. We had a few close games throughout the season where results could've gone either way, but we felt that the game was lost in key moments and sessions in all formats of the game. As a team we found that it came down to a variety of reasons. Experience, in-game awareness, personal game plans, and running factors within the club outside of our control that affected the team. We found ourselves facing relegation. In this time, we battled hard and in typical Papatoetoe fashion, fought against the top teams in the grade to avoid potentially getting relegated. "Ownership" was a word that we looked to implement in our work in the last few games, which allowed us to keep each other accountable. Covid-19 cut our season short by one game, which we were strongly looking forward to trying to finish in the middle of the table. In a more positive light, we were proud of the team having one of the best team cultures in the club and the boys really developed a strong sense of comradery and a willingness to play for one another. There is plenty of talent within the team, a young team which will learn, develop and grow together and as a result lead to successful performances. Look out for the reserve boys next season.
