Throughout the last 9 Terrace Bowling Club months I have been constantly and consistently impressed with our outgoing student leaders, Amy Weston, Josh Ferguson, Sarah Swainson, Jack Caban and Jazmine Hughes. Mon 24 Oct P&C Meeting 6:30pm Library Opal Cards Fri 28 Oct HSC English Area of Working with our bus companies they have mentioned that they are noticing an increase in the Study Day number of students who are failing to use their Opal Card to tap on and tap off every time they catch Yr 7 Art Excursion the bus. As it is part of the Transport NSW Code of Conduct for school students on buses, the drivers are required to ask the students to present their pass and note who regularly does not tap on/off. If a Mon 31 Oct Vaccinations 3 student regularly fails to tap on or off and the driver reports it to their depot, it could lead to the Student Leadership Conference withdrawal of their school pass and they would need to find an alternative way to and from school. This reminder will help to minimise any conflict between drivers (of all bus companies) and students Mon 31 Oct - Yr 10 Portfolios/Exams and will also assist in getting buses to and from school on time. Library Students were shown our PBL video and listened to Monique and Sam talk about their positive Tue 29 Nov Blue Ribbon Project Presentation Evening - experiences at IHS, and the many and varied opportunities and activities that are available at our Library school. Yr 11 & Yr 12 Parent/ Teacher Night Sam spoke about his involvement with the huge range of Indigenous programs, Monique spoke about her CAPA activities and her love of Maths and Science whilst Mr Tonks encouraged all students
to become actively involved at high school.

Budding Film Makers and Actresses in 7E! By Ms H Sheriff English Faculty
7E Students were asked to create a short film inspired by the Disney myth of “Happily Ever After.”
Chelsy Lindsay, Madison Ellicott, Chloe Burns, and Emily Green went above and beyond the task, teaming up to create a series of over 7 short films using the camera option on Maddy’s laptop.
The films were a subversion of the Happily Ever After myth, based on two characters named Agent Riddles (played by Chelsy) and The Tigress (played by Emily). The Tigress, used to be a girl named Rosella who was training to be an FBI agent but she went “psycho” because she didn’t get in (her Happily Ever After). Instead her friend, who happened to be the Disney goddess, Penelope (played by Chloe) got in and Tigress got jealous leading her to a dark alleyway where she met the main villain, Agent Riddles who was disguised as a fellow FBI agent.
The series ended with Agent Fadora (played by Maddy), talking with the Disney Goddess about solving the myth of Happily Ever After. The Disney Goddess revealed that there is no natural definition of Happy Ever After; instead it can be anything anyone desires it to be.
The students’ films were improvised with no script, remaining focused around a Mission Impossible theme. The students had a lot of fun, which came through in their comedic and clever series of short films. Be sure to look out for these talented film makers and actresses in the future!
GATS Enrichment Day By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer
One of the major events on our school calendar is the annual Enrichment Day, showcasing activities GATS students from IHS and our partner schools undertake through the year. Held on September 8, the event was another resounding success with families excited to see what their children have been involved in.
The bridge building competition is highly anticipated with Mr Everingham again in charge of proceedings. Raymond Terrace PS proved unbeatable again with the No. 3 team under the guidance of teacher, Mr Chad Manning taking out the honours this year with their bridge unbreakable at 62kgs.
CAPA students performed and displayed their HSC works, again of extraordinarily high quality.
The STEM Display was a busy area with Mr Graham keeping his eyes on the robot patrolling the room whilst Tournament of the Minds teams performed their pieces in the library.
Congrats to our GATS Co-Ordinator Ms Clair Wotton and her team - it was a really enjoyable afternoon. Thankyou! Silent Disco Workshop Spring Fair Poetry Competition
Tantrum Theatre “Silent Disco” Workshop By Ms H Sheriff English Faculty
Year 11 Standard English students have studied the play, “Silent Disco” by Lachlan Phillpott this term as part of their “Module B: Close Study of Text.” Students were very privileged to participate in a two hour Lachlan Philpott intensive workshop run by the co-artistic director of the Tantrum Theatre Youth Arts, Amy Hardingham. Tantrum Youth Arts is the leading professional youth arts company in the Hunter region.
Amy has worked with Lachlan Philpott on his play “Silent Disco” and has also directed productions of his plays, “Bustown” and “The Chosen.” Amy took students through Philpott's body of work as a whole, then worked specifically on “Silent Disco,” taking the students through script analysis, rehearsal and staging the scenes.
Under Amy’s talented guidance, students were able to act out scenes and give feedback on each other's work. Students enjoyed the workshop and it helped students gain a deeper understanding of their drama text and how it is intended to be performed on stage.
Amy was impressed with the students’ performances and encouraged them to get involved in Tantrum Youth Arts. Spring Fair Poetry Competition By Ms H Sheriff English Faculty
A big congratulations is in order for Jasmyn Williams (pictured right) from 7M who won the “People’s Choice” prize for our Spring Fair Poetry Competition!
It was a tight contest and all students who were selected to enter are tobe congratulated for creative efforts.
Our Spring Fair finalists were:

Congratulations also to Mrs Sandra Bisley who was our community prize winner!
The poetry competition was a great success and raised $128.45 for the school’s air conditioning!

Digi-Ed Animation Ag Show Team
Digi-Ed Animation By Mrs T Wallace Head Teacher English
On the 8 and 9 September, 2016, over 50 Year 7 and 8 students attended the Digi-Ed Digitial Animation workshop conducted by the fabulous Mr Ian Clarke.
Digi-Ed brought over $30,000 worth of cutting edge equipment to our school. Students were taught how to design and write a narrative on a story-board, create clay characters, design backdrops, shoot footage, edit footage, add titles, music and sound effects. By the end of the day students were able to take their projects home on discs.
Ag Show Team By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer
The IHS Ag Show Team and their driver, Ms Henry, visited Tocal College a few weeks ago with Bruce the steer for the 2016 School Steer Challenge.
Students from 12 schools prepared and presented their steers and were marked on weight, judging, parading, and oral components.
This competition is for school students to enter their Prime Beef cattle to be judged by an experienced CattleJudge. Big congrats to Rachael Godfrey who placed 1st and Dylan Petith 4th in the Junior Novice cattle Judging section.
The following day the students attended the Singleton Prime Stock Competition to show off their parading and ring skills with Bruce.
Farewell to two of our Favourites!
Farewell Mrs Sellers By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer
Forty years in Public Education seems a life time and that’s the milestone Mrs Jenny Sellers our Hospitality teacher will reach in February next year. This week marks the end of her teaching life as she is taking Long Service Leave next year pending her retirement.
Mrs Sellers commenced her teaching career at Barellan Central School, then Parkes HS and Pendell Hill HS in Sydney. Missing the country, she then taught at several Hunter High Schools before arriving at Irrawang High in 1985 - its second year. Trained in Home Science Technology, Mrs Sellers then trained in Hospitality in 1993 and has been updating her skills ever since, working in local cafes
and TAFE to keep her qualifications current.
Mrs Sellers also has another life outside school - as a Class A Trainer in Standard Bred trotting horses, which has kept her busy for 35 years with 4:30am daily starts. Phew!
We will miss you Mrs Sellers, you have taught children of past
students, you have an amazing work ethic, have been a dedicated and wonderful teacher and friend to many, particularly in your own faculty.
Farewell Mrs Karanges By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer
Teaching at one school for nearly 27 years is an enormous achievement for Mrs Lucy Karanges, having arrived at Irrawang High School in 1990 following postings at Cessnock HS, Gateshead HS, Toronto HS, Plumpton HS in Sydney and Belmont HS.
One of the most significant changes that Mrs Karanges has noticed at Irrawang High School, has been the advances and the impact of technology in teaching, not entirely visible at many other schools.
Her advice to new teachers starting their career is to persevere and enjoy the satisfaction that teaching can give - and to always be prepared. The ethos of PBL has always been a personal mantra of Mrs Karanges, who is well known for her respect, responsibility and trying for her personal best for herself, colleagues and our students.
Travelling around Australia is on the horizon for Mrs Karanges and her husband and we all wish her a safe, happy and healthy retirement.
Congratulations Mrs Karanges on your 38 year teaching career.

The dunk tank proved a huge success, raising a lot of money for Year 12's chosen charities, the Mark Hughes Foundation and Ovarian Cancer Australia. Teachers were good sports with the large majority getting dunked.
"Mr Elliott" opened the assembly with a thought provoking song especially written for the Year 12's.
Bidding the highest amount to win the honour to dunk our current Principal Mr Baxter, was our school SAM Sonia ably assisted by her offsider Ann.
Our students put a lot of thought into their look alikes (good one Riley, I mean Mr Tonks and all the Mr Turner mini me's) and were well behaved, organised and very funny and a great time was had by the whole assembly. Congrats Year 12!
