STARI GRAD MUSEUM

Stari Grad Museum looks after the memories and artefacts that bespeak the oldest urban settlement on Croatian soil, a city that has lived uninterruptedly from its founding as a Greek polis Faros in 384 BC up until today. This concern extends to its surroundings, which together with the town make up an inseparable whole, the Stari Grad Plain being a unique example of cultural landscape. Since 2008, the historic centre of Stari Grad together with the Stari Grad Plain have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. During the festival the museum will host a photography exhibition “Naval Heritage of Stari Grad”.

Museum opening hours from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 16:30 to 19:30

PETAR HEKTOROVIĆ'S TVRDALJ

The fortified palace of Petar Hektorović (1487 – 1572), with its fishpool and dovecot, is the most renowned building in Stari Grad. This Renaissance poet spent his whole life building it and it was as significant to him as his literary work. With it he realized the idea of the microcosm - a small, enclosed world where every God's creature has a space to live - fish, birds, herbs and people (the poet, his male friends, sacred women, travellers and paupers!). Tvrdalj is also a book in stone - Hektorović has carved over twenty stone inscriptions in Latin, and only one in Italian – his own life motto: Fede e realta o quanto e bella! (How beautiful are faith and reality!).

The fishpool can be visited daily from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 16:30 to 19:30

STARI GRAD FIELD

In 2008 the Stari Grad Plain and the town's historic centre were inscribed on the UNESCO list of the World Heritage sites. The cultural landscape of the field is an example of an ancient traditional landscape, home to the same vegetation for over 2400 years, while also being the best preserved systems of land division in the Mediterranean. A deep and protected cove, a large fertile field in the middle of the island and the numerous springs of drinking water have always been the reason for the settlement of Stari Grad. Greek colonists from the far-flung Aegean island of Paros founded Faros in 384 BC. Faros consisted of a city centre (asti) and its agricultural hinterland (chora). An ideal Greek city, its independence and self-sufficiency were ensured by its fertile field, then known as Chora Faru. This turned Faros into a proper city state.

FESTIVAL'S GUEST OF HONOUR: Association PALAGRUŽA

The idea for establishing a non-profit association "Palagruža" was born in 2009 in Komiža, a small fishing town on the island of Vis.
