The student’s academic advisor has a major responsibility as a spokesperson for and representative of the high school. The advisor is a primary interface between the family and the school and acts on behalf of both entities to facilitate the improvement of education for students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Credential: Pupil Personnel Services, school counseling required Education: Bachelor's degree; Master's degree or equivalent experience Bilingual Spanish desirable Valid California driver’s license

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Develop guidance materials for use in teaching guidance units at each grade level. 2. Keep students and parents informed of graduation requirements, college entrance and job training requirements etc. via classroom presentations, evening meetings and personal contacts. Parents and students make appointments to see the advisors and most of each day is devoted to this. 3. Help students select courses, plan schedules and make schedule changes as needed. (Advisors work from mid-August onward making schedule changes before the opening of school). 4. Conduct regular graduation checks on all students. 5. Keep students informed of testing requirements for college admission. Organize and conduct the PSAT test. 6. Assist students in making college choices. 7. Write letters of recommendation for college-bound seniors. 8. Attend conferences, workshops and seminars as needed to keep abreast of changes in testing, college entrance, financial aid etc. 9. Provide assistance for students applying for financial aid. 10. Keep students advised of scholarship opportunities. Write letters of recommendation for students applying for scholarships.

Talk with students, parents and teachers as needed. 12. Help teachers in dealing with problem students. Refer to and work with outside agencies to which students may be referred. 13. Serve on the Student Study Team. Work with the Deans and school psychologist to monitor the progress of students. 14. Assist with the planning and organization of graduation. 15. Deal with the day-to-day problems and crises encountered by students, teachers and parents during the school year.

MISCELLANEOUS: • Counselors will attend school and district departmental meetings. • Counselors will work with other agencies to provide student services on campus, or assist in promoting appropriate off campus activities. • Counselors will assist with balancing class loads with creating and deleting class sections. • Perform other duties as directed by the Principal.

CONTACTS: Daily contacts with students, staff members, parents and the Principal. Occasional contacts with Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services and Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/WORK ENVIRONMENT: School environment. Will travel to and from assigned school sites, and also may travel to and from the District Office to attend meetings.
