Bird Report 2008

This report highlights records for the calendar October. Two male Plains Wanderers were again year 2008 for selected species listed as located during the survey on Boolcoomatta uncommon, rarely observed or vagrant in A Station during May. Grey-headed Albatross, Thalassarche chrysostoma, RO (w). A juvenile was off Parsons Head, Waitpinga CP, Fleurieu Peninsula, (FP), MLR, on 8 July [Colin Rogers]. An adult was found alive at Pennington Bay, KI, on 4 November, but died on 12 November [Chris Baxter].

As is apparent from the photograph taken on October 4, this bird was moulting into non- breeding (basic) plumage and although the remnants of the plumage was worn, especially the wing coverts, with a few new grey scapulars emerging, it is easier to identify than a bird in first winter (basic) plumage. In particular note the following: the remnants of bold white mantle lines, white throat, streaking and Little Stint in moult on 4 October in Dry Creek spotting on the orange breast Saltfields.
