Welcome

Chief of Delegation CISM

Dear athletes,

Orienteering is a sport that claimed the body and mind alike. Each run is a new challenge: Within a few minutes, the runner must reference a map oriented in unfamiliar terrain and find the optimal path. Physical fitness and concentration are essential for a successful run. When Sprint Orienteering comes to this the speed. The choice of route is often a decision victory or defeat. In modern times, it has become unimaginable for many people to find their way with map and compass. Navigation devices have made our lives easier, but even so leave some ability forgotten. Dealing with map and compass, outdoor adventures and athletic component to the appeal of orienteering, both for families as well as professional athletes. Particularly for us soldiers, this ability is a key element that distinguishes us and for us is crucial. The sport of orienteering is in our Military Sports Association "Conseil International du Sport Militaire" one of the original sports and is practiced by almost all participating nations. More so, I am pleased that we here in Altenstadt have such a great opportunity to be able to deliver a regional tournament and to welcoming you all together. My special thanks go to the Airborne and Air Transport School in the Altenstadt under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Carsten Jahnel. He and his team have made this competition possible. I would also like to thank at this point in the come from the surrounding communities and sports clubs all helpers and organizers cordially. Without you, such an event would not be possible. I wish you athletes every success for the upcoming competitions. Enjoy your time in Germany and collect as many experiences and impressions as possible. Exchange ideas and get to know each other. True to the motto "Friendship through Sport!“ Your

Wolfram Henkies (LtCol) Chief of German Delegation

-2- Commander Airborne Operations and Air Transport School

As the commandant of the Airborne Operations and Air Transport School in Altenstadt, Upper , I would like to welcome all participants in the 2014 regional CISM orienteering competition.

The competition takes place here in the ALTENSTADT area, with the Airborne Operations and Air Transport School being the organizer of an international competition once again. The significance of this competition is underlined by the fact that nearly one hundred competitors from ten different nations have registered to compete with each other in this fascinating military sporting event, which has been the focus of public attention for many decades.

It is this particular discipline – orienteering – that not only requires a high level of concentration, but also stamina, great physical strength, and determination. In addition, a constant requirement is for competitors to be logical thinkers and display dedication and commitment during this specific discipline.

I look forward to an interesting competition and wish all participants and organizing staff successful days ahead. May the best team win!

Carsten Jahnel (LtCol)
