Regimental No. 16956 Vale: Jack Sue Radiographer puts heart into her work Many people assume that the only health professionals working for Defence are doctors, nurses or dentists – but the career of FLTLT Karen Thomas clearly demonstrates that the range is much broader. After completing the first year of a Bachelor of Science degree in medical imaging technology, FLTLT Thomas’s potential was recognised by Air Force and she was awarded an undergraduate scholarship. Following graduation as a radiographer and a year of professional development at Royal Perth Hospital, FLTLT Thomas was sent by Air Force to the peacekeeping operation Bel Isi in Bougainville where she was part of a tri- service health-professional team supporting peacekeepers from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Vanuatu. “We were also able to provide medical help to a number of Bougainville civilians which was another important part of the operation, because their health resources were understandably very limited,” she said. FLTLT Thomas’s dedication to the field of radiography led her to take leave without pay from the Air Force in order to complete a graduate diploma in sonography and a master’s degree in health science from Sydney University. During this time, she gained important real- world experience as a full-time member of Jack Wong Sue, OAM, DCM, JP also known as Jack the Alfred Hospital’s radiology department. To the Editor, I am forwarding this for the 60th Anniversary of WRAAC Celebration. WRAAC Association (NSW) has begun planning Boer War Memorial for the Corps 60th Anniversary celebrations back at the WRAAC School site at Georges Heights in Sydney. Although the Army has left the area the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust has done needs Assistance an amazing job in restoring most of the buildings for reuse by a variety of tenants while still retaining the military look including Building numbers, street names and THE MIRROR! Details are to be finalized but we envisage gathering on Saturday 12 February 2011 at the Guard House (the Kathleen Best Memorial Gates are now in Canberra at the entry to the Commandant’s house at RMC Duntroon), a brief formal ceremony , lunch, then the opportunity to wander down Memory Lane with family and friends through the WRAAC School area, to the Officers Mess (now an upmarket Tea Room), magnificent newly created Lookout across the harbour and revealed gun emplacements where the Officers quarters were, and down to Chowder Bay. There will be a Formal Dinner on Saturday evening then, on Sunday 13 February, a service at the Garrison Church in The Rocks followed by further fellowship, and a luncheon Harbour Cruise with family and friends if there is sufficient support. The 2011 Committee’s current focus is on building up a database ideally e-mail. of former WRAAC members, ARA, CMF and Ares who we can then contact with full details and expressions of interest. The Listening Post December 2009 31 Dear Denis, I was pleased to speak to you this morning in regards to a Christmas card sent by my father while he served in France during World War I. Please find enclosed a copy of the Christmas card, together with a copy of the message written by my father. The message is in Greek, I have attached a translation. My father enlisted in 1915 and was allocated to the 16th Battalion. He got pneumonia and was discharged shortly after. After recovering he applied for enlistment again in late 1915 and was attached to the 11th Battalion (City of Perth Regiment). During the War he was gassed. He was sent to London for recovery and then was discharged on Christmas Day in 1919.
