ISSUE 42 | VOL 14 | 18 JANUARY 2021 Vedanta Newsdesk NATURAL RESOURCES SECTOR NAND GHAR INNOVATION @ VEDANTA

A WIN-WIN PARTNERSHIP

It’s been a time-tested partnership between the mineral-rich state of and Vedanta, the world’s leading oil and gas and metals company - a collaboration that aims to fuel ’s ambition of becoming #Atmanirbhar in natural resources.

VEDANTA CHAIRMAN MEETS RAJASTHAN CM Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal met Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot over the last weekend to discuss how the State can leverage its inherent strength in natural resources. The discussions centred around the opportunities that the sector offers and the initiatives that the government has taken to realise the huge potential of the mining and oil and gas industry towards creating large-scale employment and contributing to the State’s economic growth.

During the meeting, which was also attended by key State ministers, Mr Gehlot said that his government is working on fast-tracking exploration activities. “The government will provide mineral estimates of mining blocks which will be offered to companies in transparent e-auctions. The processes for auctions and allocations will be monitored at the highest level,” Mr Gehlot said.

Mr Agarwal requested the state government to encourage start-ups and youths from IITs and IIMs and facilitate bank loans to develop the mining sector.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEVERAGE THE NATURAL RESOURCES SECTOR The government should allow private players to carry out exploration of minerals which will accelerate production and reduce dependence on imports. During his interaction with the Rajasthan Chief Minister in Jaipur, Mr Anil Agarwal said that the government needs to ensure transparency in auctioning the blocks, both for exploration and mining. “The government should allow private players for exploration. Today, exploration is slow which is impacting production,” Mr Agarwal said.

Hindustan and Cairn Oil & Gas have been big contributors to the State economy and has helped transform Rajasthan into a powerhouse in natural resources.

'STATE CAN EARN 63% OF MONEY INDIA SPENDS ON MINERAL IMPORTS’ Rajasthan is rich in natural resources and the state government can do roadshows for the 2000-odd blocks, which are identified and for which exploration work has been done, to attract start-ups and entrepreneurs. “The State should not allow only PE players to take equity in these blocks, but also facilitate bank credit. Each of these blocks have potential to create over 1,000 jobs,” Mr Agarwal said.

“Rajasthan is rich in zinc, silver, lead, ; along with crude oil, gas, limestone and potash. The state can realise the vast potential by auctioning these mineral blocks,” he added.

All the minerals imported from abroad are available in Rajasthan, and by producing these minerals, the state can earn 63 per cent of the money the country spends on imports.

RAJASTHAN FORMS TASK FORCE FOR MINING The State government on Saturday constituted a task force comprising officers of forest, mines and revenue departments headed by chief secretary for speedy disposal of issues related to mining sector. CM Ashok Gehlot said the government would work with full commitment, technology, transparency and investment-friendly policy to take the state forward in the mining sector.

He said the government would soon come out with a mineral and mines policy to provide a favourable environment for investment in this sector. Mr Gehlot said Rajasthan had more mineral wealth than any other state, but due to lack of proper exploitation, its share in revenue was very less. He said with the development of the mining sector in the state, employment opportunities as well as revenue generation would increase.

CAIRN: DOUBLING OIL PRODUCTION Vedanta working on big plans for Cairn Oil & Gas, which accounts for more than one-fourth of the domestic hydrocarbon output. “We want to almost double our production to 3 lakh barrels of oil per day (bopd) from 1.7 lakh bopd. To enhance the capacity, we have earmarked investments of about Rs 15,000 crore over the next two years,” Mr Agarwal said.

MORE NAND GHARS IN RAJASTHAN Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal has expressed his desire to convert 61,000 Anganwadi centres across 33 districts in Rajasthan into Nand Ghars.

Vedanta’s flagship social impact project, Nand Ghar, has been transforming the Anganwadi ecosystem in India by modernizing infrastructure and focusing on services for eradicating child malnutrition, providing interactive , access to quality healthcare, and empowering women by providing skill development. Currently, Vedanta runs 1100 Nand Ghar centres in Rajasthan.

“Through Nand Ghars we foresee an India where no child goes without a meal,” Mr Agarwal said.

NEW MINING POLICY SOON

“We have already constituted a Mineral Exploration Trust. The government is working on a mining policy which will be announced soon. The policy will provide a conducive climate to the investors.”

-Ashok Gehlot, Chief Minister, Rajasthan ASHOK GEHLOT

LEARNINGS FROM THE HZL MODEL

“When we got , people did not have great expectations. Now everybody knows how it has come up. Let us invite companies and auction the mines in a transparent way. The yield would be much more than what we think today. Since it’s a revenue sharing model, the state government is not going to lose anything. It will only gain.”

-Anil Agarwal, Chairman, Vedanta

INDUSTRY NEWS

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a raft of mineral sector reforms, including doing away with the distinction between the captive and non-captive mines, reallocation of non-producing blocks of state-owned firms, and amending some sections of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) (MMDR) Act to help auction more mines. The Centre on Monday awarded the letter of allocation to successful bidders of coal mines under the commercial auction held during October-November 2020. Speaking at the event, Home Minister Amit Shah said the coal sector will be the largest contributor to India’s ambition of being a $5 trillion economy. “The coal sector was non-transparent, complex and favoured a few corporates. But many small trading companies are now getting into coal mining, which was not possible six years back. India has one of the largest coal reserves and high demand but ironically still imports vast quantities. Reducing import dependence is crucial for our economy,” Shah said. (Business Standard)
