Camp Mountaineer

Location: 187 Camp Mountaineer Rd, Morgantown, WV 26508

Telephone: (304) 291-8512

Amenities

Camp Mountaineer opened the gate to summer resident camping for the Scouts of Mountaineer Area Council in the summer of 1956. Since then, thousands of Scouts have enjoyed the summers they spent in this great Scouting environment of over 1,000 acres. Initially, there were six campsites: Cherokee, Mingo, Seneca, Delaware, Shawnee and Catawba. With no central eating facility, all meals were cooked patrol-style in the troop sites. The rifle range was at the site of the current Green Acres cabin, and the Trading Post was a room attached to the old maintenance building at the top of the hill.

A major capital fundraising campaign during 1960-1961 throughout the council generated enough financial support to enable the construction of a winter lodge, new rifle range, and the current Dining Hall. These facilities greatly enhanced the camp program beginning in 1963. The current Shooting Sports Complex was completed in 2013 and the high ropes C.O.P.E. course was redone in 2014.

The camp features camp sites with Adirondacks, pavilions, an air conditioned dining hall, showers with hot water, two lodges for rent, and a boat house.

The Paul R. Christen High Adventure Base offers eleven programs within three program categories:

The Summit Experience program provides an introduction to all components of the SBR Adventure Zone;

James C. Justice National Scout Camp

Scout Camp

The James C Justice National Scout Camp uses the adventure capabilities of the Walter Scott Summit Center together with New River Gorge to provide unlimited adventure opportunities to older Scouts and Venturers.

Participating Scouts and Venturers spend an action-packed time at The Summit Bechtel Reserve camping at the James C Justice National Scout Camp located on the north side of Goodrich Lake in the Walter Scott Scouting Valley. Tents and cots are provided and meals will be served in the Bechtel Summit dining hall. The Justice Scout Camp offers program through three distinct avenues: The Senior Scout Camp, Appalachian Adventure, or Council Adventure Partnership.

Morning and afternoon activities focus on skill development activities like skateboarding, rock climbing, archery, kayaking, ecology/conservation, project COPE, mountain biking or wilderness survival. In the evening all Summit Center venues are available for open programming. This is where Scouts and Venturers can seek pure adrenaline and enjoyment through zip- lines, BMX, canopy tours, water reality, live music, relays, and much more!

Senior Scout Camp

The Senior Scout Camp focuses on developmental, advancement & training opportunities through both open and blocked programming in Summit Center. These programs are targeted towards Venturers and 1st class or higher ranked scouts with at least two weeks of resident camp under their belt. Most blocks are two ½ days and include advancement (merit badges/ranger electives), skills instruction and/or training certifications. Adults are encouraged to participate in any of these programs or take advantage of the various adult leader training opportunities.

Appalachian Adventure

The Appalachian Adventure program serves as a short-term campout for a unit. The unit brings their own tents and personal gear and can participate in open program throughout Summit Center. This is a great first taste of what The Summit has to offer and could be paired with other activities in the New River Gorge area as a great long weekend trip for a unit. Units may elect to do the Sunday to Wednesday session or Wednesday to Saturday session. Participants are free to move from activities as they please. While advancement opportunities are not a focus of the program, select merit badge/ranger opportunities may be available. For more info and reservations click here!

Council Adventure Partnership

The Council Adventure Partnership serves as an older boy adventure program for a local council camp. Scouts begin and end their week at their council resident camp with their unit. However, rather than participating in that camp’s program during the week they are transported in a council contingent for Scout Camp program at The Summit. Interested groups should encourage their council Program Director, Camp Director, or Scout Executive to contact The Summit about taking advantage of this opportunity. More info can be found here!

Note: This program does not include open access to high adventure venues (ie- The “Big” Zip, Barrels, Rocks, etc).

National Scout Jamboree

2017 Jamboree Dates

The 2017 National Scout Jamboree will be held from July 19 to July 28, 2017.

The Jamboree’s Permanent Home

In 2009, the BSA purchased 10,600 acres of property adjacent to West Virginia’s New River Gorge National River area in order to create the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. The Summit is the new home of achievement, adventure, and innovation in Scouting. With world-class facilities and a focus on outdoor action sports, the Summit welcomed Scouts to a whole new jamboree experience in summer 2013. 2017 is the next national jamboree and The Summit will also be hosting the 2019 World Jamboree.

Visiting the Mountains

There are incredible side trips that Scouts and families can take on their way to and from the 2017 National Scout Jamboree. A tour of Washington, D.C., is only a few hours’ drive away, and the entire region surrounding the Summit is filled with some of the most beautiful mountains in the country. The Blue Ridge is just to the south, and the Shenandoah Valley is a short drive to the east. That’s not to mention all of the incredibly scenic areas in West Virginia itself.
