Col Vetoraz is a small producer in Valdobbiadene, but his Prosecco has individuality and great character. The wine has an appealing mild fruitiness, grapey aromas, with delicate mousse Chardonnay 80%Pinot 2 FRANCIACORTA DOCG Alma GranCuvee12.5% vol Lombardia NV 66.50 Nero 19%Pinot Bellavista Bianco 1% Alma Gran Cuvée Bellavista is the ultimate expression of the search for the pure essence of harmony since 1977. Its name, Alma, from the Latin ‘almus’ meaning to nurture, feed, pays homage to the Land of Franciacorta which produces wonders to behold. Dynamically fizzy and full of vigour, the wine is straw yellow with a greenish tinge and a fine persistent mousse; it has a full flavour with hints of sweet ripe fruit, meringue, pastries and candied citrus peel Chardonnay 100% 3 FERRARI Perle’ 12.5% vol Trento 2013 68.50 Trento DOC The house was established in 1902 by Giulio Ferrari who first planted Chardonnay in Trentino with the purpose of producing sparkling wines equal to Champagne. His obsessive and uncompromising dedication to quality resulted in the wines winning many international awards. Ferrari became the most prestigious Italian sparkling wine. The Perle’ is made using selected Chardonnay grapes from the estate’s own vineyards. The wine spends 5 years on its lees and as a result has great elegance, fine creamy mousse with lingering notes of apple and almond; a lovely dry finish Chardonnay 75%Pinot 4 CA’ DEL BOSCO BRUT Cuvee Prestige12.5% vol Lombardia NV 70.50 Nero15% Franciacorta DOCG Pinot Bianco 10% Situated in Erbusco, Lombardy, this house is regarded as one of the finest Italian wine estates. Founded in 1968, the then young Maurizio Zanella started the journey to fulfil his dream of producing world-class sparkling wines. Not only has he achieved this, but in 2002, the prestigious guide, Gambero Rosso nominated this estate «cellar of the year» for the consistently high quality of all its wines Chardonnay 100% 22 BRIDE VALLEY 12.0% vol England 2016 85.50 Blancs de Blancs, English Sparkling Wine Steven Spurrier (arguably the most influential British wine writer) and his wife Arabella, noticing the similarities of the chalky soil on Arabella’s farm in West Dorset with that in Champagne, took up the challenge of producing Sparkling wine. They sourced the finest clones of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier and have planted 10 hectare on the most exposed south-facing site. The 2011 vintage was the first harvested and it was an instant success. The 2016 Blanc de Blanc has notes of white flower and spring-like freshness on the nose with citrus elements and a hint of dry honey. Great purity of fruit on the palate showing a light creaminess at first contrasting to a taut Granny Smith acidity on the finish. A true reflection of Bride Valley’s chalky Kimmeridgian soil. 2 ` Chardonnay 100% 5 FRANCIACORTA DOCG Gran Cuvee Saten12.5% vol Lombardia2014 95.50 Bellavista Bellavista has become a benchmark for Italian sparkling wines and it stands up to the finest champagne. The Gran Cuvee Saten only released in great vintagesis aged in barrique for seven months. For this cuvee, the fruit is taken from the older south-facing vineyards on the hillside of the commune of Erbusco. It has a complex bouquet with intense aromas of flowers with peach, citrus, honey and hazelnut notes; freshness and balance bring the fruit to the fore. It also has good ageing potential Chardonnay 100% 6 FERRARI Giulio Ferrari Riserva12.5% vol Trento 2007 151.00 Trento DOC The equivalent to a vintage Champagne, it is only made in great years from Chardonnay grapes in the MasoPianizza vineyard. The wine spends 10 years on its lees and is bottled with only 2.5g of residual sugar. One of the great expressions of Italian sparkling wine, it has a remarkable elegance, complexity and freshness. With a fine persistent

By Latin III, the students should be reading unaltered texts in Latin. It is important that the students read texts written by Romans, instead of teachers. Students can learn information about culture and language from reading the words of the Romans. This project is designed to help young students navigate their way through an authentic text. This unit has been designed to take about 12 days. The lesson plans are laid out for group work. This Petronius project lends itself to be incorporated into a larger Roman author unit. I incorporate Petronius as one of the six Romans authors whom I expose my students during a semester. This unit could be longer. Students could translate and discuss only one page a day with daily review of the previous page. Using the suggested extension activities would also extend the unit. It is important to read and discuss the introduction with the students in order to familiarize them with the time period, author, and genre of the Satyricon.

Letteratura e cultura visuale, di Michele Cometa 221 Steven Shapin THE TASTES OF WINE: TOWARDS A CULTURAL HISTORY Abstract How have people talked about the organoleptic characteristics of wines? How and why have descriptive and evaluative vocabularies changed over time? The essay shows that these vocabularies have shifted from the spare to the elaborate, from medical im- plications to aesthetic analyses, from a leading concern with “goodness” (authenticity, soundness) to interest in the analytic description of component flavors and odors. The causes of these changes are various: one involves the importance, and eventual disap- pearance, of a traditional physiological framework for appreciating the powers and qualities of different sorts of aliment, including wines; another concerns the develop- ment of chemical sciences concerned with flavor components; and still another flows from changing social and economic circumstances in which wine was consumed and the functions served by languages of connoisseurship.
